Consultingarchitect Irving Morrow found thathe preferred the vivid hue of theprimer to more conventional paintchoices such as carbon black andsteel gray. The “international orange”color was not only visible in the fog,but it complemented the naturaltopography of the surrounding hillsand contrasted well with the coolblues of the bay and the sky. Morrowultimately selected the bold primercolor, intended to be temporary,to coat the bridge. (The customformula, manufactured by SherwinWilliams, is no secret.
