TORNADORELIEFOn December 11, 2021, a devastating seriesof tornadoes struck Kentucky. In the daysthat followed the storms, Med Center HealthFoundation worked with hospital leadership toestablish the Med Center Health EmployeeTornado Relief Fund. Med Center Healthemployees were asked to donate to help theircolleagues and friends. The outpouring ofsupport was incredible. To date, this fund hasraised more than 155,000 to assist employeesimpacted by the storms. In addition toemployees, many of the Foundation’s communitypartners contributed to help those in need. The tornado truly turned preregistration clerkBritt Miller’s life upside down. As she, herPAGE 2husband and their little dog huddled in theirbathroom, they heard the sound of a freight traincoming right at them. “It was surreal,” she said.“The house was coming apart and all the lightswere still on. Then the floor started moving.”The next thing she knew, she was trapped underthe rubble of their home almost 100 yards away.Rescuers found Britt and her husband when theyheard the dog barking. Although severely injured, both survived; and their dog was only slightlyinjured. Through the tornado relief fund, theywere able to replace their vehicle and help paymedical bills. “This has all made me not sweat thesmall stuff,” Britt said, “and it’s made me strongerbecause we survived it. We’re so thankful for thehelp we received through the tornado relief fund.”Halil Asllani, with The Medical Center at BowlingGreen Environmental Services Department, was asleep with his wife when two of theirdaughters came into the room crying, “Daddy, daddy, a tornado is coming!” He didn’t believethem at first, but then realized they really werein danger. He gathered his family together tohide in a closet—just a few seconds later, the

Pictured with Halil and Britt are Tammy Basham, Shelby Harwood, Steve Ramsey andAmy Hardin (back row) who served as core members of the team who helped administer the MedCenter Health Employee Tornado Relief Fund. The tornado relief fund has assisted more than40 Med Center Health employees affected by thestorm, ranging from replacing groceries lost dueto power outages to purchasing vehicles.Britt Miller’s home was destroyed during the tornado thatravaged her neighborhood.tornado hit. “It was like a bomb,” he said. “I comefrom a country where there has been war since1999. This was like that, but sudden, withoutwarning.” The tornado hit the house, shatteringthe windows and destroying the family car. “MedCenter Health found us a place to stay that dayand soon after a little house where we lived forthree weeks. We are grateful for all the help wehave received.” Through the tornado relief fund, the Asllanis also received a vehicle to replace onelost to the storm.Other items the fund has helped provide are: Hotel rooms immediately following the storms Rent/deposits on new places to live Baby food and clothes Christmas presents and decorations for familieswith children Insurance deductibles Eyeglasses Generators Clothing, linens and bedclothes Furniture and appliancesMed Center Health Foundation is grateful toeveryone who contributed to the TornadoRelief Fund. Through grants and communityevents, Med Center Health Foundation raised fundsthat made a difference in our communities.WHAS Crusade for ChildrenThanks to a 10,000 grant received from WHAS Crusade for Children, phototherapy equipmentupgrades were purchased for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
