Our aim is to increase awareness of the substantialamount of ebXML-related activity occurring throughout the world today. This report—which represents our best initial and ongoing research at this time and may not beexhaustive--summarizes the status of close to 100 completed, ongoing orprogressive ebXML-related projects. ebXML is unique in the breadth of its standardsvision and arguably represents the culmination of all previous standards effortstoward a shared global Internet-based B2B framework. ebXML is complementary tomany existing standards, such as legacy EDI, XML-based business documentstandards, and Web Services. Decision makers, involved in global B2B commerceand responsible for making B2B infrastructure investments must evaluate theirbusiness strategies and consider the likely need to support trading partners who willwant to engage electronically using ebXML protocols. No truly successful technology or standard is an island. It is therefore exciting towitness ebXML adapting, evolving and growing through research and deploymentaround the world. Over 2,000 people contributed to the original ebXML developmentefforts, made public in May 2001. Since then, continuing standards development, pursued jointly by OASIS and UN/CEFEACT, has being augmented by creative realworld projects applying ebXML with other technologies such as Web Services, XMLas a whole, as well as legacy EDI. Major vendors have developed ebXML supportinto their flagship products and new ebXML vendors are emerging. Key industrysectors and government entities are deploying new eBusiness applications that areserving as benchmarks in the adoption of ebXML globally. Industry groups andstandards bodies are working to bring their vocabularies into alignment aroundebXML, promising a new level of interoperability that industry has been seeking formore than a decade. From: the OASIS ebXML Awareness Team: http://www.ebxml.org/ebxml jmt1See last page of this document for legal copyright statement and terms of use and restrictions.22 December 2003OASIS ebXML Awareness Team, ebXML.orgPage 1

Moreover, ebXML is clearly the only trend fororganised business communities. The general recommendation is to followebXML standards as much as possible. This is coherent with the fact thatmany exchanges between European administrations reflect the interactionsbetween those administrations and the national business world.”For complete details see: don, England, May 2003: The annual ebXML user conferenceIn May, the ebXML user conference was held in London, England. Projectsworldwide from Europe to Asia were highlighted – customs in India, business processefforts and interoperability demonstrations in Europe, and the growth of ebXML testcenters worldwide. For more information slides/The 10th ebXML Asia Committee Asia meeting was held at Okinawa in Japan from4-6 December 2003.OASIS announces their Standards Registry 15 January 2004 to the public.Specifications NewsThe core components specification 2.0 was approved in September 2003. We have also tallied the industry groups whohave endorsed ebXML as their approach, and then we have tabulated availablevendor products from almost thirty companies worldwide, from the worlds’ largestsoftware companies through to small industry solution providers.ebXML 6040200AsiaEuropeNorth AmericaAdoption by RegionFigure 1 Comparison of ebXML adoption by region, number / size / scope of projects(as of 22 December 2003)Note the sustantial growth, particularly in Government in Asia and Europe, with steady climbsoverall since the last report in the spring 2003.22 December 2003OASIS ebXML Awareness Team, ebXML.orgPage 4

Though the amount of interestin ebXML outside North America is substantial, key industry sectors in which the USis dominant worldwide are once again leading with ebXML (as they did with EDI).This can be expected to influence those sectors particularly. In addition much collaborative work is developing in North America where the webservice aspects of ebXML are being purposed alongside the traditional deploymentmodels. These new patterns of use where ebXML is extending those older systemsand creating solutions that had previously proved intractable with EDI is a trendexpected to accelerate through 2003 as the underlying ebXML based technologiescontinue to mature.22 December 2003OASIS ebXML Awareness Team, ebXML.orgPage 6

All Rights Reserved.EuropeThe eBusiness landscape in Europe is defined today by the use of the UN/CEFACTEDIFACT messaging and other legacy standards. As such Europe has alwaysconsidered EDIFACT messaging support as vital to ebXML. Europe has alsosponsored a significant amount of the development work of ebXML, and is now thecenter of the continuing eBusiness technical architecture based work. The European Union has also recognized the vital role that ebXML can play instandardizing interchanges between member countries and as such is aggressivelypromoting a number of initiatives. Allied with this has been the early work of theEuropean eBusiness standards bodies themselves in facilitating pilot projects todemonstrate using EDIFACT payloads with ebXML components.Several commercial initiatives are underway specifically for applications withinEurope. There is also significant commercial cooperation and adoption of XMLbased specifications between North America and Europe, examples include SWIFTintra-banking, OTA travel specifications, and UCC and EAN all of whom are alsoembracing ebXML technologies.22 December 2003OASIS ebXML Awareness Team, ebXML.orgPage 14
