Director’s NotesAlmost, Maine is a play that has been widely produced at high schools, colleges and professional theaters around the country. Aside from thepractical aspects of the play that make it easily producible, and thegreat roles for actors, the play is essentially about relationships andthe discovery of love. As a department, we felt that after a period ofprofound political turmoil and an ongoing pandemic, it would begreat to add a light -hearted play with a hopeful message to ourseason. Rehearsing the play was admittedly very well, let’s say itwas different over zoom. I acknowledge every actor and our stagemanager, Savannah Casey, who patiently worked with me todetermine how to best tell these stories through a medium that wecame to see as a combination of theatre and film. This is my firstproduction here at the University of Redlands and special thanksto the department faculty and staff who have continued their stellarwork and collaboration throughout this challenging pandemic time. It’s been a joy to work with everyone and to support the students intheir development. A special shout out to student designers, KolbyRattigan and Kayleigh Stelling, who adapted to every iteration of theshow as we moved from an outdoor in-person concept to the filmedversion you are witnessing. Even through the challenging process ofmaking theatre during a pandemic, the continues and realizes itspurpose – to bring us together to reflect upon what it means to behuman. In the case of Almost, Maine, the message is pretty simple.Love is love is love.-Gregory Ramos2

The Department of TheatreArts Presents2021-2022 Season ProductionsNATIVE GARDENS by Karen ZacariasSTUDENT DIRECTOR: THA BUS major Gabriel RodriguezNative Gardens is a true breath of comic fresh air. It’s abiting, perceptive, and ultimately hopeful sendup to ourfraught relationships with those around us – even right nextdoor. Beyond snappy one-liners and garden hose fights, theplay challenges audiences to look beyond petty differencesand rediscover our shared decency.THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE by Matthew LopezDIRECTED BY Theatre Arts Chair Gregory RamosHe’s young, he’s broke, his landlord’s knocking at the door, and he’sjust found out his wife is going to have a baby. To make matterseven more desperate, Casey is fired from his gig as an Elvisimpersonator in a run-down, small-town Florida bar. When the barowner brings in a B-level drag show to replace his act, Casey findsthat he has a whole lot to learn about show business—and himself.THE THANKSGIVING PLAY by Larissa FastHorseSTUDENT DIRECTORS: Senior THA BUS majors James Johnston andTom JohnstonAh, Thanksgiving, that most American of holidays: when familiesgather to celebrate the warmth of home, the bounty of the harvest— and a legacy of genocide and violent colonial expansion. Goodintentions collide with absurd assumptions in Larissa FastHorse’swickedly funny satire, as a troupe of terminally “woke” teachingartists scrambles to create a pageant that somehow manages tocelebrate both Turkey Day and Native American Heritage Month.THE SPRING PLAY FESTIVALComprised of works created by graduating seniors.15
