Segment: A Corner in the Occult: (approx. 1300-1500 words): John Whiteside Parsons AKA Jack Parsons (Background Music: “Piano Quartet in g 3rd Movement by Mozart” performed by Linda Holzer) Hello and welcome to “A Corner in the Occult” Where we focus on one part or person from the history ofoccultism. In these regular segments, I touch upon many aspects of the occult and I hope to offer yousomething new or at least something to think about. The information presented is always done so in the bestmanner possible in regards to its content and accuracy depending on the available sources. There is a lot inoccultism that one may never choose to look into, and here you have the opportunity to learn about somethingwhich you may have never bothered to investigate and oddly enough there are at least some people who maynot be that aware of whom today’s topic is on John Whiteside Parsons better known as Jack Parsons a founding member of Jet Propulsion Laboratories (JPL)during the late 1930's was not only a pivotal American Rocket Propulsion Researcher, but he was also anOccultist, Magickian, Thelemite, and member of Aleister Crowley’s Ordo Templi Orientis. Born on October 2 of 1914, Parsons grew up in a wealthy family living in Los Angeles, California. His stated isolation as a child and unfortunate experiences with other children caused him to focus more on hiseducation. He went to a private high school and when Jack was a teenager his Father walked out on him and isMother. His father was said to have been involved in an affair with another woman and to help Jack, hisgrandfather filled in as some semblance of a father figure for him as he finished his adolescent years. It wasduring this time that he developed an interest in chemistry and science which would lead him to experimentingwith black powder rockets with friend and mechanic Edward Forman. In his senior year of high school he got ajob at Hercules Powder Company and would marry his first wife Helen Northrup in 1935. His life would take an interesting turn in 1937 when, though not formally graduate students themselves Parsonsand Forman, due to their experience and knowledge, would later become involved with (GALCIT) theGuggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology. At Caltech they assisted gradstudents Frank Malina, Weld Arnold, Apollo M. O. Smith, and Tsien Hsue-shen with testing a small, alcoholfueled motor to gather data for Malina's graduate thesis. Malina's thesis advisor, aerodynamicist Theodore vonKármán, managed to acquire funding from the US Army to help with their research. This venture resulted in thedevelopment of solid rocket fuels and the invention of JATO units for aircrafts which were presented to theArmy in 1941. JATO, standing for “jet-fuel assisted take-off,” was a ground breaking technology which wouldhelp to usher in the space-age. “The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 4Episode #024 – Between Oraia and Heleneestablished the Aerojet Corporation to manufacture the JATO motors. The corporation would later becomeknown of as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in November of 1943. Not only was Parsons involved with science, but he was also heavily involved in the Occult and the teachings ofAleister Crowley. Apparently during test launches Parsons could be heard invoking Crowley’s Hymn to Pan. As so put by author Lon Milo DuQuette in Reel Time Films documentary on Jack Parsons titled, Jack Parsons: JetPropelled Anti-Christ . (DuQuette clip from Reel Time Films Documentary:) And indeed he was It was back in 1939 at the ripe age of 25 when Parsons first came across the works ofAleister Crowley which lead to him joining Agape Lodge in 1941 of Crowley’s Ordo Templi Orientis. Parsons tookFrater 210 as his magickal motto and was allegedly initiated by Crowley himself. In 1942 Parsons’ father passedaway which resulted in him inheriting a mansion that would become a bohemian haven for Parsons and those ofAgape Lodge because in 1943 he would be appointed as Master of Lodge by Crowley replacing Wilfred TalbotSmith whom Crowley was receiving complaints over. Apparently as a result of his conduct Smith was not onlyfelt to have tainted the reputation of the O.T.O., but his actions also prompted an FBI investigation ofcommunist activity in conjunction with Agape Lodge of which no charges were made. This incident of courseshook-up Crowley and so he removed Smith as Master and replaced him with Parsons. It was felt that Parsonscould renew the Lodge with his youthful enthusiasm and eventually utilized his mansion in conjunction Lodgeactivities. Stories about the goings-on in the mansion often involve ceremonies and orgiastic rituals. The localPolice were often knocking his door in response to complaints by neighbors one such complaint pertained to apregnant woman leaping over a bonfire in the backyard to which Parsons calmly dismissed by implying that hisneighbors were nosey and crazy. Along with being a scientist and occultist, like Crowley, Parsons was also a poet. An excerpt from his poemOriflamme, which appeared in the Journal of the O.T.O., on February 21 in 1943 seems to echo his exoticbohemian lifestyle at the time "I hight Don Quixote, I live on peyote,marijuana, morphine and cocaine,I never know sadness, but only a madnessthat burns at the heart and the brain.I see each charwoman, ecstatic, inhuman,angelic, demonic, divine.Each wagon a dragon, each beer mug a flagonwww.infinite-beyond.com

During that same year he divorced his first wife Helen and began seeing her sister Betty who joined him in hismagickal pursuits that is until 1945 when Betty began taking an interest in Science Fiction author and Church ofScientology founder L. Ron Hubbard who moved into Parsons’ mansion in August of 1945, eight years prior tofounding the Church of Scientology in December 1953 in Camden, New Jersey which is only minutes from wherethis episode is being recorded. Parson’s liked and respected Hubbard and didn’t seem too bothered by Betty’s change in affection for him asshe quickly took a liking to Hubbard. Parsons’ wrote to Crowley that Hubbard was probably the most Thelemicperson he had ever met and felt that he was in direct touch with some higher intelligence which he thought mayhave been Hubbard’s Holy Guardian Angel. Parsons in an appreciation for Hubbard allegedly revealed theknowledge of certain oath bound O.T.O. rituals to Hubbard and he would even go onto become one of Parsons’magickal partners and would act as a Seer during Parsons’ well known 1946 Babalon Working, an eleven day sexmagic rite that was meant to summon an “elemental being” or incarnation of a Goddess or Force called Babalon,as so mentioned in the Book of the Law, into Parson’s life. Shortly if not almost immediately Parsons met thered haired and green eyed artist, occultist, and actress Marjorie Cameron in his own home, and as a result oftheir meeting Parsons concluded that the Babalon Working was a success. This permitted them to continue withthe next phase of the ritual, which was the creation of a Moonchild who would be, for lack of a better term, aMessiah figure for the religion of Thelema. Though no a physical child came into being from the working it wasbelieved by Parsons and Marjorie that an astral or spiritual child was created and that the final phase of theBabalon Working was a success. Around the start of the Babalon Working Parsons and Hubbard started a business venture where Parson’scontributed 95% of the initial start-up costs which was most of his savings. When the working had reached itsconclusion Hubbard and Betty left California for Florida after the business fell apart which nearly Parson’sdestitute, but managed through legal channels to dissolve the business and recovery most of his investment. Assome reports tell Crowley predicted this outcome as he was said to have no love for Hubbard and felt that hewas a con-artist from the start. In reference to the final phases of the Babalon Working Crowley, who had been keeping a proverbial eye on thegoings-on at Agape Lodge, stated in a letter to Karl Germer (the head of O.T.O. in the US at the time) that"Apparently Parsons.or somebody is producing a Moonchild. I get fairly frantic when I contemplate the idiocy ofthese louts." Crowley’s frustration for Parsons’ magickal endeavors eventually caused him to remove Parson’sfrom his position of power within the O.T.O. though some sources state that it was Parsons’ who resigned. Thisremoval by Crowley was probably also due to Parsons receiving “Liber 49” on February 28th during the BabalonWorking. Parson’s proclaimed that Liber 49 was the fourth chapter to The Book of the Law which was receivedwww.infinite-beyond.com
“The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 6Episode #024 – Between Oraia and Heleneby Crowley in 1904, which began to weave Parsons himself into the Thelemic Crowleyan Mythology. Apparentlythe prophecies from the workings and the gall of Parsons did not sit well with Crowley who may have viewedhim as a threat to his own role as Prophet of the New Aeon and head of the O.T.O. Eventually after leaving the O.T.O. Parsons and Marjorie became married. Parsons sold the home and he andMarjorie moved to live in the carriage house on the same property and found employment with North AmericanAviation Company and then with Hughes Aircraft. It was during this period of his life when some say he was teetering on madness with his taking of the name andtitle of ANTICHRIST in 1949, though the lucidity found in his writings from this time argues against this theory.For example his essay Freedom is a Two Edged Sword (originally written in 1946, but revisited in 1950) is just asinsightful now in today’s world as it was then. In it he redefines Freedom in the terms understood by Voltaire,Paine, Washington, Jefferson and Emerson (by explaining that) Freedom is a two-edged sword of which one edgeis liberty and the other, responsibility. Both edges are exceedingly sharp and the weapon is not suited to casual,cowardly or treacherous hands. In the same essay he discusses science and in a very interesting, direct, andclear way, explaining its process and fallacies and how today's science must forever be free to overthrow itsyesterdays, otherwise it will degenerate into ancestor worship. Yet despite his heavy involvement in bothscience and the occult Parsons never felt that there was a conflict between the two. In 1951 while allegedly working with Israel (a country him and Marjorie were planning to live) to build a plant todevelop explosives and armaments he was brought under investigation by the FBI for possible espionageallegations. Parsons had used his secret clearance at Hughes Aircraft to obtain confidential documents, whichresulted in him being fired from Hughes Aircrafts. For the next year Parsons found work as an explosives consultant for the film industry and even worked at alocal gas station to help make ends meet. However, on June 17th of 1952 while working with chemicals andsubstances not unfamiliar to him in his garage, Jack Parsons died in an explosion at the age of 38. His wifeMarjorie, unscathed by the blast, lived until 1995 however; his mother was so distraught over the death of herson that shortly after his death she committed suicide as a result of her grief through the over use of sleepingpills. Though some may choose to forget him, with his genius and ingenuity Jack Parsons made a landmarkcontribution to the world with his scientific research in jet propulsion which as a result initiated the space-ageand provided the opportunity for the Apollo 11 moon landing to take place. As an acknowledgement of hiscontribution to science twenty years after his death the International Astronomical Union named a crater on thedark side of the moon after him and in February of 2010 a play by the name of Pasadena Babalon: The World ofJack Parsons by George Morgan, Directed by Brian Brophy, ran for one week at the California Institute ofwww.infinite-beyond.com

From the basic to the complex all will be revealed. Welcome to theEssence of Magick Series echoing forth from The Infinite and The Beyond. The Powers of the Sphinx To Know. To Dare. To Will. To Keep Silent. Also known as the Four Powers of the Magus and The Witches’ Pyramid, though what is not entirely known iswhere they originated from, however the often overlooked fifth power “To Go” was instituted by AleisterCrowley and becomes the culmination of the presence of the four, that through their union they establish apower base which fuels the fifth. This idea is emulated by the witches pyramid with TO GO being the capstoneuniting the four base corners of TO KNOW, TO DARE, TO WILL, TO KEEP SILENT. Often times this sequence is viewed as a lesson for the new practitioner or rules which they should keep in mindin regards to their mystical and magickal pursuits, but in many ways this axiom is emblematic of so much more. Many of the elements found in magick have similar practical applications which relate conveniently to one’severyday common existence. In one aspect the axiom is a formula to obtain power and influence. Knowledge or awareness leads to daringand the inclination to Will which only results in power and opportunity if the acquired benefits are kept to one’sself. The common understanding explains that To Know is one’s complete awareness and over all knowledge of life aswell as their role in life. To Dare alludes to one’s ability to act and respond. To Will relates to one’s fortitude topersevere through their actions similar in idea to the combination of “doing and being.” And To Keep Silentreminds us that knowledge is power so long as it is kept secret. If we look at the elemental ordering of the axiom being Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Spirit being the fifth axiom ToGO. We become aware of the system of elemental evocation found in such Qabalistic systems like the GoldenDawn where opposites are brought forth in relation to one another which can be observed in the LesserBanishing Ritual of the Pentagram where Air is called first followed by Water, proceeded by Fire and thenanswered by Earth. The presence of the four results in allowance of the fifth element, Spirit, to come forth. Thisthen presents a very different system of manifestation which can be deduced by the Sunwise layout of theelements in relation to the magick circle and the four cardinal directions. Instead of there being a build-up ofmanifestation from Air to Fire to Water to Earth, we have a balancing act of bringing forth opposites in relationto oneanother.www.infinite-beyond.com
“The Infinite and the Beyond” hosted by Chris Orapello 9Episode #024 – Between Oraia and Helene If we rearrange the axiom to reflect a Wiccan circle casting, we have TO KNOW, TO WILL, TO DARE, TO KEEPSILENT, which relates to the order of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth and only switches the placement of TO DAREand TO WILL, but we have to wonder if we Will before we Dare or not? I am more inclined to think that we Dareto Will before anything else. Similarly through the combination of axioms we can observe Knowledge in Silence,Daring to Know, Daring to Will, Silence in Action, and Acting in Knowledge.PowerTo KnowTo DareTo WillTo Keep SilentTo rpioLeoTaurusLatin ionBull Most sources list Eliphas Levi as the earliest mention of the four powers. In his book The Key of The Mysteries hewrites that Boldness united to intelligence is the mother of all successes in this world. To undertake, one mustknow; to accomplish, one must will; to will really, one must dare; and in order to gather in peace the fruits ofone's audacity, one must keep silent. The Sphinx analogy alludes to the axioms as being parts of a single whole, being an amalgamation of aspectssimilar to that of the sphinx which is a mythical creature composed of other animals. For example Levi statesthat to know, is the human head; to dare, the claws of the lion; to will, the mighty flanks of the bull; to keepsilent, the mystical wings of the eagle. The specific animals mentioned being the Human, Lion, Bull, and Eaglerelate directly to the four Qabalistic words which correspond to the four letters of the Tetragram (Yod He VauHe). Levi reminds us that one only maintains their position (power) above others if they do not prostitute thesecrets of their intelligence in their commentary and laughter. Further emphasizing the power instilled and bythe practice of silence. This axiom is also inherent in the idea of initiation and the journey of practitioner. The act of applying to such anorganization or group implies a certain level of knowledge or awareness on the part of the individual and tocontinue forth through the initiation and following degrees requires a bit of daring to participate and Will topersevere of which any further knowledge received it accompanied with a vow of silence. In essence, the Powers of the Sphinx illustrates and enables one to partake in the process of becoming becausemanifestation is a continuous cycle of layers of insight and knowledge. The Powers of the Magus are parts ofwhole and so are needed in their completeness in order for the individual TO GO and to develop into their fullpotential.
