Hope is believing that each of us has a place in God’s good Kingdom. Hope does not want us to be stuck in the suffering & despair that somany experience every single day.Deacon, Jim Stanfordjimstanford15@icloud.comLast week, there was a somber but not surprising article in the local paper that stated suicidesare up 30% among people from just last year. It is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 1524. Among the other terrible causes would include abuse, illness, violence & drug overdose. While a simplistic response is inadequate, I do believe that one of the central truths of our faithis to not only recognize the dignity in each person but to respect and empower that dignity ineach person. Catholicism cannot endorse everything that society does as being from God butwe certainly stand with those who are experiencing a hopelessness that can lead to wanting it tobe over by whatever means they can find. As a people of faith, I believe we can readily understand the depth of despair that can lead to suicide. This empathy is spoken of in the Scripturesas we are to know both light and dark and then choose the light. Our faith communities areintended to be places where we ritualize how the light of Christ overcomes the dark. This is especially crucial for our young people who often don’t have the perspective of a long view thatcan see them through a time of great pain.Director of Administrative ServicesDarlene Hoarddhoard@stbarnabaslou.orgAs a Church, let us ask the Lord to enlighten our understanding of the hardships of this world(and our city) so that we can be a place where God’s hope and courage will uplift all those hurting so deeply.Pastoral Care ChaplainJames Laemmlejlaemmle@stbarnabaslou.orgFr.
