General Information22007-2008 CatalogGeneral InformationVisionHistoryColumbia State Community College builds pathways to successfor individuals and communities in a changing economic andsocial environment.On June 22, 1965, the State Board of Education approvedColumbia as the site of Tennessee’s first community college. Oncethe Board of Education had approved the location of a college inColumbia, the Maury County Quarterly Court approved a resolutionto purchase the two hundred four-acre Hickman farm and pledged 250,000 to aid in the construction of the college.Core ValuesAt Columbia State Community College, we place high value on accessible college programs and facilities student academic achievement andpersonal development individual relationships with students commitment to community service and leadership excellence in instruction continuing professional development lifelong learning recognition of outstanding achievement effective communication cooperative working relationships a strong work ethic and personal accountability diversityStatement of MissionColumbia State Community College, a Tennessee Board of Regentsinstitution in southern middle Tennessee, is dedicated to providingaccess to collegiate education, promoting lifelong learning andsupporting community development.In fulfilling its mission, Columbia State provides academic, studentand administrative services to promote achievement of educational,professional and personal goals. The College works with otherinstitutions to develop and implement articulation agreements thatfacilitate student transfer. The College supports workforcedevelopment by delivering education and training responsive tobusiness and industry needs.Columbia State provides general transfer and career degrees,technical certificates, developmental studies and continuingeducation opportunities at locations throughout the College’sservice area and Online. The College promotes academicexcellence with emphasis on student learning that buildsknowledge, develops skills and broadens perspectives. In addition,Columbia State initiates partnerships in support of economic andcommunity development and contributes to intellectual, cultural,physical and social advancement in its service area.Columbia State recognizes the merits of employees and supportstheir professional development activities. The College encouragesmutual respect in interactions among employees, students andcommunities it serves, provides services in safe and secureenvironments, and is committed to maintaining a climate thatpromotes diversity and access without regard to race, gender,religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.Columbia State graduated its first class in June 1968. Thesestudents had enrolled in 1966, when the College was temporarilyhoused in the Education Building of the First Baptist Church andother facilities throughout the city. The Columbia campus wasoccupied in 1967. At that time the facilities were comprised of theadministration, gymnasium, library, maintenance, student center,and science buildings.The two-story Frank G. Clement Building was completed in 1969,and the maintenance building was remodeled and enlarged in1970. In 1971, the Jones Student Center was enlarged and anathletic track was built. In February 1972, the new John W. FinneyMemorial Library was completed. In the spring of 1976, the HealthSciences Building was completed. On August 10, 1989, theNatatorium, a mini-olympic indoor swimming pool, was dedicated.The most recent building, the Waymon L. Hickman Building, wascompleted in 2001.In January 1988, Columbia State began offering courses in theYates Vocational Center in Franklin. In 1994, the facility wastransferred to the Tennessee Board of Regents, providing apermanent location for the College’s Williamson County Center.Three additional semi-permanent sites have since been establishedin leased facilities: the Lawrence County Center, opened in 1988; theLewisburg Site, opened in 1996; and the Clifton Site, opened in 1997.Campus LocationsColumbia CampusThe Columbia campus provides access to educational offerings forstudents from Maury County and surrounding areas. It also housesthe president’s office and the administrative offices for academicservices, student services, and financial and administrativeservices. The campus is located at 1665 Hampshire Pike at theintersection of State Highway 412 and Cayce Lane. A person commits the offense of misrepresentation ofacademic credentials who, knowing that the statement is false andwith the intent to secure employment at or admission to aninstitution of higher education in Tennessee, represents, orally or inwriting that such person:1)Has successfully completed the required course work forand has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomasfrom an accredited institution of higher education;Evening Services2)The Columbia campus Student Information Center, located in room151 in the Jones Student Center, provides evening student servicesand information support after 4:15 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on theColumbia campus. Evening services are also available at all of theCollege’s campus locations.Has successfully completed the required course work forand has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomasfrom a particular institution of higher education; or3)Has successfully completed the required course work forand has been awarded one or more degrees or diplomasin a particular field or specialty from an accreditedinstitution of higher education.Limitatons and ReservationsThe institution reserves the right to make changes as required incourse offerings, curricula, academic policies and other rules andregulations affecting students. These changes will govern currentand formerly enrolled students and will become effective wheneverdetermined by the institution. Admission to the College42007-2008 CatalogAdmission to the CollegeColumbia State Community College offers many differentopportunities for education. All individuals are encouraged to attendas either credit or non-credit students.In order to be admitted as a credit student, individuals must meetthe requirements of admission to the category in which they areapplying. These requirements differ depending on the type ofadmission chosen. The requirements reflect the academicbackground and/or basic academic competencies required tosucceed in the various courses and programs.Some specialized programs have specific admission requirementsin addition to the College's general admission requirements.Acceptance to the College does not constitute admission to theseprograms (see "Programs with Special Admission Requirements").Individuals wishing to take non-credit courses do not need to applyfor admission but may enroll directly through the Center forEconomic and Community Development (see “GeneralRequirements for Admission to Non-Credit Courses”).Admission application forms and services are available in theStudent Information Center on the Columbia campus or at theadministrative offices at all of the College’s campus locations.All male students, born in 1960 or later, who have attained the ageof 18, must have proof of draft registration before registering forclasses at Columbia State.Effective July 1, 1998, proof of immunization with two doses ofMeasles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccines administered on orafter the first birthday is required by state law for attendance atColumbia State Community College. All entering students, bornafter 1956, must furnish documented proof of having immunity orhaving been immunized with two doses of MMR vaccine, unlesscontraindicated because of pregnancy, allergy to a vaccinecomponent, or other valid medical reasons.By state law (Tennessee Code Annotated 49-6-5001),immunizations are not required if they "conflict with the parents’ orguardians’ (or individuals over 18) religious tenets and practices,affirmed under penalties of perjury.” A Certificate of Immunizationform, completed and signed by a licensed doctor of medicine orosteopathy, or an official copy of a State Health Department ormilitary immunization form, must be returned to the Admissionsoffice. Students who do not provide the properly completedcertificate prior to registration for their second semester atColumbia State will not be allowed to register until an acceptableform is on file.The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee mandates thateach public or private postsecondary institution in the state provideinformation concerning Hepatitis B infection to all first-time enteringstudents. Tennessee law requires that such students complete andsign a waiver form provided by the College that includes detailedinformation about the disease. All entering first-time students mustcomplete this form and return it to the Admissions office beforethey will be allowed to enroll in classes.General Requirementsfor Admission to Credit StudiesThe Admissions office is the unit responsible for administeringadmission policies of Columbia State Community College. TheAdmissions office coordinates both general and program-specificadmission policies.First-Time ApplicantsTo ensure adequate time for processing applications, the applicantshould submit an application for admission and satisfactoryscholastic credentials by the priority processing applicationdeadline in each semester course schedule for the semester inwhich enrollment is planned. The applicant must include a list of alleducational institutions attended beginning with high school. Ingeneral, admission to the College in credit studies is granted toqualified applicants only after all required documents are receivedby the Admissions office.Former Columbia State StudentsStudents who have previously taken credit courses at ColumbiaState and who return to the College after being absent for onesemester (excluding summer) must file an application forreadmission with the Admissions office.Students who have attended other institutions of higher educationsince last attending Columbia State must have all of theseinstitutions send official transcripts to the Admissions office.Admission Requirementsfor Specific Credit ClassificationsUndergraduate Degree StudentsStudents who have selected a program of study and are pursuing adegree or certificate are classified as undergraduate degreestudents. This classification includes beginning freshmen, transferstudents, and former Columbia State students.Freshmen, Beginning Students are students who enroll in collegefor the first time and are working toward an undergraduate degreeor certificate.1. High School Graduates must meet the academic assessmentrequirements and submit the following:a. a completed application for admission.
