letter from the associate deanMission StatementCollege of PharmacyThe mission of the NSU College ofPharmacy is to educate professionalswho will address the pharmacy-relatedneeds of society. v ision statement: Through ourprograms of innovative teaching, service, research, and scholarship,we will achieve the distinction ofbeing a premier college of pharmacy. v alues: Entrepreneurship, excellence, innovation, integrity, professionalism, respect for diversity, service, and teamworkConsistent with the mission statementand strategic plan for NSU, the Collegeof Pharmacy places significant emphasison cutting-edge research. The Ph.D.program in pharmacy is envisioned to bethe vehicle that will foster the unbridleddevelopment of a viable and sustainableresearch program in both the biomedicalsciences and the sociobehavioral andadministrative pharmacy sciences atNSU. It is anticipated that the Ph.D. program will serve as thecatalyst in the creation of a “critical mass” of researchers, such thatthe college will be better poised to successfully compete for myriadresearch grants. The College of Pharmacy at NSU will make a concerted effortto admit a diverse, suitably qualified, and actuated group ofstudents. These students will be guided by a cadre of experiencedfaculty members who are eager and well-equipped to facilitate thetransformation of Ph.D. students into scholars who exhibit anauthentic zeal for the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge.Graduates of this program would have had the opportunity to betutored by faculty members who are nationally and internationallyrecognized for their achievements in their respective disciplines.According to an AACP Task Force on Faculty Workforce, theacademy will need roughly 1,200 new faculty members duringthe next decade. The Task Force also intimated that the shortageof faculty members is occasioned by several factors, includingthe development of new pharmacy programs and facultymember retirements. Additionally, it is well documented thatthe pharmaceutical industry is experiencing a shortage of Ph.D.pharmacy graduates; therefore, this Ph.D. program is timely andunequivocally significant. It is anticipated that it will make asignificant impact on the shortage of Ph.D. pharmacy graduatesin both academia and industry.Hugh M. McLean, Pharm.D., Ph.D.Associate Dean, Research and Graduate EducationHealth Professions Division 7
