BatteryRatingsBatteries are rated accordingto a range of specifications andstandards. Understanding theseratings and their relevance to thebattery’s application and operatingconditions is key to selecting theright battery.CCA-18oTwice thepoweravailable 18oMCAMarine CrankingAmperesAHAmpere-Hour@ 20hrThis is a measurement of the current a fully chargedbattery can deliver for 30 seconds, whilst also maintaining avoltage of 7.2volts. This test is performed at a temperatureof -18 C, and is used to determine a battery’s ability to startthe engine and maintain sufficient voltage to power theignition requirements under severe cold starting conditions.Similar to CCA, MCA is used to measure the current a marinebattery can deliver for 30 seconds at a specific temperature.10ReserveCapacityFor many years, CCA (or Cold CrankingAmperes) has been widely used as abenchmark to measure and compare leadacid batteries – with the assumption beingthe higher the CCA, the better the battery.As a result, some manufacturers producebatteries with excessively high CCA ratingsto take advantage of this misconception. Butthere’s no such thing as a free lunch, and it’sthe same story with batteries.MCA tests are conducted at 0 C (instead of -18 C) and theresults are often 20 – 25% higher than the equivalent CCArating. Because of this, it is important to always compare likefor like, and never compare CCA to MCA, or vice-versa.Ah refers to the battery’s storage capacity, and is thecurrent a fully charged battery will deliver over a 20 hourperiod - before the voltage falls to 10.50 volts. An Ah test isalways performed at 25 C.AVAILABLEENERGYRC(Cold Cranking Amperes)HowImportantIs CCA?AVAILABLEENERGYIgnition, Lights,Radio Air,Conditioning,Electric WindowsAn RC rating refers to the length of time (in minutes) thata battery can deliver a current of 25 amps until the voltagedrops below 10.50 volts. This test is performed at 25 C, andrepresents a typical electrical load on a car under normalrunning conditions. Therefore, an RC rating is a goodindication of how many minutes a vehicle will run for in theevent of a charging system or alternator failure.Lead acid batteries contain lead plates,wrapped in separators to insulate andprevent them from touching each otherdirectly and creating a short circuit. Abattery can be made to achieve a higherCCA rating by simply adding more ofthese plates to the battery internals. Butin order to achieve this, both the leadplates and the separator material needsto be thinner – and this can have animpact on the strength and durability ofthese components.In colder climates, adding more platesand increasing the battery’s CCA ratingmay be desirable. However, in hotterclimates like what we experience herein Australia, having thicker lead platesto combat corrosion and more robustseparators are equally important ascranking capacity.At Century, we believe that it is far moreimportant to strike a balance betweenCCA and providing a long service life.Our batteries feature expertly designedinternal components and an extremelydurable construction to combat thecauses of battery failure and deliver whatAustralian motorists really want – longerlife and superior performance.So don’t be misled by high CCA ratings –they aren’t always better.11

In a conventional system the battery operates ina high state of charge and starts the vehicle two or three times per day.The capacity used to start the engine is replaced by the alternatorthroughout the duration of the journey.
