General InformationThe TOEFL test measures the ability of non-native Englishspeakers to communicate in English in an academicsetting. It accurately measures how well you can read, listen, speak and write in English in a college or universityclassroom.TOEFL scores are accepted worldwide by more than11,500 universities and other institutions in over 160countries. More institutions accept TOEFL scores thanscores from any other English-language test, and over 35million people have taken the test since it began in 1964.The test is available to everyone who is properlyregistered, regardless of race, color, creed or nationalorigin (subject to U.S. sanctions and embargoes).Feeling safe and comfortable during testing is importantand contributes to your success. That’s why the TOEFL iBT test is conveniently offered via 3 testing options — at a testcenter, at home, and on paper — so you can choose thetesting option that best suits your needs and preferences. The TOEFL iBT TestYou will have 3 hours to complete the TOEFL iBT test. Thetest has 4 sections: Reading measures your ability to understandacademic reading material written in English —54–72 minutes; 30–40 questionsListening measures your ability to understand spokenEnglish as it is used in colleges and universities —41–57 minutes; 28–39 questionsSpeaking measures your ability to speak English in anacademic context — 17 minutes; 4 tasksWriting measures your ability to write in English ina way that is appropriate for college and universitycourse work — 50 minutes; 2 tasksThe test emphasizes integrated skills and helps youconfirm that you are ready to communicate your ideasabout what you will read and listen to in English inyour academic courses. Integrated tasks require you tocombine more than one skill. You’ll be asked to: Read, listen, then speak in response to a questionListen and then speak in response to a questionRead, listen, then write in response to a questionThe test you take may include extra questions in theReading or Listening section that do not count towardyour score. These questions are used to make scorescomparable across test administrations, or they may be2021-22 TOEFL iBT Test Information Bulletinnew questions being used to determine how they willfunction in an actual testing environment. Each section of the test has a time limit. If you finish asection early, you can go on to the next section, but youcan’t go back to a section you have already completed orfor which time has been called. However, you can go backto previous passages — within the Reading section only —during the time for that section. There is a mandatory 10-minute break between theListening section and the Speaking section. You should work quickly but carefully on the Reading andListening section questions. Some questions are moredifficult than others, but try to answer every one to thebest of your ability. If you’re not sure of the answer to aquestion, make the best guess you can.The questions in the Speaking and Writing sections areeach separately timed. Try to answer every one of thesequestions as completely as possible in the time allowed.Respond only on the assigned topic. If you respond on adifferent topic, your response will not be scored. The test is taken on a computer at authorized test centers,at home monitored by a human proctor, or on paper at atest center. The TOEFL iBT Home EditionThe TOEFL iBT Home Edition is the same TOEFL iBT testyou would take at a test center, just taken from theprivacy of your own home or in a secure location andmonitored online by a human proctor offered everywherethat the TOEFL iBT test is normally available, except Iran.If you take the test at home you are required to haveyour computer scanned for a system check and for anysoftware that may be used for an unfair advantage. The at-home test is identical in content, format andon-screen experience to the test taken at a test centerand is offered around the clock, four days a week. The TOEFL iBT Paper EditionYou can take the TOEFL iBT test on paper in selectcountries, if you prefer that testing format. The Paper Edition is the same 4-Skills TOEFL iBT test.
