A MESSAGE FROMFR. MIKE“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that awoman took and mixed with three measuresof wheat flour until the whole batch wasleavened.” Mt. 13:33PrayerfulReflectionFOR STRATEGIC PLANNING“Man plans, and God laughs” so the old Yiddish saying goes.But, if nothing more than to keep God laughing, we have spent thelast year planning here at the Duke Catholic Center. And while weacknowledge that in many ways it is difficult to foretell what Godhas in store, we are certain of one thing in the next three years:God will be faithful – we can plan on it! And so we have.In looking toward God’s faithfulness in the future, we first beganby looking at the past and the present. In this Annual Report, aswell as in past issues of our e-newsletter, I hope you have seenthe multiple examples of God’s faithfulness. The powerful wayin which Duke Catholic students are exploring their faith in newand vibrant ways. The generous ways in which so many alumni,parents and friends are supporting this ministry. And the stepsin growth that have been a blessing and a challenge for our staff.All signs of God’s faithfulness, and certainly a testament to theeffectiveness of our last strategic plan. Many of the initiativesthat seemed much like a dream four years ago are nowconsistent components of Catholic life at Duke. How? Weplanned and God was faithful.But still, the whole batch isn’t leavened. We yearn for theopportunity to reach more and more of the Catholic studentswhom we never are able to engage. We estimate that number isabout 2/3 of our Catholic student body. While that is consistentwith most parishes in the United States, we remain unsettled bythat truth, and have outlined a plan that fosters the growth ofthe students whom we do see and will empower them to reachout to their peers. We are planning to have students becomethe very leaven that will build the kingdom not only on Duke’scampus, but wherever these gifted young men and women mayfind themselves in the future. It fires me up with the zeal of thedisciples in the Upper Room when I think about the possibilities.Thank You! Thank you for praying for our students and thisministry. Thank you for your financial support that has allowedus to leaven more and more of the batch. Thank you fordeepening your own spiritual well – pursuing an openness tothe call of discipleship wherever you may find yourself. As wecontinue to plan for the future of the Duke Catholic Center, maythe Lord of the harvest continue to allow us to be servants whowork toward a future that does not belong to us.2Duke Catholic Center Advisory Board meetingThis reflection was used by the Strategic PlanningCommittee before each of its meetings in designing theDCC’s Strategic Plan. This prayer was composed by BishopKen Untener of Saginaw, drafted for a homily by Card. JohnDearden in Nov. 1979 for a celebration of departed priests.As a reflection on the anniversary of the martyrdom ofBishop Romero, Bishop Untener included in a reflectionbook a passage titled “The mystery of the Romero Prayer.”The mystery is that the words of the prayer are attributedto Oscar Romero, but they were never spoken by him.Every now and then it helps us to take a step back and to seethings from a distance. The Kingdom is not only beyond ourefforts, it is also beyond our visions. In our lives, we manage to achieve only a small part of the marvelous plan that isGod’s work. Nothing that we do is complete, which is to saythat the Kingdom is greater than ourselves. No statement sayseverything that can be said. No prayer completely expresses thefaith. No Creed brings perfection. No pastoral visit solves everyproblem. No program fully accomplishes the mission of theChurch. No goal or purpose ever reaches completion. Thisis what it is about: We plant seeds that one day will grow.We water seeds already planted, knowing that others willwatch over them. We lay the foundations of something that willdevelop. We add the yeast which will multiply our possibilities.We cannot do everything, yet it is liberating to begin. This givesus the strength to do something and to do it well. It may remainincomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way. It is anopportunity for the grace of God to enter and to do the rest.It may be that we will never see its completion, but that is thedifference between the master and the laborer. We are laborers,not master builders, servants, not the Messiah. We areprophets of a future that does not belong to us.

Catholic students explore and deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith through faith formation opportunities by May 2020.BecomeWe actively live the faith by becoming lifelongdevoted disciples of Jesus Christ in the world.E. 20-25% of Catholic students embrace the desire and discipline of daily prayer through resources and opportunities provided byDuke Catholic Center by May 2020.F. 20-25% of Catholic seniors participate in a program that facilitates faith life post-Duke by May 2020.Duke Catholic Center StrategicPlan Builds Roadmap for FutureAfter a year of focus groups, student interviews, and brainstorming sessions with staff, the DukeCatholic Center Advisory Board has established a new strategic plan to guide the growth ofthe DCC over the next five years. Approved by the board in May, the DCC staff and board areexcited to move forward with unified goals and specific strategies for engaging the most students.Facilitator Tricia Cellucci makes apresentation on the Strategic Plan duringAdvisory Board meeting“While we know the fullness of the Kingdom is beyond our making, we nevertheless alwayswant to be moving forward and building this piece of the Kingdom at Duke in a purposeful way,”said Beth Oliver, P’15, P’17, P’20, P’21, the chair of the DCC Advisory Board. “This new planenables us to do exactly that by narrowing the focus and bringing clarity to top priorities.”Distilling all of the DCC’s hopes and goals for students was not any easy process, however. But, with the invaluable help ofTricia Cellucci from the Catholic Leadership Institute, three areas of focus stood out that will enable the DCC staff to cast the widestnet: Belong, Believe, and Become.Each area of focus witnesses to the different stages of spiritual development and the varied types of strategies needed to engage adiversity of students. We have seen time and again that students who are struggling to feel a sense of belonging require very differentoutreach than students who are in the beginning stages of a relationship with Christ or those who are actively becoming disciples.This new strategic plan aims to provide strategies to reach students wherever they are in their spiritual journeys.A huge thanks to Our Sunday Visitor who provided a substantial grant to cover the full costs of creating the Strategic Plan.3
