Southwestern’s2022 Distinguished AlumCarolyn ThompsonSouthwestern Oregon Community College ispleased to announce the selection of CarolynThompson of North Bend as the 2022Distinguished Alum. The Distinguished Alumniaward recognizes individuals who havedemonstrated significant contributions to theirprofessions, communities, or academia.Thompson grew up in Coos Bay. She movedthrough the foster care system with a desire tosucceed, dedicating her energy to excelling instudies and graduating high school.“The one thing I could always count on in my lifewas school. It started at 8:30 in the morning. Itfed me. It nurtured my spirit and my soul,”Thompson said. “I could have gone a lot ofplaces, but my money went furthest at SWOCC.It was just what I needed, a personalizededucation that challenged me.”To Degree List

After earning an Associate of Arts Degree inBusiness Administration and Management in1984 from Southwestern, she moved on toOregon State University graduating with aBachelor of Science in Business Administration in1986.She went to work as a certified publicaccountant, eventually returning to practice inCoos Bay. From here, she has dedicated herpersonal life and career to improving herprofession, community, and educationalopportunities for others. Thompson serves on theSouthwestern Oregon Community CollegeFoundation board of trustees, working toincrease scholarships.She has taught at Southwestern at times andhas been actively involved for many years as avolunteer in government and service clubs. Thisincluded work with North Bend School Board,Coos Bay Schools Foundation, Zonta Club of theCoos Bay Area, Dance Umbrella for South CoastOregon, Bay Area Chamber of Commerce andFord Family Leadership Institute.To Degree List
