Biology is the study of all living organisms andthe physical factors that affect them. It is essential to understand howorganisms carry out their life processes, interact with one another, andinteract with their physical environment. By understanding theseconcepts you can look at the natural world around you, and know thewho, what, where, and most importantly why and how.The cornerstone of any science course is having a uniform approach tosolving problems. Using the scientific method we will improve ourproblem solving skills by doing inquiry based labs. In order to encouragethe greatest amount of student achievement we will have a variety ofactivities meant to address all learning styles and needs. To reinforce andsupplement learning that occurs in the classroom we will havehomework on a regular basis. We will have projects of varying lengths soyou may become more knowledgeable in a particular area. Finally, wewill look at the issues that are of particular importance and relevance tous and communicate our opinions in written and oral form.CP Biology is a college prep course and will entail outside research, inquiry labs, team work and the ability to problem solve. My goal as youexit this course is to give you biology content, lab skills and problemsolving practice to prepare for your next college prep or advancedplacement level science course.Grade Level Expectations/Content StandardsApproximateTargeted DateTime Spent orof AssessmentPercent of time*May changeSpentdue to statetesting1.1 Safety in the Science Classroom2 weeks8/191.2 Scientific Method and Experimental Design1.2 Characteristics of Life2.1 Properties of water2 weeks9/192.2 Chemistry of Life2.3 Introduction to Macromolecules3.1 Cell Structure and Function3 weeks10/73.2 Cell transport4.1 Cell Respiration5 weeks11/104.2 Photosynthesis5.1 Cell Cycle and Mitosis3 weeks12/95.2 Meiosis and Cancer5.3 Cell Differentiation and TissuesN/AN/A12/14-155.1 Homeostasis4 weeks2/35.2 Structure and function of body systems6.1 DNA Structure Function3 weeks2/286.2 DNA Replication, Transcription and Translation6.3 Biotechnology7.1 Variation of Traits2 weeks3/167.2 Patterns of Heredity

Formative grades in addition to summative unit assessments will be used toholistically determine your grade. Summative: Summative measures of achievement are taken when unit master is expected. (i.e., unit tests, culmination of a project, embedded assessments, etc.) Formative: Formative assessments measure the scaffolding skills and/or content embedded in the unit. Formativeassessments are taken frequently, after a student has practiced a skill or become familiar with content. Examples offormative assessments include but are not limited to exit tickets, paragraphs, oral check for understanding, warmups, stages in a large project, etc. On group projects, students will receive a grade for individual work. A group grade may also be given. Grades are based on achievement of Colorado Academic Standards and grade level expectations.Class ExpectationsMissing or incomplete assignments/assessments for this course: Superintendent Policies 6280 Homework and 6281Make-Up Work, will be followed for this course. All class materials need to be present everydayStudents need to be engaged and attentive in classRespect all classroom rulesStudent ExpectationsGrading PolicyThe purpose of grading is to communicate to both students and parents what a studentknows and can demonstrate at a given point during the course. In this course, student grades will be based solely on achievement of standards, noteffort, behavior, or attitude.Testing PolicyEach unit test is weighted equally. Reassessment opportunities will be given for eachexam. Students will be permitted to reassess 2 exams in the first semester and 1 exam inthe second semester.Requirements to Be Eligible to reassess:1.
