Alejo (AD 30)Maria Luisa Covarrubias is the mother ofAssemblymember Luis Alejo and has been acommunity advocate throughout her career.She was a former champion farmworker whobecame a registered nurse, and was a proudunion member of SEIU. She continues tovolunteers with groups like Caminos Del Artein East Salinas and the Watsonville SeniorCenter.

Dr. Sonya ChristianAssemblymember Rudy Salas, Jr.(AD 32)Dr. Sonya Christian in 2013 becamethe 10th President of BakersfieldCollege. Under her leadership theCollege has undergone a renaissancewith booming enrollment, communityexcitement, and student success. Dr.Christian has re-energized the campusand community of BakersfieldCollege, and positioned the College as a state and national leader.Rosalie MastalerAssemblymember Jay Obernolte (AD 33)Rosalie Mastaler co-founded A Penny A Kiss, atribute band to the 1940s. They haveperformed for hundreds of veterans withsongs straight from the USO playlists. Her sonwas injured in a tragic accident, losing his leftfoot. Rosalie now uses this as a platform toadvocate for resources for amputees andveterans.

Diana CisnerosAssemblywoman Shannon L. Grove (AD 34)Diana Cisneros is a Human Trafficking Trainer for theKern Coalition Against Human Trafficking inBakersfield. Starting at the age of seven and into herearly teens, Diana was a victim to the brutal andinhuman world of trafficking. She is passionateabout her faith and believes that God granted herstrength and pushed her towards a healing path.Diana's main goal is to see at-risk youth becomeequipped with the necessary tools to prevent andaddress trafficking in the Central Valley. Diana is also a proud wife and amother of a beautiful little girl.Lorena ChavezAssemblymember Katcho Achadjian (AD 35)Lorena Chavez was born to Luis and Consuelo Chavezon a farm her dad started after he came to the UnitedStates from Jalisco, Mexico with the BraceroProgram. Ms. Chavez stays busy as the Controller andChief Financial Officer of the family business, L&GFarming, which grows strawberries, blueberries, andblackberries. She and her brother Daniel also operatetheir own DL Farms. When not busy attending tofarming, Chavez has been busy making history as thefirst Latina to chair the California Strawberry Commission. In addition, Ms.Chavez serves on the YMCA board in Santa Maria and the Santa Barbara CountyFair Park Board. Chavez is also a mother to two daughters.

Mary ReinaAssemblymember Tom Lackey(AD 36)As a registered nurse for over 30 years,Mary is currently the Director of theForensic Services Unit at the AntelopeValley Hospital. Among her manyaccomplishments, she teaches a forensic nursing course at UC Riverside andadvocates for the prevention of violence in the health care and justice system.Linda KropAssemblymember Das Williams (AD 37)Linda Krop is the Chief Counsel of theEnvironmental Defense Center, a public interestenvironmental law firm serving California’s SouthCentral Coast. Linda has practiced environmentallaw at EDC since 1989 and specializes in casesfocused on the protection of coastal, open space,and natural resources, as well as offshore oil andgas development. Linda teaches EnvironmentalLaw at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Tami EdwardsAssemblymember Scott Wilk (AD 38)Tami was born and raised in the Santa ClaritaValley and devotes much of her time andenergy to her community. She has volunteeredwith community groups such as Circle of Hope,Hart School District Advisory Committee, andthe SCV Chamber of Commerce. Tami and herhusband, Jason, have four children.Dana StangelAssemblywoman Patty López (AD 39)Dana is a wife and mother of three fromSunland. She founded the non-profit TerangaRanch and serves as its Executive Director.She has been actively involved with manyworthy organizations including the WildlifeWaystation, the International MOMS Club andthe Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council.

Heidi MayerAssemblymember Marc Steinorth (AD 40)Heidi Mayer established the YouthHopeFoundation in the City of Redlands. YouthHopeserves the unaccompanied homeless andrunaway youth. It began as a grass-rootsorganization delivering peanut-butter and jellysandwiches, socks, and hygiene items tohomeless youth on the streets of Redlands.Today, YouthHope serves over 900 homelessyouth.Dr. Marilee ScaffAssemblymember Chris R. Holden (AD 41)Marilee Scaff celebrated her 100th birthday last Novemberwhen she received greetings from over 700 Girl Scoutsnationwide recognizing her role as a former Scout Leader.She has been active in the local League of Women Voterswhere she was President 1988-1990 and received theirOrdway Award for “performing outstanding service to thecommunity.” She also dedicated 30 years to volunteeringand organizing the Botanic Garden’s volunteer organizationwhile serving nine years on its Board of Overseers. In theyears leading up to World War II, Dr. Scaff found her callingas an advocate for peace while working as a teacher at aremote mountain village in the Philippines. After hiding in the mountains for two years, shewas captured by Japanese soldiers during a mountain raid. She spent two years in theinternment camps of Santo Thomas and Los Banos. She was rescued by the 101st AirborneDivision, and returned home stateside in May of 1945, settling in Claremont two years later.

Linda EvansAssembly Republican Leader Chad Mayes(AD 42)Mayor Linda Evans is a California native, she hasserved on the La Quinta City Council since 2009and was elected Mayor in 2014. She has workedin the health care industry for 28 years and is theChief Development Officer at JFK MemorialHospital in Indio. Linda is health focused andcommunity driven. She has ignited theengagement of La Quinta residents and has established new energy throughredefining the structure and service delivery of local government.Evan KleimanAssemblymember Mike Gatto (AD 43)Evan Kleiman is a chef, restaurateur, hostof KCRW’s Good Food, and mostimportantly, author of eight Italiancookbooks. Her interests include issues offood policy and agro-ecology. She serveson the Stewardship Council for Roots ofChange and is a member of the Los AngelesFood Policy Council.

Jeri L. WilliamsAssemblywoman Jacqui Irwin (AD 44)Chief Jeri Williams has been in command ofthe Oxnard Police Department since January2011 and is the City’s first female Chief ofPolice. She has been in law enforcement formore than 27 years. In her role as Chief, sheleads 400 employees and oversees a 50million budget.Rebecca Gray GrossmanAssemblymember Matthew Dababneh(AD 45)In 2006, Rebecca Gray Grossman and herhusband, Dr. Peter Grossman, established TheGrossman Burn Foundation, to promoteeffective, sustainable partnership solutions forthe treatment, care, and support of burnsurvivors and their families in the United Statesand around the world. Rebecca currently servesas Chair and has worked extensively in thehealth care field for over a decade as a researcher, journalist and marketingexecutive.

Judy PriceAssemblymember AdrinNazarian (AD 46)Judy Price currently serves on the GreaterValley Glen (Neighborhood) Council (GVGC),and Chairperson of the GovernmentRelations Committee. She is a pastPresident of the GVGC and formerChairperson of the Planning and Land UseCommittee. Judy is the founder and Chairperson of the VGNA’s Adopt-A-FamilyProgram, established in 2001 to help families who are caught in a cycle ofpoverty. Working with the local public schools, the program has served over150 families through donations from Valley Glen residents and businesses.Virginia MarquezAssemblywoman Cheryl R. Brown (AD 47)Virginia Marquez has served as Councilmember forthe City of San Bernardino since March 2010. Shegraduated from California State University, SanBernardino with a degree in Sociology.Councilmember Marquez, a tireless advocate,championed the creation of the city’s ServiceAccess Center for the homeless.

Obdulia HernándezAssemblymember Roger Hernández(AD 48)Obdulia Hernández, mother ofAssemblymember Roger Hernández, hasdedicated her life to her children and to hercommunity. She is kind, loving, and alwaysbrings a smile to everyone’s face. ToAssemblymember Hernández, she is alwaysthe women of the year. This year she is beinghonored with a recognition from his districtand the Assembly.Charlene Lin Chong UngAssemblymember Ed Chau (AD 49)Charlene Ung is an engineering manager atNASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Sheoversees the design, engineering, andmanufacturing of all NASA-JPL spacecraft andinstruments. Ms. Ung also authored, “Nam Moi: AYoung Girl’s Story of Her Family’s Escape fromVietnam,” about her family’s experience asimmigrants in Southern California.

Elaine PolachekAssemblymember Richard Bloom (AD 50)Elaine Polachek is the Assistant City Manager forthe City of Santa Monica. A leader in the city’seconomic development, she spearheaded theredevelopment of the famous Santa MonicaPier from 1984 to 1995. A resident of WestHollywood, she holds a bachelor’s degree fromUCLA and a master’s degree from USC.Lani StappAssemblymember Jimmy Gomez (AD 51)Lani Stapp is a longtime resident of EagleRock and an incredibly active communityleader. She is the current President of EagleRock Women’s Twentieth Century Club andhas been volunteering with the organizationfor the past 16 years. Carol is known for her highstandard of excellence, leadership, andresponsiveness to the civic needs of DowntownLos Angeles and the state of California.

Michelle KingAssemblymember SebastianRidley-Thomas (AD 54)Michelle King is the Superintendent ofSchools of the Los Angeles UnifiedSchool District, the second-largestdistrict in the nation. Jessica CamelliaFrontelaAssemblywoman CristinaGarcia (AD 58)Jessica Frontela is founder anddirector of United Fight, a nonprofit organization dedicated tobuilding and strengthening theunity in families that are battlingPediatric Cancer. Her work began when her 7-year old was diagnosed withstage four cancer last August. Today, Jessica has raised thousands of dollarsand has assisted countless families.Saundra BryantAssemblymember Reginald B.Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (AD 59)Saundra Bryant is the Executive Directorof All Peoples Community Center, aposition she has held since 1985. She hasbeen a part of the center since she wasa two-year old in its daycare program.Her connection to the center hastransformed her into a respected civicleader.

Melanie OliverAssemblymember Eric Linder(AD 60)Melanie Oliver was born and raised inNorco. She attended HighlandElementary School as a student and nowworks there as a teacher, a position shehas held for the past 13 years. Mrs.Oliver’s active participation both insideand outside of the classroom has earnedher multiple awards, including SemiFinalist for the 2016 California Teacher of the Year. Aside from dedicating timeto her young students, she also mentors university students who aspire to oneday become teachers.Barbara E. KerrAssemblymember Jose Medina (AD 61)Barbara E. Kerr began her teaching career withthe Riverside Unified School District. She served inmany capacities with Riverside CTA and theCalifornia Teachers Association. She served asPresident of CTA and was named the third mostpowerful person in Southern California by the LATimes. Barbara serves on the UCR Alumni Boardand is an advocate for the UCR Guardian Scholarsprogram. Riverside CTA created the Barbara E.Kerr Foundation which acknowledges teachersexemplary work.
