Anniversary Edition December 2021 9Celebrating65 Yearsof Service to ourCommunityIn 1955 Del Norte and Curry County farmersunited to form a Farmer’s Cooperative. TheCo-Op consisted of Dairy, Beef Cattle, Sheep,Daffodils and Lily Bulb farmers.As the Co-Op entered the 21st century thebuildings needed a makeover. In 2004 a newfeed shed was constructed followed by themain store in 2005.In the spring of 1956 the Co-Op built andopened a modest store aptly named Del-CurSupply Co-Op.Del-Cur Supply remains strong and prosperous,vested in community and serving farmers,ranchers, contractors, and home owners.In the next few years membership grew tonearly 150 members bolstered by the thrivingLily Bulb industry. He grew up in Brookings, alongwith his twin brother and his sister, Roochita Patel. Heattended the University of California San Diego for hisundergraduate studies. He completed his medical education at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) inPortland. He then went on to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to complete his internalmedicine training prior to graduating from his geriatricmedicine fellowship program at University of PittsburghMedical Center in Pennsylvania, one of the top geriatricmedicine programs in the country.In 2016, the fat-freezing CoolSculpting device wasadded to their practice, and the doctors were pleasantlysurprised by the feedback from their patients. Theynoticed there was a gap in options for medical-gradeaesthetics services in the area, so Dr. Palak becametrained and certified in aesthetics procedures includingBotox, fillers, and laser treatments and started offeringthem in the clinic and Chetco Medical and Aestheticswas born. The doctors started seeing increased interestin these types of services over the next two years, sothey decided to invest in having a dedicated space andto expand the range of services available to match thecommunity’s interest.Roochita Patel, sister to Dr. Palak, took a sabbaticalfrom her corporate roles in San Francisco to lead thebuildout and setup of Bellezza, along with Dr. Palak andDr. Jay. She has spent the majority of her career workingin Silicon Valley where she held executive positions inoperations, analytics, and finance at several companiesincluding Walmart.com and Minted, but was very excited to join the team in Brookings to help bring servicesthat typically are only available in larger cities to thetown where she grew up. After Bellezza’s opening,she has been focused on optimizing the clinic operations, expanding the medical practice to help meet theincreasing demand for medical services, and exploringpotential new aesthetics service offerings.
Anniversary Edition December 2021 11Welcome To Curry General HospitalCurry General Hospital is countyowned, authorized by a vote ofpeople in 1949. The hospital wasopened in October 1951, and hasgone through four remodels since.The present remodeling projectadded 12,700 square feet of spacefor a total of 32,000 square feet atThree levels.The hospital has 24 beds including5 obstetrical. In addition to normalservices the hospital is equippedfor inhalation therapy, diathermy,sonar (sound) therapy, and hasheart monitoring equipmentcomplete with electrocardiogramand defibrillator.Oxygen is piped to all rooms anda dietitian oversees the hospitalfood service on a consultingcontract. A total of 48 personsare on the hospital payroll, somepart-time, equivalent to 32 full timeemployees. Four doctors are on thehospital staff.Included in the hospital areemergency treatment room, surgery,post-anesthesia, X-Ray, centralsupply, laundry, kitchen, dining,doctor’s room, locker and storerooms,boiler, generator, air-conditioningand mechanical rooms.There is a 4800 square footlaboratory area, enlarged lobbyand covered loading area.The original cost of the hospital was 144,000 which included 46,000in federal funds.
