LRA by ELISA/ACT Case Study of a 27-year-old Femalewith Chronic Acne Clinical Specialist: Anne Szpindor, MD - Chicago, ILPrepared by Russell Jaffe, MD, Ph.D. and Jayashree Mani, MS, CCNThis report discusses Sarah, a 27-yearold woman with a more than five-yearhistory of chronic acne.BACKGROUND: Acne means anoutbreak of bacterial growth and ‘cleanup’ cell responses in the sebaceous glandsof the skin. These glands are connectedto hair follicles; they produce an oilysubstance called sebum. An acne lesionforms when a hair follicle becomesgrossly apparent due to being pluggedwith sebum and dead cell debris. The emergence of acne is often associated with changes or ‘fluxes’ in levels ofandrogenic hormones in the body.Whilethis usually occurs between the ages of12 and 21, it can emerge at any agewhen hormonally active chemicals ofcertain types circulate actively inthe body. Common over- the-counterproducts contain somewhat harshchemicals such as benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid, alcohol and / or sulfur as‘active’ ingredients. While they maysuppress the acne for a short time,a rebound reaction is common with thereappearance of acne. Tetracyclineand / or doxycycline antibiotics areprescribed commonly to ‘fight’ the skininfections. Our body’s immune system is responsiblefor protection from diseases as well asrepair from wear and tear of our skin. Ifour immune system weakens, our bodystarts showing symptoms of disorder ordisease. Acne can be one such indicator. There are many factors that affect ourimmune system. These include antibioticoveruse and misuse in animal feedas well as in people, persisting organicpollutants (POPs) that are oftenhormone disruptors, food toxincontamination and nutrient depletion, toxic minerals, distress / emotionaldisturbance, genetic disposition, and, perhaps most important, while alsobeing most accessible to our ability toinfluence, lifestyle choices.Boosting our immune system by applyingthe first line comprehensive care(FLCC) treatment guide provided withthe LRA by ELISA/ACT tests wasparticularly effective in this case.MEDICAL HISTORY: Sarah presentedwith chronic acne on the face, chappedlips, and dry eyes in October 2002 thatshe reported to have suffered from forthe last 5 years. A lawyer by profession, she was used to a moderate stresslevel in daily life. She reports that she‘slept well’.PRIMARY THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS: On presentation, shereports taking 20 mg. Accutane everyother day (QOD). While it did notalleviate the symptoms, it was associatedwith the onset of dry eyes. A regimen of

Zinc and Omega 3 fish oils had alsobeen tried. The LRA by ELISA/ACT tests weretaken in September 2002 with Sarahstarting the program after beingcounseled on her return visit thefollowing month. Out of a total of 378items tested, Sarah had 7 strongreactions and 7 moderate reactionsthat included:STRONGREACTIONS: Romainelettuce, Raspberry, Flaxseed/linseed oil,2-Methyl pentane, 3-Methyl pentane,Nickel metallic catalysts, and Ponceau2R (red colorant)could and, within just a couple ofmonths, found her acne clearing up. Shewas asked to come for a follow up visitin December 2003. By that time she wasin sustained remission.THREE YEARS LATER: Sarah is stillfree of acne. She maintains the dramaticimprovements received by following herFLCC plan based on her individual LRAby ELISA/ACT tests results as well asthe treatment plan that her doctorincorporated into her comprehensiveand successful treatment care plan andcase management.MODERATE REACTIONS: Amaranth,Cottonseed oil, Rhubarb, Heptachlor,Dog dander, Cadmium, and CaffeineINITIALCLINICALOUTCOME:After getting educated about herindividualized program, Sarah carefullyavoided all her reactants as best sheLRA by ELISA/ACT tests and health plans: Ask your doctor now.Anyone with chronic acne knows the costs and frustrations from searching for help – andnot getting results. LRA by ELISA/ACT Case Study of a 25-Year-OldFemale with Refractory AsthmaPrepared by Tori Trocki, MS, CCNHISTORY: Debbie was diagnosed withasthma at age three. Not a singleperson in Debbie’s family had eversuffered from asthma, so they were veryunfamiliar with this condition. Duringher initial office visit, the doctorsuggested that her recent bout ofpneumonia could have stimulatedher asthmatic condition. The doctorimmediately gave Debbie medication toprevent future asthma attacks. Hermother had to give away their cat andtake away all of her stuffed animals. Shehad to have a humidifier in her room andoften had to sit in the bathroom with ahot shower running to inhale the steamto help control the attacks. Debbiefrequently received shots and usedliquid medication until her freshmanyear in high school when she was giventhree different inhalers to control herasthma. As a young adult, her asthmalessened slightly, but she was dependenton inhalers during the allergy seasonand when she played sports or exercised.Debbie was given no dietary counselingor delayed allergy testing prior toAugust 2001.PRIMARY PROBLEMS:Asthma attacks ofunknown cause. Immediate (IgE)allergies to dust, pollen, molds, cats, anddogs were identified by RAST tests.THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS:Debbie had undergone treatment forasthma, including shots, liquid antihistamine medication, and inhalers once herasthma was established.Debbie took the LRA by ELISA/ACT tests in August 2001 when she wastwenty-five years old. Debbie’s LRA byELISA/ACT test results were as follows:STRONG REACTIONS: Cola, tuna, molasses, and cuminMODERATE REACTIONS: Broccoli, coffee, celery, hydrogenated oil, pistachio, tetrachloroethylene, aluminum, and mushroomIMPLEMENTATION:Debbiewasinformed on how to substitute theitems to which she had a strongreaction as well as those to whichthe reaction was moderate. Whileeliminating the reactive items, she alsoadded nutritional supplementation to herdiet, which was recommended with herLRA by ELISA/ACT test results.CLINICAL OUTCOME: A few weeksafter taking the LRA by ELISA/ACTtests, Debbie’s immediate allergies topollen, trees, and molds were cleared. She no longer had a runny nose, wateryeyes, and wheezing during the night thatshe had experienced during the last 22years. Further, Debbie’s asthma attackssubsided. She was able to discontinueuse of the inhaler during the day, but shestill needed her inhaler occasionallyduring strenuous workouts.Six months later, Debbie is not using herinhaler and is almost 100% free fromasthma. She has rotated the foods that

she reacted to on the LRA byELISA/ACT tests back into her dietand is on a maintenance nutritionalsupplement program. Debbie is nowable to lead a normal life without theworries of her asthma.SIX-MONTH FOLLOW-UP: After sixmonths, Debbie retested and had strongreactions to aluminum, methoxychlor, cola, sucanat, garbanzo bean, andechinacea. She also had moderatereactions to locust bean gum, cherry, grapefruit, peach, poppy seed, andcabbage/brussels sprouts. The resultsshow that she continues to have adelayed sensitivity to cola and aluminum. However, when asked, Debbie admittedto exposing herself to these itemsduring the six-month avoidance phase. Her substitution of the other items wasmore systematic. This is an example ofhow precise LRA by ELISA/ACT testscan be.The items that were systematicallysubstituted lost their immune reactivity. The two out of 12 reactive substancesfor which exposure persisted were theones whose reactivity was retained. The items to which Debbie currentlyshows a sensitivity signify improvementin her immune defense and repairsystems. Identification of these itemswhose reactivity was acquired in thepast six months affords her the ability tofurther reduce the burden on herdigestive and immune systems. Thissystematic substitution allows anenvironment to develop in which shecan repair and rebuild her digestivecompetences and her neuro-immunohormonal system. Once digestion hasbeen fully repaired, homeostaticresilience and reserves can be rebuilt. This is accompanied by loss of reactivelymphocytes by clonal deletion or byapoptosis. This means that through thisrepair and resetting the system thebody’s healing capacities can be mostactively engaged. In summary, if Debbie and herfamily had known about the LRA byELISA/ACT tests and treatmentprogram earlier in her life, Debbie’smany years of asthma medication andsuffering might have been prevented.LRA by ELISA/ACT tests and health plans: Ask your doctor now.Anyone with refractory asthma knows the costs and frustrations from searching forhelp – and not getting results. LRA by ELISA/ACT Case Study of a 6-Year-Old Malewith Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)Prepared by Susan E. Brown, Ph.D.HISTORY:As an infant, Brian had recurrentinfections with recurrent antibiotic use.Hyperactivity and behavior problemsbegan at 18 months of age with weaning. He was extremely hyperactive, climbingaround, into things, and difficult tohandle. Brian could not be left alone.Brian’s mother reported normal speechdevelopment until about age two.According to his mother, Brian waslosing the ability to speak as he wasweaned. As the child moved into eatingregular food, his mother noted thatboth his behavior and speech began todeteriorate. At two years of age, Brianwas not speaking. It was as if he couldnot hear and was in a world of his own.His hearing was tested, and he didnot have a hearing problem. Shortlythereafter, still two years of age, Brianwas diagnosed as autistic. At two andone-half years of age, he was prescribedRitalin. His mother never implementedthe prescription, but began seekingalternative solutions.PRIMARY PROBLEMS: Hyperactivity, behavior problems, and speech difficultiesTHERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS:The child had undergone the commonconventional treatment for recurrentinfections (antibiotics) and was recommended Ritalin for hyperactivity. The LRA by ELISA/ACT test was takenin April 1994 when Brian was threeyears old.* Brian’s LRA by ELISA/ACTtest results were as follows:STRONG REACTIONS: Dairy, sugar, tobacco, bass, alfalfa, catfish, chocolate, red oilINTERMEDIATE REACTIONS: Arsenic, sodium benzoate, lamb, apple, sugars(various), benzene, cola, lima bean (hisfavorite food), cis-dichloroethylene,coconut, rose hips, squash, latex, brownrice, (he consumed a lot of rice milk),baker’s yeast, astragalus.Overall, Brian was reactive to 24 of the300 substances tested. Many of thereactive foods were commonly eatenand among his favorites (rice, apple, lima beans, catfish, and sugar).Interestingly enough, even before takingthe LRA by ELISA/ACT test, his motherhad suspected problems for Brian withdairy, apple juice, and sugar.IMPLEMENTATION: Brian was takenoff all foods to which he had a strongreaction as well as most of those towhich the reaction was intermediatewith the exception of rice (in rice milk)and some sugars. He was also put on anutritional supplement program, whichincluded a multi-vitamin, additional Bvitamins, acidophilus, and DMG.IMMEDIATE OUTCOME: Within oneweek of eliminating the reactive foods,Brian’s mother reported great improve-

ment in his behavior. As she explains, hewas able to follow directions, calmdown, sit down, and concentrate ontasks. His attentiveness also improved.Brian’s teachers were asked to complywith the food elimination, and they did.One day, however, a substitute teacherunwittingly gave Brian a cookie, and herather immediately developed behaviorproblems, such as fighting with otherkids. As his mother reported, the teacherswere readily convinced of the importanceof these dietary restrictions for Brian.Within one month, his parents foundthat Brian’s behavioral problems andhyperactivity were 80% better. Hisattention and focusing ability was alsoan estimated 80% better. With thecalming, he could now concentrate. Inaddition, his speech improved about20% within the short term, andimprovement continues with time.Interestingly enough, when he wasfinally taken off rice (rice milk) at agefive, Brian again experienced dramaticimprovement. He was able to speak andreason more, behaved even better inthe classroom, calmed down, and hadbetter attention.LONG-TERM OUTCOME: It is nowabout three and one-half years sincetesting, and Brian is in kindergarten.Eighty to 85% of the time he is inregular classrooms. He no longer hasthe diagnosis of being autistic and hasgone from being classified as moderatelyto only mildly mentally disabled. Bynext year, he is expected to be fullymainstreamed.Brian’s mother reports that hishyperactivity and behavior are well incontrol and considered rather normalfor a child his age. In general, behavioralflares are associated with exposure to areactive substance such as chocolate ora dairy food.Brian’s mother also reports that theelimination and new diet got easier overtime. Family members have seen thevalue of this approach and comply, andthe schools also cooperate.* Please note that EAB did not offer theFood Coloring Block until 1997.LRA by ELISA/ACT tests and health plans: Ask your doctor now.Anyone with ADHD knows the costs and frustrations from searching for help – andnot getting results. LRA by ELISA/ACT Case Study of a 7-Year-Old Malewith Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)Prepared by Susan E. Brown, Ph.D.HISTORY: Eden had a history of problemssince infancy. From birth, it was clearthat he was a difficult child. Even inutero, he kicked excessively. As aninfant, he had colic and was hyperactive. As he grew older, he had morebehavioral problems, a lack of languagedevelopment, and was physically abusive.Eden suffered digestive problems andwas hypersensitive to light, touch, andsound. He exhibited various food cravingsand was later shown reactive to thesame substances he craved. At threeand one-half years of age, Eden wasclearly hyperactive, and a physiciansuggested that he might be autistic.PRIMARY PROBLEMS: Hyperactivity, behavior problems, digestive difficulties, hypersensitive, and speech delays.THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS:The child had undergone the commonconventional treatment for colic andchildhood digestive problems. The LRA by ELISA/ACT test was takenjust before Eden turned four. Overall, hewas reactive to 21 of the 300 substancestested.IMPLEMENTATION: Eden was taken offall foods to which he was foundreactive. Eden was also put on thesuggested nutritional supplement program, which included a hypoallergenic multivitamin/mineral, sulfur-containing aminoacids to aid in liver detoxification, acidophilus, buffered ascorbate, quercetin, and the like. Baths of Epsom’s salts andbaking soda were also given.IMMEDIATE OUTCOME: Eden’s motherreported that the LRA by ELISA/ACTtest helped immeasurably. Very quickly, she was able to sort out the substancesthat provoked the behavioral problemsand limited cognitive ability. In addition, she found that after clearing the delayedhypersensitivities, she was able to easilydetect and manage the immediatereactions. Previously, she had not beenable to identify these reactions, whichincluded casein and gluten.LONG-TERM OUTCOME: As Eden’smother summarized, benefits in hisspeech, behavior, and digestion wereseen immediately. Now he is seven andis much improved. He has goodlanguage skills, although he is stillbehind his peers. Eden’s behavior is fine80% to 90% of the time. The exceptionsoccur when he consumes foods to whichhe is reactive.LONG-TERM COMPLIANCE: Edencontinues on a modified diet andremains sensitive to many of the foodshe tested positive for three years ago.He also continues on a nutritionalsupplement program.PARENTS’ OBSERVATIONS ON THEKEYS TO EDEN’S SUCCESS: Thefamily found the LRA by ELISA/ACTtest of clear benefit for their child.

Furthermore, while implementing thedietary program for her son, Eden’smother came to realize that she alsohad food allergies and hypersensitivities,as did her husband. In that case, thefamily went on to build healthier andmore reactant-free diets as a groupbecause of the LRA by ELISA/ACTtesting that was done on their son.The family found the LRA byELISA/ACT test to be valuable andreport that they could not have had thissuccess without it.LRA by ELISA/ACT tests and health plans: Ask your doctor now.Anyone with ADHD knows the costs and frustrations from searching for help – andnot getting results. LRA by ELISA/ACT Case Study of a 13-Year-OldMale with Diabetes Prepared by Jayashree Mani, MS, CCNHISTORY: Bob was diagnosed with Type 1diabetes at the age of 11 with consistentblood glucose readings in the 350 mg/dlrange. At that time, his protein glycationmeasure of risk (HbA1c) was elevatedat 8%.Type 1 diabetes, previously known asjuvenile or insulin dependent diabetes, is acondition characterized by high bloodglucose levels caused by a profounddeficit in insulin production or function.Type 1 diabetes is generally consideredto be an autoimmune condition. Thebody's immune system is stimulated toattack and destroy the insulin-producingbeta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas produces too little or noinsulin. Type 1 diabetes develops mostoften in young people but can appearin adults.PRIMARY PROBLEMS: Type 1 diabetesand associated symptomsTHERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS:Bob’s main health goal was to reducehis glucose levels to a normal range. Inorder to achieve this goal, Bob’sphysician prescribed human insulin forhim. In addition to insulin, Bob’s uncle, who is a chiropractor, recommendedniacinamide and acetylcholine asprimary glucose-reducing agents. For awhile, this treatment helped lower hisglucose levels, and Bob’s need for insulindecreased gradually until his bloodglucose could be maintained at normallevels without any external humaninsulin.Unfortunately, after about 18 months,Bob’s glucose levels started climbingagain, and he had to go back on insulin.Starting at a low dose of 2-3 units ofinsulin a day, Bob reached a dosage levelas high as 10 units 3 times a day, yet hisglucose levels remained in the 300mg/dl range.Bob’s parents were very concerned, yetthey did not want to indiscriminatelyincrease the insulin dosage. Whendiscussing their concerns with Bob’sphysician, they learned about theremarkable results he had achieved withmany of his patients with autoimmuneconditions through the use of the LRAby ELISA/ACT tests and treatmentplan. Bob’s parents were eager for theirson to have the LRA by ELISA/ACT testto see if Bob could benefit from thisprogram as well. The LRA by ELISA/ACT w

the LRA by ELISA/ACT tests was particularly effective in this case. MEDICAL HISTORY: Sarah presented with chronic acne on the face, chapped lips, and dry eyes in October 2002 that she reported to have suffered from for the last 5 years. A lawyer by profession, she was used to a moderate stress level in daily life. She reports that she
