[t'sen CRUDE!"1987I conceded how a lot of the PD stuff WAS, in fact, crude(though not all), but that its beauty was inits Simplicity.A commercial ргодгалиет goes to great lengths to concealwhat he has done. His livelihood dependson:gettingremunerationtion for many hours of writing this code. The lastthing he is likely to do is "give away” all thathard work.Sohe compiles it and saves the "SOURCE CODE" inhis own files, selling only the "OBJECT CODE".А РО program, however, is usually "open-architecture". Thisis primarilybecausetheauthordidn'tSeeconcealing it, but it may also be due to theproud of his work and would be flattered ifanypointinfact that he'svuv copied it.This is not to say that all PD Programs аге"се". Some areconcealed, just like commercial ones and for5161.3” reasons. The author may be pleased to let the computingput.ic USE theprogram, but may be quite protective of theMETHOLS employed.some РО terminal programas and 885Such is the case withprograms in CP/M.“Learning to Progran -The way [ learned BASIC the MOST and theFASTEST was bysimply "typing in" programs from Magazines. Not the MachineCode kind which have numerous DATA statements, but the pureBASIC ones. I then tried various modifications to suit ayparticular applications. As I worked, I ranacross new KeywordsI'd never understood before and vas forcedto look thea up.This seems to пе a much sore interesting vayof learning thansimply the dry memorization of one Commandafter another. In addition, you get to view other levelsof organization, not merely the individual command, but awhole subroutine as itworks together and the interaction of thevarious subroutines. This is a key point. In the process oftyping in and/ormodifying à progran that you got out of theUser Group library, you get to see every size of unit. Yousee I) an individualcommand 2) a loop, 3) a subroutine, 4) the"business" part ofthe program (vs. the user-friendly frontend), 5) the Graphics(continued on page 2)

AUGUSTNITE-TIMESINNEVSDEFENSEOF PUBLICDOMAINSOFTWAREcontinued from page 1input. до I plan to type them all in? Not likely. That's wherebelonging to a User Group comes in handy. І cantype іп socode, 6) the Instructions or DOCs and 7) the Program as а wholepackage. But as long as there are computer users, there vill be thosewho REFUSE io learn how to program. So be it. They vill alwayspay TOP DOLLAR to get someone else to do those siaplecustomizations that the rest of us take for granted. But honestly feel that Tisexers, in general, tend to learnprogramming early. This is due, in part, to the general lack of"shrink-wrapped' software, and part dueprogramming that Sinclair computers enbody.totheEASEofAnother advantage of РО software is that it sometiaes doesthings that NO commercial package vill do. Such as theSchoenvetter Printer patch, The TINYBOARD BBS (for nearly ayear), for about 5 months, Mike DI RIENZO's RLE decoder vas theway to go, for about 5 months Rich Moldovan had the onlyTerminal progras for the QL which used XMODEM, and nostrecently, the only known RAMDISK for the 2068 was written byJia Schowalter (525 Reed Av./Akron,OH 44301).PO software evolved in the early days of Computers, whenпајпѓеаве programmers swapped their personal versions of StarTrek. But as the Micro Revolution began, there were thosepeople who believed that ALL software should be free. (Part ofan elaborate rationalization for "Why I pirate software’) Butthey took their philosophy a step furtherThey proceeded towrite some TRUELY EXCELLENT prorgams, azo then distributed thesfar and wide There are about 50,000 PO :::les in CP/M. I getà chuckle, on occasion, when I read in 29 old T/S Magazineabout a program that "Comes complete with a 9 page manual!" Ihave found many РО prorgams which come th a 100 page DOC fileto explain it. Free, all free! But don't zet ae wrong, ['a verygrateful for ALL the software deveiopers who support aywachines, and ['a NOT complaining about their charging for it.what I AM saying is that it'sКаруdifficult — to"Over-Document” а piece of software.Returning to the subject of "Туре-ип" programs. Where do Iget such programs? Vell, I sat down with ayimmediatecollection of publications and paged through them all to countthe Type-ins. was pleased to discover that I own over 500 foray 3 computers (75-1000, Т9-2068 4 QL). See the PO Chart forwore details.I only had significantsamplesof10publications. [f someone had all the newsletters to search, ['acertain they could round up quite a few wore. [ will guess thatthere are between 2-3,000 such type-ins in the obviouspublications. There would also be more in the less obviousones, like COMPUTER VIOEQ GAMES or YOUR COMPUTER (Bothpublished in the UK, both carry type-ins for Sinclairs on asporadic basis). [ had no samples of these. All these programs represent many nan-years of tine tobring thea in for the library and other Mesberscan type циothers and we can swap. Ideally, this is done ina bit noreorganized fashion so that no two people end uptypingSame program. Organization is never perfect, but ve cantry.inthealwaysNov, I live way out here in Arizona, and I haven'treallybelonged to any national User Groups until fairly recently. Butfrom here, I observe this: The national consciousnessof andcareful collection of T/S PD software has taken a dramaticleapin the last year. [ currently belong to the Long IslandSinclair/Timex group (L.I.S.T.), and I really like theirapproach. Most national groups are happy to sendyou аnewsletter (if you pay dues), but reserve their librarypriviledges for local members. LIST goes further, they havetapes of РО software which they send to their "Mail Order”members as well. You can't order an individual program, you getап entire tape or nothing at all. You can get a tape by firstbecoming а member ( 15/yr). [f you have a program to donate, itcosts you 3 plus a quality tape. If not, it costs you 6. Therecent LIST tape 6.0 had 63 files on it. Not shabby for 3!But who do they con into spending their nights and weekends toMAKE these tapes? Simple, they bought a mono cassette dupingrecorder from Sears for 66 using the treasury money. Now ourcarefree librarian simply pops in two tapes, sets the machinegoing and wanders off to eat dinner. Whaddya think folks?Nearly all the major User Groups have libraris:, none (thi know of) have this excellent "Mail-order" poi .y of LIST.Contact them at:P.0.Box 438/Centerport,NY 11721-8::3.By ay count, there are upwards of 100 User Groups here inNorth America. That represents a considerable рос: of “typers’.Suppose each one of up just typed in ONE program? That wouldmean at least 1000 programs we could all share! 7: -ourse therevill always be those content to sit back and "Let Gary do it."1 guess there's pretty much nothing to be done about that. Theyvill miss out on learning some BASIC. Oh vell! The last topic concerning Type-ins is the new CK-TYPEprogram that Stan Lemke recently wrote for TIME DESIGNSMAGAZINE (May/June 87). This aids the Type-in process in thefollowing way. The original author of the Type-in must run hisprogram through CK-TYPE and print that output along with theprogram listing itself. CK-TYPE will do a checksum of thecharacters in each BASIC line and list these. Then, when ourintrepid typer goes to input the program, he ALSO needs CK-TYPEand runs his final input through the CK-TYPE as vell. He willALSO get a listing of checksum values which he compares withthose of the original author. It's not perfect, but it's мауahead of nothing. For additional copies of this issue of ТОМ,send 3 (includes postage) to TIME DESIGNS/29722 Hult Rd/Colton, OR 97917. If all newsletters used this system, it would(continued on page 3)
