Our staff have done a wonderful job supporting and encouraging our studentsto excel and be the best they can possibly be; as a result many of our students haveachieved their personal goals. Some have achieved in their sporting fields, their artisticpursuits and others have achieved academically. I have thoroughly enjoyed the times I havebeen able to engage with the students and those that have followed us on Facebook mayhave seen the many opportunities I have grabbed a selfie when judging, spectating orcheering them on in their pursuits. One of my favourite parts of this job is being able to seeour students involved in the school and the many activities that are available for them. I havealso enjoyed being able to share with our community the many individual successes that ourstudents have had outside of school on our Facebook page. Please keep sending thesewonderful achievements through to the school; we love to celebrate all aspects of ourstudents’ lives.We have said goodbye to our wonderful Year 12 students and I wish them well in their futureendeavors. The Student Leaders have embraced their role this year and worked hard withthe Student Services team to raise money for various charities and their own schoolcommunity. The School Captains and the Year 12 Leadership team have introduced manyinitiatives this year which have been embraced by the school as good practice; I thank themfor leaving a lasting mark on this team. Also, a big thank you to all the Student Leaders forthe help and support they have given at our assemblies, parent nights and focus weeks runby Student Services.My sincere thanks to the school community and for all the support, acknowledgement andfeedback we have received. It has been such a positive year and the way that you haveembraced our changes has allowed us to share the many positives that are happening withinthe school. To the school staff who continue to work hard to provide students with the verybest educational experiences and learning within the school, I cannot thank you enough.Finally I would like to farewell the staff who leave us and thank them for the support theyhave given the school: Dana Rajanaygam (HASS), Prue Kirsch (Phys Ed) and GeraldineThomas (Science). I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Ms Laura Moore whobecame our Associate Principal for the year after the sudden loss of Mr Justin Davies. MsMoore has done a wonderful job in this role and will be returning next year as our HOSS ofYear 9 and 10 students. Mr Stephen Mounsey will join us next year as Associate Principal ofStudent Services.Thank you to all of our students, staff, parents, caregivers and community members for theirsupport in making this such a wonderful and productive year. Being a proactive and enthusiastic member of theStudent Services Team.House Coordinator: Mr Paul WestonHouse Background:In May 1830, whilst carrying settlers tothe West Australian coast, a sailing ship‘Rockingham’ captained by ThomasPeel was blown ashore. After this, Peelresided in the newly aptly namedRockingham. Peel was eventuallygranted ownership of the land extendingfrom Cockburn Sound to the MurrayRiver. Facing hardships along the way,Peels failures were often partly due to series ofunfortunate events. Peel was described as a man whowas proud and hot tempered yet he held his vision,courage and strict standards of behaviour. The

land is now protected as crown land and a nature reserve.On the reef there is an array of fauna including sponges,urchins, and molluscs, bottlenose dophins, grey sharks,great white sharks, Australian sea lions and turtles. The island is hometo Australian sea lions, bottlenosedolphins and a large range of marine bird life. NewZealand fur seals are frequent visitors. Students dressed up and celebratedwith staff the conclusion of their 5 years at RockinghamSenior High School. A special mention to the SchoolCaptain, Josh Gray who dressed up as Mr Koios on theday (fake nose included).Intensity students have always lived up to their values ofStrength, Tenacity and Love. We would like to praise thestudents for their wonderful behaviour and for thewonderful memories that they have given us over the past5 years.

YEAR 12 VALEDICTORYYEAR 9 SCIENCEThe Class of 2018 had their Valedictory Ceremony at theMandurah Performing Arts Centre on Monday October 15.This year, in a change to previous years, students sat onthe stage throughout the event, and the Dignitaries andstaff sat in the audience. Our students looked amazing andtheir parents were able to focus on the achievements of theClass of 2018. Our Student Captains Joshua Gray andCaitlin Evans gave wonderful heartfelt speeches of theirtime spent at the school. This amazing group of studentsare now ready to take on the world and we wish you well inall your endeavours.This term, 2 teams of Year 9 Science competed for thefirst time in the SUBs competition at Northlake SeniorCampus. This event saw many teams from other schoolscompeting in this STEAM project. With a full day ofpresentations and demonstrations of the models they haddeveloped our students managed to rise above thecompetition to win 1st and 2nd place in the mini ROVSenior Division! This was a huge achievement for ourstudents when you consider they were competing againstschools that have been on television for their engagementin the STEAM Program.Clare Clayton, HOLA Science, said that “the studentshave done the school so proud and their hard work wasobvious! Chas King is also an amazing teacher and it’sfantastic to see such a wonderful outcome for her and herstudents. “A big thank you to the parents and the companies thatsponsored and supported the students throughout theproject; it was greatly appreciated.ORIENTATION DAYYear 6 students who will be attending the school in 2019,came to the school’s annual Orientation Day on 30November 2018. Orientation Day for our students took ona new look, with students spending the day with the 2teachers who will be their main teachers next year.A big thank you to our Student leaders who once againsupported this important day by showing parents andstudents to the Gym, and acted as support for thesestudents in their classes throughout the day.Students and parents were introduced to the many staffthat they would be working with next year and heardinspirational words from the Principal, Mr Stan Koios andmet our School Board Chair, Patchara Weggers.Many of the students that attended had the privilege ofbeing a part of the Transition Week when the feederPrimary Schools each spent a day in the high school todiscover what a day in high school looked like. For somethough, this was their first visit to the school and they hadthe opportunity to meet with their new class mates. Welook forward to helping you grow to “be your best” throughout the next 6 years.

YR 11 HUMAN BIOLOGYWHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE LIBRARY?This year our Year 11 students had the opportunity to visitthe Harry Perkins Biodiversity centre. This was a fantasticopportunity for students to link the curriculum they havebeen learning in the classroom with the real word and thework opportunities open to them in the future.The Library has been very busy this term with its manyactivities. Below are a few of their displays.Remembrance Day 2018In conjunction with Remembrance Day 2018 the librarycreated their annual Remembrance Day display.Mannequins were dressed in outfits similar to those wornby the men and women during the First World War. Thelibrary has a large collection of World War One literaturewhich was on display for students to view.Roald Dahl Day 2018September 13th is the worldwide celebration of Roald Dahl.Roald Dahl is one of the student’s favourite authors withinthe Rockingham Senior High School Library and a displaywas developed in order to showcase the Roald Dahl novelswe have within the library.TELETHONOn Sunday 21 October 2018, Mr Isaac Thomas and 3 ofour students (Ankia Mentjies, Waaka Hepi and SabrinaMcKay Tukerman) appeared on Telethon . They presenteda cheque to Telethon for money raised by the school duringthe annual Tryathon event. This year students who tookpart in the school's Tryathon raised 26,500 for Telethon.This was a wonderful opportunity for us all to celebrate inthe wonderful achievement of our students raising moneyfor the Perth Community.Don’t Judge a Book by its CoverYou can’t judge a book by its cover. This interactive displayallowed students to borrow a book from the library, butthere was one condition. Students were unaware of thebook they were borrowing and were taking home a mysteryread.

James Foley WorkshopOn Tuesday December 11 author and illustrator, JamesFoley visited the Rockingham Senior High School Libraryto host an interactive workshop with students from Years 7and 8. James Foley explained the process behindillustrating the book My Dead Bunny and examinedcharacter design with students. Students were able to puttheir illustrative knowledge into action and practicedrawing the different facial expressions shown throughoutthe workshop. At the end of the session James Foleydrew a picture of the main character from the book MyDead Bunny and donated it to be displayed in the library.YEAR 11 STUDENTSOn Tuesday 20 November, students engaged in theProcess Plant Operations course were able to visit theKleenheat refinery in Kwinana for a site tour. Two of ourYear 11 students, Kaleb Parker and Chantelle Whitaker,are engaged in this innovative program. The studentswere able to see how a gas refinery works and operatesand were able to see in a practical setting a lot of theskills and knowledge they have been learning in theircourse.NETBALL INCLUSION DAYThe Year 7 & 8 ESC students had a fabulous timeparticipating in tabloid activities and a round robincompetition, as part of our Netball Inclusion Day. Thisevent was planned and delivered by our Year 10Specialist Netball girls, with a little help from the Year 9Netballers, at the Mike Barnett Sport Complex. TheNetballers have been completing their FoundationCoaching and Umpiring accreditations, culminating inthis final assessment for the Year 10's.MUSICThe finale to the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra’s (WAYJO)yearlong focus on Women in Jazz saw Rockingham SHSstudents being wowed by one of Perth’s newest jazzensembles, the Artemis Orchestra. The music ofAustralia’s great female composers and arrangers dazzledstudents, and had them so engaged in this interactiveperformance. We would like to thank WAYJO forsponsoring this valuable event and we look forward toseeing more live music in the future.Thank you to the lovely EA's and Miss Kirsch whohelped out with this event. We really do appreciate yourefforts. Well done to the ESC students. You all didsuch a fantastic job, and played some awesome Netball!It was so great to see you all have so much fun andmake new friends on the day!We are so very proud of the Year 9 & 10 SpecialistNetball girls. you all did an amazing job, showing suchpatience, compassion and maturity. NETBALLINCLUSIONDAYSPECIALISTNETBALLSpecialist Netball Term 4 UpdateThings have been quite busy in the Netball Program thisterm. Here is a summary of what has been happening:Netball WA Ambassador Visit - 25 OctoberWe were lucky enough to have Sarah Gray, the SportDevelopment Officer (Player/Coach) from Netball WAcome down to work with us. Our Year 7 & 8's learnt aboutall things that are unique to Netball, the importance ofschool-netball-life balance and the Netball DevelopmentPathway. The Year 10's participated in a training sessionfocused on decision making.Rock-Well Carnival - 31 OctoberSome great netball was on display in the inaugural RockWell Carnival held at Success Netball Association. Ourfull Netball contingent participated and we are superproud of how you all conducted yourselves, putting insome great performances. Well done!Match Play Assessment Day - 15 NovemberWe had our final Match Play Assessment Day for theyear with our full Netball contingent involved. In whatwere warm conditions, the girls participated in a roundrobin, 5 a-side format, with rolling substitutions. Onceagain you all did a fantastic job, showing high levels ofmaturity, composure and self management. We areconstantly impressed by this unique set of skills that youdisplay on top of your Netball.THE ARTSOn Tuesday 4 December, the Performing Arts studentsparticipated in “A Rockin' Christmas”, a celebration of thepersonal growth and teamwork put in by all Music andDance students over the past school year. The RichardDraper Centre was filled to the brim with supportivefamily, friends and teachers who enjoyed everything fromSolo Vocal Performances to Christmas Themed Dancesof troupes with more than 30 dancers.One particular performance that stood out was from theChoir, and their rendition of Walking in a WinterWonderland for Mr Koios!Many thanks go to Emily Phyllis-Vidler for hosting theevening, to Mrs Fay, Mr Burke, Mrs Brown and all theInstrumental Teachers for their hard work putting thisevent together. The Arts Department really appreciatethe time and effort students have put into their learningthis year, and would like to wish families a wonderfulChristmas and a Happy New Year.

YEAR 7 ZOO EXCURSIONOn Tuesday 4 December, Miss Rotheram and I,accompanied by Mr Wake, took our Year 7 class toexplore Perth Zoo. We learned about the threats anddangers facing Western Australian native animals, andeven got to meet a couple! We then split up into groupsand took our own journeys through the Asian Rainforest,the African Savannah and on an Australian Bush Walk.One of the most anticipated events of the day, aftermissing out at Elizabeth Quay last time, was riding the 100year old carousel. Overall it was a fantastic (if exhausting!)way to end the year with a wonderfully curious and uniquegroup of young men and women. Thank you for anamazing year, I am very proud to have known and taughtyou all - Miss DamonseYEAR 10 RIVER CRUISEOur Year 10 River Cruise was held on 6 December.Students and staff who attended the event has a fantastictime dancing the night away on the Swan River. Therewas so much laughter and dancing throughout the eventthat by the time the event was finished, it felt much laterthan it was. This event is always a great way to celebratethe end of Middle Schooling.

YEAR 9 RUGBYfinally Carnac. The feedback from students, staff andparents was that it was a well organised and enjoyableday.Our Year 9 Rugby League Academy students made it tothe Grand Final this term. The game took place atthe NRL WA Training & Education Centre.Both schools Butler College and Rockingham Senior HighSchool, saved their best performance for last, with anoutstanding display of Rugby League.Butler took an early lead, and went up 12-0, dominatingthe majority of the first half. A late Rockingham try sawthem halve the deficit, and trail 12-6 at Half Time.The second half started with a bang, with Rockinghamlevelling scores at 12-all. Butler then replied straight fromthe kick off, gaining possession and stretching their leadto 18-12. Another quick try saw Butler lead 22-12, with 10minutes remaining.The game then erupted, with Rockingham scoring from a60m break, closing the gap to 22-16. A try on the strokeof full time saw Rockingham bring the score to 22-20,with the kick to occur after the siren. A missed kick fromRockingham meant the final score ended up 22-20, withButler being crowned champions of the Year 9competition for the first time!A big congratulations to the Year 9 team who played avery strong game. You did a great job representing theschool.ATHLETICS CARNIVALWith the naming of the new school Houses, studentswere a part of the Whole of School Athletics Carnival.Rockingham Senior High School had gone away fromholding this event, but this year the Health & PhysicalEducation Department took on the challenge oforganising this event for all staff and students.Thursday 6 December saw our staff and students take tothe field in a number of organised and fun events for all.The competition started early though, with the studentsand staff dressed in their House colours. The oval was ariot of colours, the behaviour was outstanding and thecompetition was friendly.This was the first House completion and we saw Peel winthe overall event, with Stirling second, Peron third andACADEMIC AWARDS ASSEBLYWednesday 12 December we held our last Whole ofSchool Assembly for the year. This year, in a continuationwith the different way we are approaching our events, wewanted to celebrate the students Academic successes atthe end of the year, instead of at the beginning of the year,as we have in the past.We increased the number of subject awards to ensure thatwe are able to celebrate all students achievements bethey in Dance, Metal work, English etc. It was wonderfulto see the number of students who have worked hard toreach the top in their subject areas. What we had notexpected was the number of certificates that wereawarded to students in their Year group for Gold, Silverand Bronze awards for the number of A’s awarded in theirreports.Year 7 students were awarded 9 Silver badges and 36

Bronze awards.Year 8 students (Aequalitas) were awarded 1 Gold, 7Silver and 29 Bronze awards.Year 9 students (Fides) were awarded 7 Gold, 15 Silverand 39 Bronze awards.Year 10 students (Electra) were awarded 7 Gold, 6Silver and 29 Bronze awards.Year 11 students (Oculus) had their certificates mailedout to them to ensure that their successes wererecognised at the same time.STUDENT SERVICES2018 HALLOWEEN DRESS UPOur Year 11 Student Leaders organised a Halloweendress up day today. Students also enjoyed games andface painting. A total of 351.85 was raised. Themoney is going buy bikes and school supplies forchildren in remote areas of Cambodia. Our students willfollow the progress of these children over the next year.A big thank you to all our parents who attended thisevent. It was wonderful for us to see the significantnumber of parents who attended this awards ceremony.P.A.R.T.Y ExcursionThis term a group of Year 11 students went to RoyalPerth Hospital to participate in the P.A.R.T.Y (PreventAlcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) program. Itwas an amazing day where students learnt about theeffects of risk taking behaviourincludingmajortraumainjuries. Students listened tospeakerswhohadexperienced major trauma,visitedtheemergencydepartment, trauma unit, ICUand rehabilitation. It was avery emotional and intenseday but the group got a lot outof it.Rockingham Senior High School is proud to be working in partnershipwith local business and industry to improve educational opportunities forstudents
