Graduate CollegeRebel Research and Mentorship ProgramCongratulations to ourincoming cohort2016-2017

Moinak BhaduriMoinak Bhaduri is a fourth year Ph.D. student inthe Department of Mathematical Sciences, working under the supervision of Dr. ChihHsiang Ho on novel applications of nonparametric statistical methods to problemsemerging from point processes and repairablesystems. Specific interests include developmentof tests to choose simple parsimonious modelsto predict rare events and an understanding ofthe interaction between two related Poisson-typeprocesses. Potential case studies shouldexamine the evolution of a process over timeand could include examples from biology, engineering, weather science, finance, geology, etc.

Sanjana DasSanjana Das is a Ph.D. candidate and Officer atthe Society of Women Engineers, University ofNevada Las Vegas. She is currently workingunder Professor Biswajit Das on an NSF fundedproject for waterless cleaning of solar cells usingnanotechnology. Prior to joining UNLV, Sanjanasuccessfully completed her Masters inNanotechnology from SUNY Albany. She wasalso an intern with Tokyo Electron America R&Dcenter at Albany for more than a year. Prior tocoming to the US, Sanjana worked as an internat National University of Singapore.

Jeff EgglestonJeff Eggleston is a first-year Ph.D. student in theKinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Department, supervised by Dr. Janet Dufek. His researchinterests are examining movementcharacteristics in children and adults withchronic disabilities and working with clinicians todevelop more appropriate rehabilitativeinterventions for specific disabilities. Jeff’spurpose in furthering knowledge within thesepopulations is to improve rehabilitation outcomesand improve individuals’ quality of life.

Mark ElkouzMark Elkouz is going to begin his third year inthe Ph.D. program in the Department of Civil andEnvironmental Engineering and Construction.Mark currently assists in overseeing theAcademic Success Center’s EngineeringTutoring Lab. His advisor is Dr. Jaci Batista. Inthe past, Mark worked on research consideringa method for simulated runoff water treatment. His research is set to focus on contaminantremoval and/or remediation in water treatment, through the biological removal of selenium andchromium from waters.

Janelle EvansJanelle M. Evans graduated summa cum laudefrom Arizona State University, with a bachelor’sdegree in Creative Writing. She is currently ateaching graduate assistant at the University ofNevada Las Vegas (UNLV) while pursuing herMaster of Fine Arts degree in Writing forDramatic Media. In addition to writing novels,Miss Evans is an avid enthusiast of screenplay, and short story writing. She was thrilled to placein the top ten percent of last year’s Austin FilmFestival.

Yulia GavrilovaYulia Gavrilova is a third-year ClinicalPsychology Ph.D. student, supervised by Dr.Brad Donohue. She is Program Coordinator atUNLV's Family Research & Services, whichfocuses on the development and evaluation ofbehavioral interventions to assist performanceoptimization. Yulia’s dissertation research willfocus on the development and controlledevaluation of an interactive online training toolspecific to Family Behavior Therapy, anevidence-based behavioral intervention, to beadopted within community clinical settings.

Candace Suh-LeeCandace Suh-Lee is a third-year Ph.D. studentin the Department of Computer Science, supervised by Dr. Yoohwan kim, with emphasisin cybersecurity in critical infrastructure. Herdissertation research will address the issuesrelated to the data analytics and cybersecurity. In her search for the novel algorithms to solvepersistent data security problems, such asintrusion and malware detection, security riskquantification, human behavior analytics, anddata security in Big Data Analytics, she aims tocontribute to the common goal of creating safeand secure cyber-space for all.

Tim WatersTim Waters is in his last year of a Ph.D. programin the department of Physics & Astronomy, studying astrophysics under Daniel Proga. Hehas a Bachelor’s degree in physics fromOccidental College as well as Master’s degreesin applied mathematics and physics, both fromUNLV. His research is focused onunderstanding the environments of luminoussupermassive black holes. This effort typicallyinvolves performing numerical simulations onUNLV’s supercomputers, Eureka and CherryCreek.
