Ourfaculty members representover 10 countries and speak:Arabic, Chinese, Danish,Dutch, English, French,German, Italian, Hebrew,Japanese, Polish, Russian,Spanish and Yiddish. Wesponsor numerous activitiessuch as film festivals, trips,speakers, language clubs, anda wide variety of study abroadpossibilities. The Departmentof World Languages andCultures creates a dynamicenvironment that preparesstudents to become globalcitizens.MISSION STATEMENTThe Department of World Languages and Cultures is a culturally andintellectually diverse and welcoming community of faculty, staff, students,and alumni who value knowledge, multicultural awareness and the free andresponsible exchange of ideas. Through the exercise of analytical rigor in ourdifferent language and culture disciplines we and our students: criticallyinterpret language and symbols; thoroughly examine cultural artifacts anddiscourses; and seek to understand global, cultural, political, and historicalperspectives. Working with our faculty, our students learn how to read andthink analytically in English and in the target languages, communicateeffectively in speech and writing in both English and the target language,work with diverse partners, and participate fully in culturally diverseexperiences. The mission of the Department of World Languages andCultures is to help students acquire linguistic and cultural skills tocommunicate successfully in a language other than English, prepare studentsto appreciate linguistic and cultural diversity, and motivate them to continue,after graduation, for lifelong learning in the context of a global society in the21st century. The Department of World Languages and Cultures recognizesand follows in all its courses the World-Readiness Standards for learninglanguages set forth by ACTFL.CURRICULUMAll of our academic programs will teach students to read closely and thinkanalytically, write clearly, speak articulately, and evaluate and presentevidence wisely and accurately. TCs must alsohave taken the Spanish Praxis exam before beginning their student teaching.In order to enroll in WLC 390, students must have successfully completed 4courses above SPA 210 and earned a minimum rating of Intermediate Mid onthe ACTFL Oral Proficiency Exam.In order to receive a teaching license, the state of NJ now requires*-Spanish major (or at least 30 credits in Spanish with a variety of levels andtopics.)*-Pass the Spanish Language Praxis II (#5195) with a minimum score of 168*-A state-approved course in second language acquisition for ANYCERTIFICATION to teach Spanish (Pre-K, Elementary, Middle orSecondary.) The minor typically consists of 5 course units, although therequirements vary for the intensive language programs. A minimum grade ofC is required in all courses taken to fulfill the minor requirements. We encourage all our minors to study abroad. All courses takenabroad will count towards graduation. Join usin the heart of Spain — the AutonomousCommunity of Madrid — at the Universidadde Alcalá de Henares (UAH). The program ishosted by the Instituto Franklin, an academicmeeting place for Spaniards and Americans.TCNJ Spain – Spring Semester OnlyRequired pre-requisites:Spanish majors and minors: SPA 203 or210 and SPA 211Others: Mimimum of SPA 103. With thiscourse, students are able to take two Spanishcourses while in Alcalá: SPA 203 and SPA211.Courses in Spanish, Business, Humanities(including Art History), and Social SciencesSTUDY ABROAD GUIDELINESStudy abroad students may take up to five courses abroad. Upon successfulcompletion of the courses (C- or better), all credits will count towardsgraduation. Spanish majors may count up to THREE, 300 level coursestowards their Spanish major. Spanish minors may count up to TWOcourses towards their minor.Unless otherwise specified, overseas courses will be counted in thefollowing ways:-Students who take 200 level courses overseas may receive credit for SPA219, or SPA 241 or SPA 270 as determined by the course content.-Students who take 300 level courses overseas will receive credit for SPA370 IF they have met the pre-requisites cited above for the course theyhave elected. In this case, they will receive credit for SPA 370 under thecategories of literature or culture or linguistics as determined by the coursecontent.
