Studentsin this program may earn a content-based degreeafternoons and evenings while still teaching full time.Taught by professors of mathematics at WPI, the program isdesigned to permit the teachers to learn from professors’research interests and includes an understanding ofcurrent developments in the field. Scholarship aid, whichcovers approximately 40% of the cost of tuition, is availableto qualified participants. The MME degree may be used tosatisfy the Massachusetts Professional Licenserequirements, provided the person holds an Initial License.WPI 2021-22 Catalog

Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators(MMED) ProgramDesigned especially for middle school, high school andcommunity college educators, the Master of Science inMathematics for Educators is a part-time, afternoon andevening program of study that puts emphasis on mathcontent courses while also incorporating core assessmentand evaluation theory coursework and a culminatingproject designed by the participant. Participants areadditionally able to keep up-to-date on the latest researchby working with professors in the field. The MMED maysatisfy Massachusetts requirements to move from an InitialLicense to a Professional License.Master of Science in Physics for Educators(MPED) ProgramDesigned especially for middle school, high school andcommunity college educators, the Master of Science inPhysics for Educators is a part-time, afternoon and eveningprogram of study that puts emphasis on physics contentcourses while also incorporating core assessment andevaluation theory coursework and a culminating projectdesigned by the participant. Participants are additionallyable to keep up-to-date on the latest research by workingwith professors in the field. The MPED may satisfyMassachusetts requirements to move from an InitialLicense to a Professional License.Combined Bachelor/Master’s ProgramIntroductionWPI undergraduates can begin work on a graduate degreeby enrolling in a combined Bachelor’s/Master’s program. This accelerated course of study allows students to obtainan M.S. degree after only five years of full-time work (i.e.,typically one year after completion of the B.S.). Studentsoften obtain the B.S. and M.S. in the same field ordepartment, but with careful planning some studentscomplete the combined B.S./M.S. program in two differentfields. Students are encouraged to review the variousoptions available for pursuing the combined B.S./M.S.program within a specific department or program byvisiting the relevant section within the Graduate Catalog.(Throughout this section, “M.S.” will be used to refer to allMaster’s-level degrees; most students who complete thecombined program obtain the M.S.).Planning Your ProgramBecause B.S./M.S. students use some approved courses tosatisfy the requirements of both degrees simultaneously, itis crucial for them to plan their curriculum early in theirundergraduate career.6The specific course and MQP requirements for a B.S./M.S.program are determined individually, so students shouldconsult with their own advisor as well as the graduatecoordinator in the department in which they plan topursue their M.S. degree early in their Junior year. Thisconsultation, or series of consultations, should produce aslate of approved undergraduate courses that will be usedfor graduate credit. Sometimes the instructors of thesecourses will ask B.S./M.S. students to complete additionalwork, or will otherwise hold them to higher standards ofachievement. Note: no undergraduate credit may becounted toward a graduate business degree.A student’s advisor and graduate coordinator will alsodetermine what role the MQP will play in the B.S./M.S.program. Sometimes the MQP provides a foundation for athesis. In cases where the B.S. and M.S. are not awarded inthe same field, the MQP usually relates to the graduateprogram’s discipline.Once the specific course and MQP requirements have beenestablished, students complete a Course Selection Formwhich is submitted to the relevant department(s) forapproval. This written agreement constitutes the set ofconditions that must be met for a student to complete theB.S./M.S. program. They are a plan for completing therequirements for both degrees and they will not supersedeor otherwise obviate departmental and university-widerequirements for either degree. The completed, signedform must be submitted to the Registrar before the studentmay matriculate in the combined program. How to ApplyStudents almost always apply for admission to the B.S./M.S.program in their Junior year, typically after they haveestablished their curriculum and other programrequirements and completed the Course Selection Formwith their faculty advisors. Applications are submitted tothe Office of Graduate Admissions and are processed withall other graduate applications. Once a decision has beenreached, the Office of Graduate Admissions will notify thestudent, usually within six weeks of receiving theapplication.Program RequirementsOnly registered WPI undergraduates may apply foradmission to the combined B.S./M.S. programs. Studentsare considered undergraduates, no matter what coursesthey have completed, until they have met all of therequirements for the Bachelor’s degree. In order to receivethe B.S. and the M.S., all of the requirements for bothdegrees must be completed.WPI 2021-22 Catalog

In most departments a student may take up to four years ofuninterrupted study to complete the Master’s portion ofthe B.S./M.S. program. There are exceptions, however, sostudents are advised to discuss their timetable with theappropriate advisor or graduate coordinator. Students whostop registering for classes for an extended length of timemay be asked to petition the Committee for GraduateStudies and Research (CGSR) to continue their program.Credit Equivalence and DistributionNo more than 40% of the credit hours required for theMaster’s degree, and which otherwise meet therequirements for each degree, may be used to satisfy therequirements for both degrees. In some departments, students may not double-count more than 30% of theirgraduate credits. Consult the department entries in thegraduate catalog for the requirements of your program.Double-counted courses are recorded on the transcriptusing the credit hours/units and grades appropriate at thegraduate or undergraduate levels. For students in thecombined B.S./M.S. program, approved undergraduatecourses are assigned graduate credit with a conversion rateof 1/3 WPI undergraduate unit 2 graduate credit hours, while graduate courses applied toward the undergraduatedegree are awarded undergraduate units with a conversionrate of 1 graduate credit hour 1/6 undergraduate unit.Interdisciplinary Master’s and DoctoralProgramsWPI encourages interdisciplinary research. Studentsinterested in such options should do so with the assistanceof WPI faculty, as these programs require internalsponsorshipGraduate and Advanced GraduateCertificatesKeeping pace with technological advancement today is anever-ending task. WPI’s innovative graduate certificateprograms help technical and business professionals keepup to date with advances in technologies and businesspractices without a commitment to a graduate degreeprogram. WPI offers two certificate programs: the GraduateCertificate (GC) and the Advanced Certificate (AC).Graduate Certificate ProgramThe Graduate Certificate (GC) provides opportunities forstudents holding undergraduate degrees to continue theirstudy in an advanced area. A bachelor’s degree is thegeneral prerequisite; however, some departments also look7for related background when making admission decisions.GC students are required to complete four to six coursestotaling 12 to 18 credit hours in their area of interest. GCcourses can be applied to a WPI graduate degree if thestudent is subsequently admitted to a degree program inthe same discipline.Additional programs may be developed in consultationwith an academic adviser. For the most current listings go to https://www.wpi.edu/academics/studyAdvanced Certificate ProgramThe Advanced Certificate (AC) provides master’s degreeholders with an opportunity to continue their studies inadvanced topics in the discipline in which they hold theirgraduate degrees or that is closely related to their graduatefields. The AC includes four to six courses totaling 12 to 18credits, none of which were included in the student’s priormaster’s program or in any other certificate program. Each participating department identifies one or moreguideline programs; however, each student’s program ofstudy may be customized with the academic advisor’sapproval to satisfy the student’s unique interests.Additional specializations may be developed inconsultation with an academic advisor.Application ProcessApplication to the GC and AC requires submission of anofficial application form, official transcripts of all collegelevel work, and a 70 application fee (waived for WPIalumni) to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Individualdepartments may require additional information.International students may apply to certificate programs. However, for WPI to issue the I-20 form for a student visa, international students must be registered for a minimum ofnine credits on campus during their first semester andmust complete their program within one year. Studentsapply online at http://grad.wpi.edu/ apply.Admission and MatriculationAdmission to a certificate program is granted by the facultyof the sponsoring department through the GraduateAdmissions Office. A student accepted into a master’s ordoctoral program may apply to a certificate program onlyafter the graduate committee of the degree (M.S. or Ph.D.)granting program or department approves, and as long asall of the following conditions are met:1. Admitted master’s or doctoral program students maybe awarded one certificate for which course creditsWPI 2021-22 Catalog

are used to satisfy requirements for both thegraduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) and the GraduateCertificate or advanced graduate certificate.2. Graduate course credits used to satisfy the graduatecertificate or advanced graduate certificate andgraduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) requirements cannotalso be counted toward a third credential, such as aGraduate Certificate, Advanced Graduate Certificate, graduate or undergraduate degree.3. No more than one-third of course credit applied to aGraduate Certificate or advanced Graduate Certificateor graduate degree can be earned by transfer credit.A Graduate or Advanced Certificate will not be awardedwithout admission into a certificate program.Registration ProceduresGC and AC students register at the same time as other WPIgraduate students, follow the same registrationprocedures, and participate in the same classes.Tuition and FeesTuition and fees for GC and AC students are the same as forall other WPI graduate students.Plan of StudyFollowing admission, certificate students will be assignedan academic advisor. Within the first three months ofadmission, certificate students are required to obtainapproval for their Plan of Study from their faculty advisor. The student, the academic advisor and the department willmaintain copies of the Plan of Study. Students may initiatewritten requests to the advisor to modify the program. Thestudent, the academic advisor and the department mustretain copies of any approved program modification(s).Academic PoliciesAcademic policies regarding acceptable grade pointaverages for certificate students follow the same guidelinesas those established for degree-seeking graduate studentswith the following exception: If a GC or AC student’s gradepoint average falls below 2.5 after completing nine credits,he/she will be withdrawn from the program unless theacademic department intervenes.Program CompletionSatisfactory completion of a GC or AC requires a cumulativegrade point average of 3.00 or better (A 4.0) withindividual course grades of C or better. Upon satisfactorycompletion of the program, students will receive acertificate of Graduate Study or a Certificate of Advanced8Graduate Study in the chosen discipline. Students areresponsible for submitting the signed, completed Plan ofStudy to the Registrar’s Office to receive the certificate.Transferring from a Certificate Program to aGraduateDegree ProgramAdmission to a certificate program is not equivalent toadmission to a degree program. However, many certificatestudents eventually choose to pursue a WPI degreeprogram. Students enrolled in a certificate program whowould like to pursue a master’s or doctorate must meet theapplication and admission requirements for the specificdegree program as described in the Graduate Catalog. AllGC and AC course credits will apply to a WPI graduatedegree provided that the student is admitted to a graduatedegree program and the courses are acceptable to thatdegree program.Earning a Second CertificateA student admitted into a certificate program who wishesto work toward a second certificate program must apply tothat second certificate program for admission. Theapplication fee will be waived for the second application.Courses counted toward one certificate may not counttoward any other certificate.WPI OnlineWPI Online programs are designed with the workingprofessional in mind.
