Calendar of Torah andHaftarah Readings5782 – 57842021 – 2024

Notes:The Calendar of Torah readings follows a triennial cycle whereby in the first year of the cyclethe reading is selected from the first part of the parashah, in the second year from the middle, and in the third year from the last part.Alternative selections are offered each Shabbat: a shorter reading (around twenty verses) anda longer one (around thirty verses). The readings are a guide and congregations may chooseto read more or less from within that part of the parashah. On certain special Shabbatot, aspecial second (or exceptionally, third) scroll reading is read in addition to the week’s portion.Haftarah readings are chosen to parallel key elements in the section of the Torah being readand therefore vary from one year in the triennial cycle to the next. Some of the suggestedhaftarot are from taken from k’tuvim (Writings) rather than n’vi’ivm (Prophets). When this isthe case the appropriate, adapted blessings can be found on page 245 of the RJ siddur,Seder Ha-t’fillot.This calendar follows the Biblical definition of the length of festivals. Outside Israel, Orthodoxcommunities add a second day to some festivals and this means that for a few weeks theirreadings may be out of step with Reform/Liberal communities and all those in Israel. Theanticipatory blessing for the new month and observance of Rosh Chodesh (with hallel and asecond scroll reading) are given for the first day of the Hebrew month. Those who also wishto observe Rosh Chodesh on the thirtieth day of the preceding month (and therefore mayneed to bless the month a week earlier) will accordingly need to include hallel, a second scrollreading (Genesis 1:14-19) and haftarah for Rosh Chodesh. There are some instances where there is a discrepancy in the chapter and verse divisionsbetween Jewish and non-Jewish editions of the Bible. As this calendar follows the Jewishsystem, it is advised that a Jewish edition of the Bible is used for all readings. This calendar is based in form and content on the previous calendars edited byRabbis Jonathan Romain and Reuven Silverman. The readings are also published as part of the calendar on the Reform Judaism website.Queries, comments and corrections should be addressed to me, Rabbi Paul Freedman,c/o Radlett Reform Synagogue, 118 Watling Street, Radlett, Hertfordshire, WD7 7AA orrabbipaul@radlettreform.org.uk.Rabbi Paul FreedmanPublished by:The Movement for Reform JudaismSternberg Centre for Judaism80 East End RoadLondonN3 2SYadmin@rjuk.orgwww.reformjudaism.org.ukCopyright 2021 The Movement for Reform JudaismMay 2021 – Version 1
