Dentalequipment and technologies continue tochange and thus improve the quality ofcare we provide our patients. The 2017Hinman Dental Meeting will celebratethese changes. Just as Steve Penley tookthe photo of Dr. Thomas P. Hinman fromthe early 20th century and created a morecurrent and contemporary portrait ofour founding father, the Hinman DentalSociety is becoming more contemporaryand current. As we transform, the HinmanDental Society must remain committedto our important legacy of providing thehighest quality continuing education anddental philanthropy. Great traditions andthe highest professional standards remainthe cornerstone of the Hinman DentalSociety. We have 105 years of great historyand our changing face will insure ourcontinued success in the 21st century. The 2017 programreflectsthechanging face ofHinman. The consensus from the groupis that the membership should be active andinvolved with the society. This support iscrucial for a healthy organization. One way toaccomplish activity on a more regular basis isthrough our quarterly membership meetings. It was suggested, voted on and approved, thatall active members (non-emeritus) are requiredto attend one membership meeting each cycle.WNE!TENEVAssociate members are required to attend amembership meeting and/or work the Hinmanmeeting in March. HINMAN’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SYLVIA RATCHFORD,CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH HINMAN“Devotion to detail is the secret of success”– Dr. Thomas P. Hinman““The Hinman Dental Society has been fortunate to have anExecutive Director who, for 20 years, has been a shining exampleof Dr. Hinman’s motto. She has impacted the society and meeting inso many ways that have contributed to its great success and growthsince she joined us in 1996. Her attention to detail and genuineconcern about the society and meeting show through in her day-today efforts and translate into continuing the ideals and principles Dr.Hinman established over 100 years ago. Sylvia is truly one of a kindand an invaluable resource to the society. Some of our Past GeneralChairmen that have worked closely with her reminisce about theirexperiences with Sylvia over the past 20 years.I have lectured and worked with most every dental meetingworldwide and have never found anyone as capable as Sylvia. Sheis a shining example of the consummate executive director. Nodoubt Sylvia has helped make the Hinman Meeting the numberone favorite among invited clinicians. It is a credit to her manyskills that she has worked so well with all the present and pastchairmen, plus she has assembled and trained an amazing andtalented staff of co-workers. Although Sylvia is really creative inher own right, she is also a great listener and fast to adapt tonew ideas and techniques. I feel we are so fortunate to have hadher leadership over the past 20 years and I hope for many, manymore she is truly our Hinman Jewel!– Ronald Goldstein”Sylvia is the most professional person with whom I’ve ever hadthe pleasure to work. Her dedication, talents, attitude, and abilityto get along with everyone are unsurpassed. She is simply oneof the finest people I know and I’m extremely proud to call hermy friend. Congratulations on twenty great years of the “BestHinmans Ever!– Robert Towe”We also asked Sylvia a few questions about her experiences workingwith the society What has been the most enjoyable part of working for Hinman overyour 20-year tenure?Without a doubt – the people! The members and staff havesupported, challenged, acknowledged, assisted, appreciated andworked with me to maintain and, hopefully, grow Hinman’sreputation as the best dental meeting in the country. It’s an honorto have made 20 new friends with each of the General Chairmen.Sylvia speaks to the attendees of the 2016 closing reception in the Omni atrium. What have been some of the biggest changes you have experienced inthe meeting or society while you have been here? The biggest changes have all been the result of technology. Mostare good (website, online registration) and some have created morechallenges (online CE offerings and distance learning that offeralternatives to in-person meetings). What have you learned through working at Hinman and with alarge group of dentists?Working here has increased my understanding and appreciation for thecritical role that associations and societies fill. There is no end in sightto the goals we set to improve the quality and increase the quantity ofcontinuing education that we provide. Learning does not take place inthe classroom alone. The on-site experiences, the social interaction, thepeer-to-peer networking and the mentoring opportunities are many. The society structure, with the volunteer members who strive for thebest, continues to provide these opportunities. What are some of your favorite memories or events at Hinman?I have great memories from all 20 years and each of the respectiveGeneral Chairmen! Some of the highlights include a meeting withrecord-breaking attendance or revenue, the 100th anniversaryyear-long celebration topped off with the Annual Meeting Cruiseand, surprisingly, the 2008 tornado. While it might sound strangeto include a natural disaster, that event was such an amazingdemonstration of the heart of Hinman. There were members, officers and chairmen who stayed up all night and worked withour staff for the next week to take care of speakers, attendees andexhibitors. It was Hinman at its finest.Thank you, Sylvia, for your passion, service and dedication to theHinman Dental Society!Anniversary Celebration! We are inviting the Hinman Members to celebrate Sylvia’s 20 years with us at the upcoming membership meeting onSeptember 19 at the Westin Buckhead Atlanta during the dinner portion of the evening. Come by and congratulateSylvia on her 20 years with Hinman. There will also be an opportunity to raise a toast to Sylvia. Hope you can attend!September PREVIEW REVIEWThe Official Publication of the Hinman Dental Society9
