Alan RudnickLance Armstrong, theseven-time winner of theTour de France, recentlyadmitted to doping afteryears of denying it. Headmitted using bloodtransfusionsandacocktail of drugs to cheat. Armstrongadmitted to lying as millions tuned in totheir television to watch as Oprah askedthe all the questions we wanted to ask.Shock and anger have been the reactionof choice for the man who founded anorganization to “Live Strong” butcheated. It is hard to admit you are wrong and thatis what Armstrong did. He lied to us,threatened his accusers with lawsuits, and won verdicts of defamation in court. When he admitted to lying and usingdrugs, he sheepishly told Oprah, “I willspend the rest of my life trying to earnback trust and apologize to people.”Will Lance Armstrong’s friends and thepublic ever forgive him?Forgiveness is a messy business becauseit requires us to move beyond hurt andsin to redemption. That is not an easyprocess. For Christians, we know Jesus’1“The Art of Forgiving” Lewis B. Smedes, pg. 38.commands on forgiveness. In Matthewchapter 18, Peter asked Jesus how manytimes he should forgive a brother whosins against him. Jesus replied, “Seventytimes seven.” In other words, Petershould forgive his brother more timesthan his brother deserves. As Christians, we wonder, how do we goabout forgiving other people the wayJesus taught? To answer that question,we must understand the nature offorgiveness. Author Lewis Smedes wroteabout the very nature of forgiveness andhow it needs to be done the right way:It is human to err, yes, but not toforgive; forgiving is divine Forgiving isnot for everybody. It has to be done bythe right person or it will not do thework it was invented to do. Forgivinghas to be done in the right way and forthe right reason and at the right time, and above all by the right person. 1As humans, we struggle with doingforgiveness the right way.Ourforgiveness falls flat because we do notwant to trust that person again who hurtus. Only through a change of our innerspiritual heart and an understanding ofhow to forgive, can we begin to forgivecontinued on next page

PAGE2the right away. We need forgiveness because weneed our marriages to continue, our families tosupport us through tough times, and our friendsto encourage us. Forgiveness is one of the mostredeeming qualities that God gave us.During Lent, I will preach on forgiveness usingBible characters who met forgiveness with bothsuccess and failure. Through my Lenten preachingseries, I hope you will come on Sunday morningswith a willingness to be open to how God calls usto forgive. In addition, I will be leading a LentenBible Study: “Forgiveness: Tough Questions,Straight Answers” based on my sermons. Thesewill be on Wednesday nights, starting on February27. I will lead us in a time of examination ofscripture passages in a deeper way. This will allowparticipants to interact with the sermon and Bibletext in an honest and relaxed environment. It is my prayer that you will journey with me in thisLenten series through the lens of forgiveness. Ifyou are open and honest, God will open yourheart to a new world of reconciliation andredemption.Love and Grace,Alan RudnickASH WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2013Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Wewill commemorate this day with a specialworship service at 7:00 p.m. The goal is toreflect upon our humanness, our need forforgiveness, and our connection to Christ’s lastdays. These themes are symbolized by theimposition of ashes on the forehead, with thewords, “You are dust and to dust you shallreturn.”We invite you to come, see, and experience apowerful time of worship, song, light, darkness, and exploring the spiritual life. A special offeringwill be taken to support the Ballston Area ClergyFund to assist needy families in our community.First Presbyterian Church and the Alliance Churchwill join with us for our Ash Wednesday service.PREACHING SERIES: FINDING FORGIVENESSBrokenrelationships, hurtfeelings, failing marriages, andvengeful friends are all problemswe are faced with. Through thispreaching series, Rev. Alan Rudnick will walkthrough how biblical figures dealt with forgivenessand how we can learn from their successes andmistakes. Wednesday night Bible Study will connect with the preaching series so that participantscan interact with each sermon idea in Bible Study(see below for more information).Feb. 17 - Forgiveness for Us & From GodFeb. 24 - For Better or Worse: 6 Words to RememberMarch 3 - Let Go and Be FreeMarch 10 - Cast No StonesMarch 17 - No Future Without ForgivenessMarch 24 - When All Else Fails Do ThisMarch 31 - Forgiveness ConqueredLENTEN BIBLE STUDYFORGIVENESS: TOUGH QUESTIONS, STRAIGHT ANSWERSWednesdays, 6:00 p.m.Forgiveness is something thatevery Christian knows theymust do, but it is often harderthan Jesus makes it out to be.How can I forgive my brother who ruined my life? How can I love someone who does not think theydid anything wrong? How can I move on after I’vebeen wronged? These are tough questions thatneed answers. This Bible Study, led by Rev.Rudnick, will examine passages from scripture thatwill help uncover answers to the hardest questionson forgiveness. Ifyou can host a dinner, the deacons will assist inany way we can. PAGE8BUCKETS OF GENEROSITYPosted on Vision Trust Blog Site by Ashley HentrichWhile most of us don’t think twice about turningon the tap to get a drink of clean water, manychildren in the developing world do not haveaccess to safe drinking water. For example, at justone of the VisionTrust projects in Guatemala, there are currently fifty childrenwhose families do not have cleanwater available in their homes.Last fall, MarkHopper fromUpstate NewYork decidedthat he couldbe a part ofmaking surethese precious children are protected fromwaterborne illnesses by raising funds to purchasewater purification buckets for their families. Markand I worked together to communicate the needto his church community, First Baptist of BallstonSpa. Their response was incredible! Mark hopedto raise around 600 to provide at least ten waterpurification buckets, but his church communityblew us both away when they raised 3,256!Not only did First Baptist fund all fifty of the waterpurification systems, they also had funds left overto help with other needs at the Learning Center.Next month, fifty children and their families will beable to take the first of many drinks of clean waterin their homes. Thank you to Mark, First Baptist ofBallston Spa and everyone who is part ofVisionTrust that is making stories of generosity likethis one a reality!will receive new water filtration systems thisFebruary in a continuing effort to help the peopleof the village of Las Cruz in Guatemala. Two teams will be going down this year. The firstwill be installing more stoves (which wecontributed 20 of last year) to finish the goal of300 stoves for the village over the past threeyears. They will also be distributing the watersystems we provided this year. The second teamwill be sprinkling the seeds of the gospel throughyouth programs and community outreach. Join usfor “lunch bunch” as we will be hearing back fromsome of the participants in March. Thanks to all who responded to the tug of the HolySpirit by giving generously to the work of thekingdom in Guatemala.I’ve been singing that song “Our God is anAwesome God” a lot lately. He continues toamaze me as to what He does through thefellowship at First Baptist.Perhapsthisissomething you mightwant to consider:becomemoredirectly involved byjoining Susan and meon next year’s mission trip. Start by praying forGod’s blessing and He will direct your path. Planon coming to the lunch bunch to see what God isdoing. Meet the people who plan and direct theprogram and ask the questions you need to knowabout. “Seek and you shall find.”Once again, the response from the congregationfor the “Water Project” was overwhelming andexceeded all expectations. Grose, and published in 1907 by the Ballston Journal.Knowing how involved the Grose family had beenin the church, community and publishing businessfor more than 200 years, I felt sure the bookwould provide interesting information, .butcould a copy be found!A phone call to theBallston Spa Public Library and the response, “letme check” –then “yes, we have one copy” mademy day!! I did find it a fascinating read both as aresident of the area and Church Historian. If you’re interested in the early history of theVillage of Ballston Spa including the Towns ofMilton and Ballston from 1763-1907, check outthe book highlighted above at the BSPL.BTW – The Display Case for exhibits is located onthe left side of the large room across from theChurch Library. The main theme will remain thesame for 2-3 months, but Items displayed maychange more frequently. One reason for that is toremind all of us that the PAST/PRESENT areconnected and HIStory continues to be shared bythose who worship and serve the Lord in andthrough the ministry at FBC.Norma Dunkelbarger
