Welcome to Cleveland!Welcome to the 2022 Annual Conference of the Association of Public Health Laboratories,“Where Laboratory Science and Public Health Meet!” As our first-ever hybrid event, weare excited to host attendees participating in person and virtually, and we look forward tolearning a lot together from this experience. We are also excited to be in Cleveland, Ohio, an amazing city with a rich history thatincludes many “firsts” as well! Cleveland was not only the first city to be lit by electricity in1879, but it also was the first to host a rock ‘n’ roll concert in 1952. Cleveland has alsobeen home to many individuals who were first in their fields: Dr. Albert Michelson, thefirst American to win a Nobel Prize in science; Charlie Sifford, the first African Americanto play on the PGA tour; and Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman. Justas Cleveland’s firsts have enabled the city to grow and diversify, we believe APHL and ourmembers will continue to shape and achieve new firsts that will enable us to transformand adapt to an ever-changing public health landscape. The planning committee has put together an exciting program for this year’s conference, which includes the various public health issues of our time, including infectious diseases, environmental health, critical partnerships, health inequities, data exchange, preparednessand response as well as many others. We are excited to announce an informative FiresideChat, featuring an insightful conversation with the amazing Dr. Anne Schuchat, formerprincipal deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We arealso pleased to welcome Dr. Leandro Mena, director of the Division of STD Prevention atCDC, who will present the Dr. Katherine Kelley Distinguished Lecture on “New Approachesand Innovations to Rising STIs and the Role of the Public Health Laboratory.” We hopethe meeting will engage every attendee and allow everyone to experience the energy ofnetworking and sharing public health experiences, expertise and strategies. We also hope that you will make time to visit our Exhibit and Poster Hall to learn about thelatest science and innovation occurring within our public health community. We will againoffer several Innovate! Sessions featuring educational presentations providing a uniqueopportunity to engage with our industry partners. We will also have our exhibitor raffle andscavenger hunt, so be sure to visit them all!For many of us attending in person, this is the first time we have traveled for aprofessional conference since before the pandemic. For some, it may prove challenging. We encourage you to take time for yourself and take care of others over the next fewdays. We are pleased to offer new health and wellness activities during the conference toprovide mindfulness breaks and connect with one another. On behalf of the Program Planning Committee and the APHL Board of Directors, we hopethat you have an inspirational and productive experience and that you explore all of thegreat sessions and interactive experiences that this year’s conference offers. We lookforward to many new “firsts” at this conference and beyond.Daphne Ware, PhDAPHL 2022 Planning Committee Chair & APHL President-ElectDirector, Mississippi Public Health Laboratory
