4. Lightning RoundsUsing GIS Apps at Atlanta’s Place-Based Semester SchoolLance Owen, PhDSocial Science Faculty & GIS CoordinatorLab Atlanta (co-partnership of The Lovett School and Atlanta Public Schools) Using WebApp Builder to Construct Interactive Maps for Global Urban Historyatlantaregional.orgInternational Tower229 Peachtree St, NE Suite 100Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Purpose - Engaging 15 & 16 year olds in an Urban Sociology course with fieldwork that led them to:o Engage with the publico Think deeply about urban space and its social dynamicso Encounter Atlanta in a way that builds geographic and spatial awarenessUsing GIS as a Pedagogical Tool in Place-Based Education.o Process of building surveys and tools is as important as the data/results.o Approach combines both computer and GPS technologies with more traditional methods, such askeeping a movement journal and plotting maps by hand.o Data is intended to shed light on the lives of city dwellers and the spaces they use.Q: Is Lab ATL a non-profit?A: Yes.Q: How can ‘we’ as GIS professionals get involved in helping educate younger folks?A: Come talk to them, tell them what you do, and show them what you do.-Reach out to local schools through your professional organizations.-Volunteer your time at the Greening Youth Foundation. https://gyfoundation.orgQ: Where is it located?A: MidtownQ: Does Lab ATL host classes year round?A: Yes.Georgia Geospatial Information Office UpdateSusan Miller, Georgia Geospatial Information Office Updates affecting the ARC:o Acquired a grant to fly the entire state of Georgiao 1-3yr turn-around timeo Building a program for LiDAR to share and continued fundingo 10 million dollars to fly the state Only 2 million of that is provided by the County/StateThe 911 call center system was built in the 1950’s and need to be completely overhauled.o Use of cell phones instead of LAN lines creates a locational problem. The new Next Gen systems are mission critical.Q: What is status/trajectory of laws & court decisions regarding geospatial data, open records, etc.?atlantaregional.orgInternational Tower229 Peachtree St, NE Suite 100Atlanta, Georgia 30303

A: 1200 users statewide. More people telling positive stories means funding will be easier to get.Q: What is status of Geospatial Data Act & how does it affect us?A: It passed. A national act that quantifies the FGDC also requires federal agencies to be more transparent about whatthey’re doing (ensures no duplication between agencies). Aimed to help break down the federal agency silos.Q: Is there any LiDAR available for Georgia now? Any through USGS 3DEP?A: Yep. Some LiDAR data on USGS 3DEP site. The metadata contains when/where LiDAR was previously flown and if it isshareable.Q: Will imagery be orthorectified?A: Yes.Q: Would Nov 2018 imagery still be 3 band?A: Yes, but 4th band could be bought if needed. About 4 per square kilometer.Q: Do you have analytics on how much usage the imagery service is seeing?A: Yes, about 1200 users statewide. Over 1 million hits per month. A lot of state agencies using it, including DOT.Q: What about buy-ups for the FY2019 USGS 3DEP LiDAR project?A: Yes, there will be a buy-up option. Info was submitted, still waiting for the cost of that option.Q: Will the statewide address database require state legislation?A: Don’t know for sure. Can’t imagine that it won’t need legislation. We won’t know for at least a couple years after thepilot is completed.Q: What states have you looked at for statewide address/road datasets. I believe Ohio has it. LBRS / OGRIPA: Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Tennessee. A lot out there to learn from. We were the 45th state to have it.Good news is- we can do it right the first time. Mistakes learned from previous states. No payment models.Q: Has there been talks of Georgia ever hosting a statewide GIS Users Conference/Users Group?A: Yes. URISA has one every other year. We’d love to do that but, we need capacity. Love the idea!Q: I’ve used NAIP imagery in the past and have a complete set of 2010, but other years are not easily available in aseamless product. Could you get them so that we’d have many years in one place?A: Warning: NAIP imagery might stop happening. USDA might start buying commercially flown imagery instead ofcustom flights (which are a huge expense).atlantaregional.orgInternational Tower229 Peachtree St, NE Suite 100Atlanta, Georgia 30303
