From The Home FrontFROM OLD HOUSE TO HOME SWEET HOMEEvent Founder Reflects on the Home That Inspired a Traditionit was in bad shape. This is where thetypical, more sensible buyer wouldhave turned on their heels and neverlooked back. With our naïve ambition,our Old House Journal magazines andtips from PBS’s This Old House, wepressed on, not fully realizing themission we had embarked on.I remember seeing it high upon thesnow-blanketed hill, set back fromthe street, knowing instantly that thisclassic English Tudor was the house forus. The deep red and blackish brownbricks covering the L-shaped façade,the steeply pitched roof, the classicgables and tall, mullioned windows allseemed to beckon us inside. Even thewide, solid, stone and brick chimneyhinted at the warmth that awaited uswithin those walls. Who knew the paththat would unfold from this visit withour realtor?Once inside we were met withthe reality that this home neededconsiderable work. Ugly wallpaper,outdated paint colors, heavy drapes,tattered carpeting and painted woodwork covered this home’s beauty;Everyone thought we were crazy. Oneperson even stated, “Congratulations,you just bought the most unsightlyhouse on the block;” but we loved ourugly duckling and we knew that witha little patience, ingenuity, some elbowgrease and help from trusted professionals, we could uncover the hiddenloveliness and reveal the swan. We hadcreative vision and recognized that this1929 beauty had great potential andcharacter.Over the years, with the help of manycapable experts, we modernized thekitchen, updated the HVAC, replacedwindows, rewired the electric, replacedthe roof, painted interiors, updated theplumbing and added a three-storyaddition, blending the old with the newseamlessly. Many projects we initiallyattempted on our own because of ourbudget. When we became muddledand stuck, we were always gratefulto the talented tradesmen who couldshare their expertise. Project by project,we met skilled professionals whohelped us restore our home to itsoriginal glory.The Old House New House HomeShow was born throughout this process. As we learned of helpful tips,strategies, products and professionals, we wanted to share the resourceswith other homeowners. Our passion for restoration led to a hobbythat created a career and ultimatelyblossomed into a business for ourfamily. We are grateful to the creativecontractors, award-winning remodelers, select experts, leading brands andskilled designers collaborating on thisevent. Featured RecipeFrench Toast CasseroleFrom the Kitchen of Sally BolandIngredients: 1 long loaf French bread8 large eggs3 cups whole milk4 teaspoons sugar3/4 teaspoons salt1 tablespoon vanilla2 tablespoons butterYields 8 servingsOptions: Thinly sliced apples can beplaced on top of the bread.Season them with cinnamon,sugar and nutmeg.5Directions:1. Generously butter a 9” x 13” baking dish.2. Cut bread into thick 1” slices. Arrange bread slicesin a single layer.3. Beat eggs with milk, sugar, salt and vanilla. Pourover bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight if possible.4. Remove from refrigerator and dot with butter. I preferto melt the butter and pour over bread. Pre-heat oven to350 degrees and bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutesuntil browned. Serve with your favorite syrup, freshfruit or toppings. Fried bacon brokeninto small pieces canbe sprinkled on top fora decadent finish. Other types of bread canbe used, but dense breadswork best.Sally Boland has been a treasuredmember of the Kennedy Productions teamsince 1996. This will be Sally’s last eventbefore her retirement. Focus on someone who communicates well, respondsto e-mails and calls in a timely manner,helps with design, game plan andexecution, and has extensive experiencealong with trustworthy referrals. Makesure they are licensed and bonded.When comparing contractors, be certainyou are comparing apples to apples.2. Throughout the building and remodeling process, you will be making manydecisions. Make decisions early andoften. Delayed decisions and changesdelay the work schedule. Also, avoidbeing a distraction to your project.timeis money.3. Have your contractor purchase thematerials. They tend to get better pricing and should pass on the savings toyou when they can. Don’t cut cornersand don’t put lipstick on a pig.4. Choose improvements that will addvalue to your home to maximize thebiggest return on your investment, forexample: kitchens, bathrooms and frontdoor curb appeal.5. Depending on the scope of work,make plans to be out of the house for aperiod of time. Projects such as sandingfloors, furnace shut off for HVAC workand large additions may require you torelocate; be sure to keep children andpets out of harm’s way. There will bedust and noise, without a doubt.6. Before youbegin your renovation, work out acontingency fund for extras; we recommend 10 to 15% of the total project.There may be unforeseen costs thatsurface beyond anyone’s control. Younever know what’s behind the wallsuntil you open them.8. When the payout is processed, nomore than 50% of payment shouldbe made up front.
