Jill Ellis202 2 CO M M E N C E M E N T S PE A K E RJill Ellis, who won back-to-back FIFAWomen’s World Cups as coach of theU.S. Women’s National Team, is the2022 Illinois Commencement speaker.Jill Ellis was the head coach of the nationalsoccer team for five years, from 2014 to 2019.During her tenure, she won two FIFA Women’sWorld Cups (2015, 2019), earned two FIFA WorldCoach of the Year honors and coached 132 USWNTgames—the most of any coach. She has the most winsin U.S. soccer history and is the only person to winback-to-back Women’s World Cups. She left in 2019 witha record of 106-7-19 and is now president of the SanDiego Wave FC. She also serves as an ambassador forthe United States Soccer Federation.Ellis’ first head coaching opportunity came when shewas hired in 1997 to lead the University of Illinoiswomen’s soccer team. Ellis was considering two otherhead coaching offers, but she said her Illinois campusvisit sealed the deal.“Before coming for the interview, I hadn’t been to theuniversity, and I’m not even sure I had been to (thestate of) Illinois,” she said. “But I talked to everyone,I asked a lot of questions and I saw a wonderfulopportunity. Illinois is a massive and sprawlingcampus, but it’s also charming and friendly. Everyonewas so supportive and excited about the program.When I got the offer, I was thrilled.”4After two successful seasons at Illinois, she wasrecruited and hired by UCLA, where she led the teamto eight Final Four appearances and six straight Pac-10championships in 12 seasons. While at UCLA, she alsowon National Coach of the Year honors in 2000 beforebeing hired by U.S. Soccer full-time in 2011.Ellis said it is an honor to return to Illinois after givingher a life-changing coaching opportunity at a young age.“I am so unbelievably honored to be theCommencement speaker,” Ellis said. “I have suchfond memories of my time at the University of Illinoisand it was a time of so many firsts in my coachingjourney. I truly feel Illinois, the players, my staff andthe peers I worked alongside provided me with a solidfoundation on which to grow. I don’t necessarily thinkabout specific matches, but the warmth and energy ofthe campus left an impact on me. You wereamong the world’s leading scientistsdedicated to atmospheric chemistry.You co-authored the first reportpredicting that global emissions ofchlorofluorocarbons could depletestratospheric ozone.Your life was one of the most inspiringprofiles in courage that our nationhas ever produced. You joined thecivil rights movement as a teenager. You were named chairman of theStudent Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in 1963.Your research identified thechemical properties of compoundsthat play an essential role inbreaking down the stratospheric ozone layer. You identified a newclass of chemical reactions that occur on the surface of ice particles,including those present in the atmosphere. You demonstrated a newsequence of catalytic reactions that explain a major cause of ozonedestruction. University Honors Bronze Tablet ScholarsUniversity Honors Bronze Tablet ScholarsThe University Honors designation, the highest academic honor awarded to an undergraduate, is limited to those students who have demonstrated theircapacity for sustained academic excellence of a high order.
