He was also a State Representative,and later in life president of an insurance company in NewBedford.Several notable events occurred during his lifetime: amusket ball went through one side of his body and out the other; heshook Napoleon's hand; he was captured by the French; and wasrewarded by Lloyd's for navigating a wreck, the "Otis," through agale in 1807.

Records reveal thetwin boys were infants when they crossed the Atlantic aboardwooden ships, probably built in Maine.Robert married JaneMcFederis in Boston in 1738, and the two had a family of sevenchildren.
