Dental Hygienists provide preventive,therapeutic, restorative, and procedures to control oral diseaseand promote optimal oral health. The Dental Hygiene programincludes instruction in dental anatomy, microbiology, andpathology; dental hygiene theory and techniques; dentalmaterials; radiology; patient education and counseling; and officemanagement and professional standards. Clinical educationexperiences are integrated throughout the curriculum and offerstudents the opportunity to gain competency through practiceeach semester.Upon completion of this program, graduates will be eligible totake the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination (NBDHE),and the regional and or state clinical and local anesthesiaexaminations. Applicants are encouraged to contact the StateBoard of Dentistry in the states in which they wish to practice forindividual licensing requirements.Dental Hygiene is a competitive entry program. Students areadmitted to the program every other year. The prerequisitecourse requirements are open to all students. The AAS degreemay be obtained in a 24-month course of study followingacceptance to the program. Students willlearn to assist the dentist in restorative, fixed and removableprostheses. Included will be an introduction to restorativetechniques with emphasis on posterior tooth anatomy, placementof amalgam restorations, rubber dam isolation, and matrix andwedge placement.
