Ryerson UniversityYeates School of Graduate StudiesMA Immigration and Settlement StudiesCOURSE SELECTION AND REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS: 2015-16[A]OVERVIEWStudents in the MA in Immigration and Settlement Studies are required to complete 8 program courses plus aMajor Research Paper (MRP). The program requirements are designed to be completed by Full-time studentswithin three consecutive terms and by Part-time students within six consecutive terms. Most students docomplete the degree requirements within these timelines.Continuous registration in each term is required for all graduate students unless a student has been approvedLeave of Absence1 due to illness, maternity/paternity or compassionate reasons. Graduate students payprogram fees based on the status as a full-time or part-time student and not based on the number of courses astudent enrolled in.A Part-time student pays about 50% of the full-time program fees in a term. Two master’s part-time terms areequivalent to one master’s full-time term. A part-time student must enroll in the program for a minimum of sixterms to equate the minimum program fees paid by a full-time student. If a part-time student completes thedegree requirements in less than six terms, the minimum degree fees will be assessed and the student will beasked to pay the balance before graduation2.For the maximum time within which the master’s degree must be completed, refer to the Graduate StudiesAdmissions and Studies Policy (#142) section 3.8.[B]DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND COMPLETION PATTERNSTo meet the MA degree requirements of this program, both full-time and part-time students, mustsuccessfully complete 5 required courses, 3 elective courses and the Major Research Paper (MRP). Studentsare strongly advised to review the program curriculum for the degree requirements published in the onlineGraduate Studies Calendar (www.ryerson.ca/graduate/graduate calendar). The most up-to-date onlinecalendar should be used. The online calendar also contains calendar course descriptions.Full-time students will complete 4 required and 3 elective courses over the 1st and 2nd Terms (Fall andWinter terms), leaving both the IS8100 Field Placement and the Master’s Major Research Paper (MRP) to becompleted in the third term (Spring/Summer term).[a] Required courses[b] Electives sample 1[c] Electives sample 2Fall (Sept – Dec)IS 8901, IS 89032 electives1 electiveWinter (Jan – Apr)IS 8100A, IS8902, IS89041 elective2 electivesS/S (May to Aug)IS 8100B, MRP-Full-time students are free to decide in which of the Fall or Winter terms they wish to take 1 or 2electives in a term. MA Immigration and Settlement StudiesCourse Selection Instructions: 2014-15 academic year (Updated: July 13, 2015)2/8courses when they are offered. Your choice is how to spread your 3 elective courses over the Fall and Winterterms. The program’s advice is – DO NOT take all 3 electives in the same term (in addition to your requiredcourses). Decide whether you want a heavier course load in the Fall or Winter term. For a heavier load in theFall term, use the [a b] pattern above (required courses 2 electives in Fall). For a heavier load in the Winterterm, use the [a c] pattern (required courses 2 electives in Winter). Clearly, the preference for particularelective courses will be a factor in a student’s selection.Part-time students may enroll in up to a maximum of 2 one-credit courses in a term. The onlyexception to this rule is described below (section [D]) about “IS 8100 A/B Seminar and Field Placement”.There is no fixed sequencing for part-time students to follow in course selection. The program’s adviceis to complete IS 8904 Research Methods in the first winter term. Part-time students should bear in mind thatelective choices may vary from year to year, as will the course timetables of all classes.2015-16 Course Selection Formis available online in the program’s online ‘Handbook’ tion (click Student’s Handbook)In the “Student’s Handbook” click: “Forms & Guidelines – ISS Program”click “Course Selection Form”[C]SCHEDULING AND COURSE CHOICESEach graduate class is typically scheduled to a 3-hour slot, and meets once a week for a total of 12weeks of classes per term. Significant academic dates in each term are published in the Graduate StudiesSignificant Dates web site. Use the “normal twelve-week term” version. You are able to look up significant academic dates for each term, such as, when classes start, whenclasses end, last date to add a course, last date to drop a course, when final grades are posted online forstudent’s access etc.In the Course Selection Form, DAY Schedule means that a course will be offered in any 3-hour blockbetween 8 am to 6 pm on any one day between Monday and Friday. EVENING Schedule means that a coursewill be offered at 6-9 pm on any one day between Monday and Thursday. Course schedules will vary from yearto year. The program reserves the right to change these scheduling parameters due to unforeseeablecircumstances.Required courses are offered once in each academic year. A different set of elective courses will beoffered in each academic year. Not all electives listed in the program’s curriculum are being offered in anacademic year. The schedule of a course varies every time when it is being offered.Class schedule information provided in the Course Selection Form is TENTATIVE information and issubject to change. Students will know the confirmed class schedules including the classroom assignmentsonline AFTER they have been formally enrolled to courses by the Program Administrator. The ‘weeklyschedules’ in a student’s Student Center in RAMSS show the courses a student is formally enrolled/registeredin and the schedules are the confirmed course schedules.

MA Immigration and Settlement StudiesCourse Selection Instructions: 2014-15 academic year (Updated: July 13, 2015)3/8Course Choices in 2015-16 (F2015, W2016 and SS2016)The course options listed in the course selection form normally do not change. The ISS program typically does not offer any program course in the S/S term (May to August) except for theIS8100B Seminar and Field Placement. Part-time students who wish to enroll in a class in May-August mayconsider courses offered by other social science or arts graduate programs at Ryerson 3; however, formalenrollment in a non-ISS graduate course is subject to (i) space availability in the course, and (ii) the ISSprogram director’s approval to use the non-program course towards the ISS MA degree.[D]COURSES – REQUIRED, ELECTIVES, MRP, GD1000In general, course enrollment is based on space availability and on a first come first served basis. Studentsare strongly advised to submit the course selections as soon as the tentative schedules are released.Graduate students cannot select or register for courses online (see sections E and F below).Required coursesThe program has to maintain a balanced student enrollment in each of required course sections. The demandfor the day section of a required course always out-numbers the demand for the evening section of the samecourse. Only very few students will get into the day sections of two required courses in the same term.Full-time students are strongly advised to voluntarily select an evening section of one of the required coursesin each term.OR indicate which evening section of a required course in a term is your 2nd choice. For example, in the Fall term, you may circle1st choice: IS8901 (Day section)1st choice: IS8903 (Day section), AND2nd choice: IS8901 (Evening section) or IS8903 (Evening section)You may be forced into an evening section of one of the required courses in a term which you do not like if youdo not provide a 2nd choice.IS 8904 Research Methods: Full-time students must take this course in the Winter term.Part-time students are strongly advised to complete this course in the 1st Winter term. This will give themample time after the first Winter term to prepare/refine the MRP proposal and to look for a suitable MRP facultysupervisor.IS 8100A/B Seminar and Field Placement 4 is a one-credit required course that needs two consecutive termsof course registration: IS 8100 A in the Winter term and IS 8100 B in the Spring/Summer term. Students who are not enrolled in IS 8100 A in the Winter term are not permitted to enroll in IS 8100 B inthe Spring/Summer term.3 Refer to the ‘Course Substitution Guidelines’ in the online ISS Handbook Forms & Guidelines– ISS Program4 A ‘IS 8100 Field Placement Guide’ is available online in the ISS program Handbook (Program Forms & Guidelines).

MA Immigration and Settlement StudiesCourse Selection Instructions: 2014-15 academic year (Updated: July 13, 2015)4/8 IS 8100A in the Winter term has periodic class meetings; generally once a month. A schedule ofmeetings will be provided by the Field Placement Coordinator in the Winter term. The workload in IS8100 A in the Winter term will be minimal. The periodic IS8100 meetings in the Winter term aim atpreparing students in selecting and applying for a suitable field placement. The actual field placementand a few periodic class meetings will take place in the Spring/Summer term (May-August). Part-time students may choose to complete the IS 8100A/B course in the first year or second year inthe program. Those part-time students register in IS 8100 A in a Winter term may enroll in twoadditional courses in the same term – this is the only time when a part-time student is permitted toenroll in three courses.Elective coursesThe program aims at maintaining an optimal class size of a maximum of 18 students in each of the electiveclasses.Spaces will be assigned on a first come first served basis. Students are strongly advised to provide at leastone elective as a 2nd choice in each term. For example in Fall 2013, a student plans to take IS 8927 as a 1stchoice elective, he/she may indicate IS 8930 or IS 8925 as a 2nd choice.DO NOT check off ALL electives as your 1st choice and/or 2nd choice. Full-time students normally do not takemore than 2 electives in a term. Each course requires approximately 70-80 pages of reading per week.Others Major Research Paper (MRP)Generally, successful completion of IS8904 Research Methods is required before the MRP Milestoneenrollment. A research proposal approved by MRP faculty supervisor is also required to request for the formalenrollment in the research milestone. Refer to the “MRP Guideline” available online for detailed information inthe ISS program Handbook Forms & Guidelines – ISS Program. GD 1000Graduate students, both full-time and part-time, are required to maintain continuous active registration in theprogram. GD 1000 is a ‘place-holder course’ and is not a real course; there is no credit or grade attached to it.Graduate students are automatically enrolled in GD1000 every term for administrative purposes while they areactively registered in the program.[E]COURSE SELECTION-Online course selection is NOT available to graduate students. You must complete the CourseSelection form and return it to your program administrator. Remember to sign your name in the formbefore submitting it.
