Havingattempted to translate theForeword myself about 10years prior, and having realized that my translation was agross distortion and a complete injustice to the originalEnglish, I was glad to see thehigh quality work which I hadfound.By István Hargitai, Ohio, USAOn October 21st of this year, Iarrived home from work andwas told by my wife that a parcel was waiting for me. To mysurprise I found three copiesof Az Urantia könyv, the Magyar (Hungarian) translation ofThe Urantia Book, which I ordered some time ago fromUrantia Foundation. Examiningand touching each copy swiftlyturned my surprise to a feelingof overwhelming joy as if I werewitnessing a miracle.I immediately sent an email tothe author, and the message,which I sent in Hungarian,went something like this: “I amglad to see a partial text of theUrantia Revelation for the firsttime in Hungarian. I have beena student of this book fortwenty years, and it would begreat to be able to discuss it inHungarian. If you can find thetime, please write to me.” Inhis reply, Gábor Cseh, theyoung translator, expressedhis special excitement in receiving a letter from a far-offland written in Hungarian. Hementioned, parenthetically,that as a general rule, we Hungarians feel at home in thegrand universe.In his initialExamining and touching eachcopy swiftly turned mysurprise to a feeling ofoverwhelming joy as if I werewitnessing a miracle.As I was paging through thebook with an undisguisableexcitement, all of a sudden mythoughts flashed back to thespring of 2001 when I firstfound an extraordinary rendition of translated parts of thetext of The Urantia Book intoletter, Gábor explained hismotivation in undertaking thetranslation of sections of theUrantia Papers. At that time,he felt he could not undertakethe enormous task of translating the entire text. Therefore,he created an internet“home page” with the hopesof enticing other translatorswith better language skillsand deeper insights to finishthe task. This page also welcomed constructive criticismand cooperation from others.In the absence of an overview or a methodical analysisof the translated sections,Gábor considered it paramount to focus on two majortopics: 1) the portrayal of theteachings of Jesus with theeffort to place the interpretation of the text in its propercontext, and 2) the coordination of certain sections dealing with the Thought Adjuster.As he was translating thestory about the young manwho was afraid, Gábor feltenergized and empoweredby the passage. The followingwords also rang as a personal challenge directed athim: “ learn to feast uponuncertainty, to fatten upondisappointment, to enthuseover apparent defeat, toinvigorate in the presence ofdifficulties, to exhibit indomitable courage in theface of immensity, and toexercise unconquerable faithwhen confronted with thechallenge of theinexplicable.”(291.3)26:5.3.By January 2002, Gáborposted that he had completed Papers 6, 12, 42, 56,57, 104-111, 116, 119, and130. He was working onPaper 112 and would followwith the remainder of Part III,the Foreword, and finally, allthe remaining Papers. Suchan undertaking, according tohis own estimate, would takeat least ten years.Toward the second half ofthis same year, the translationproject came to a halt. Gábordiscontinued the web pagedue to lack of public interestand his own personal commitments. Yet he continuedtranslating sections that hefound extremely relevant andimportant, all the while feelingthat he was not the most qualified person for this undertaking. He would have to wait forthe time when an individualwith a special “calling” andproper skills would step forward and officially commenceworking on an authorized Hungarian Translation Project.I wrote to Gábor and encouraged him to continue onwith the project despite thelack of enthusiasm for a Hungarian translation. This was thetime when he felt he was notthe one called to undertakesuch a monumental task. Icalled his attention to a poemby the great Hungarian poetEndre Ady, who in his “SeedUnderneath the Snow” suggested that there is often adormant period for ideationalthought before new values areembraced by a spirit-hungryreadership. And then I lostcontact with Gábor.As time marched on, I sawHungarian translations posted

Most were marred byimmature and inaccurate comprehension of the original English text; they lacked spiritualinsight. Others were tainted bywhat I call the exalted egoeffect. I would revisit our correspondence and realize howfortunate I was to have beenprivy to Gábor’s train ofthought; deep and probing, yetgraced with humility. I couldnot escape the feeling that asGábor grew in spirit and wisdom, with perseverance, hisprocess of translating TheUrantia Book would be aidedwithencouragement, illumination, and insight from ourministers of the spirit realm.In December 2006, to mygreat astonishment, I receivedan e-mail from Gábor via Steve Caruso of the Ohio Association of Urantia AssociationInternational (UAI), informingme that he had completed theHungarian translation of TheUrantia Book. The email alsohad the text of the encouragement letter that I had sent tohim years prior.In 2008, upon the invitationof Gábor, I was privileged tojoin the translation reviewteam that was originallyformed in 2006. The reviewwas completed in May of2009. Now that the bookwas ready, we needed to findmoney for the printing. Another miracle happened anda South American readerdonated the required funds.To be honest, back in 2001, Inever thought I’d see theFifth Epochal Revelationprinted in my native language.With the book in hand, itproves once again the truth ofthe battle cry of ascendantpilgrims: “In liaison with God,nothing—absolutely nothing—is impossible” (291.3) 26:5.3.E L L I B RO D E U R A N T I A E D I C I Ó N E U RO P E A- T H E S PA N I S H E U RO P E A N E D I T I O Nof the 1993 Spanish translation, but he ceased participating in this effort when he hadsuch divergent opinions fromthe other reviewers. In 1995,Urantia Foundation askedAntonio to revise and correctthe Spanish translation. Hewas assisted by members ofhis study group (consisting of10 to 12 people) and by Seppo Kanerva, who was UrantiaFoundation’s Manager ofTranslations. This revisionretranslation took about sevenyears.By Antonio Moya, SpainAntonio Moya was born in1948 in Seville, Spain. Whenhe was 26 years old, he startedinvestigating phenomena suchas UFOs, Ouija Boards, extraterrestrial contacts, spiritualism, mediumship, revealedbooks, and so on. He found theFrench translation of The Urantia Book at the age of 30, andsince then, his life has neverbeen the same.He participated in reading andcorrecting the first few PapersAntonio believes that TheUrantia Book is very importantto the world. My reason forstarting the translation wasthe crucial importance of thebook’s “super message” forpeople who were looking fortruth, and who were accepting of truth from unconventional sources.In 1993, when the Finnishtranslation was published,Seppo Kanerva encouragedme to translate the book intoSwedish, which is my mothertongue. I had always thoughtthat somebody in Sweden (Iam a Finnish citizen) woulddo the job. But I had recentlyretired from my working ca-Hannu and Eva are experts onthe Swedish language spoken inSweden. It sometimes differsfrom the Swedish language spoken by the Swedish-speakingminority in Finland.Eva’s contribution was invaluable. Her thorough job of editingenhanced the overall quality ofthe translation. Seppo renderedthe Swedish translation intodigital format and worked withUrantia Foundation to make itavailable on the internet.Why do you believe that thetranslation is important for theSwedish-speaking people?Even if English is rapidly becoming the lingua franca all overthe world, understanding thetext of The Urantia Book requires a very good knowledge ofEnglish, which is not possessed by everyone. For mostpeople the size of a 2097 pagebook can be intimidating but lessso in one’s own language.What are your hopes for TheUrantia Book in Swedishspeaking areas?That people will find it! The mainmarket for the Swedish translation will naturally be in Sweden. But there is also a Swedishspeaking minority living mostlyalong the southern and westerncoastlines of Finland. In addition,the Norwegian and Danish people will be able to read the Swedish translation, although theywill certainly want their owntranslations.How has The Urantia Book beenreceived in Nordic countries?I was born in 1931 andgrew up in southern Finlandas part of the Swedishspeaking minority. In 1954 Ireceived an MBA from theSwedish School of Economics in Helsinki. I ammarried to Eeva, who alsohas an MBA, and we live onthe southern coast of Finland west of Helsinki. Threeof our four children liveabroad, and we have sevengrandchildren. In my working career I cultivated somesmall business enterprisesof my own, worked as ateacher of business administration, and served as aprincipal of a commercialcollege in Helsinki.The Urantia Book is rather wellknown in Finland, especiallyamong people seeking truth fromalternative sources. The bookhas been available in Englishsince the early 1970s and inFinnish since 1993. Christianfundamentalists do not toleratethe book, but the LutheranChurch, to which over 80% of thepopulation belong, is not activelydiscrediting it. We had a greatevent in a high school auditorium with music and speeches.Three hundred people whowere curious about the bookattended.The next year, in 1995, I wasinvited to Helsinki by the Finnish Urantia Association, andafter speaking about our preparations for an Estonian translation, the Finns decided tofinancially support our project. Urantia Foundationagreed with our plan, and thework began.We had a professional translator and several assistants.After the first 21 papers, thechief translator tired andbowed out of the project. Wethen found a new translator,Meeli Kuura, who was evenmore skilled with the Englishlanguage than the first one. Wealso had on our team an Estonian language teacher, a longtime editor, and several readers.In 1997 we organized the firstconference for readers of TheUrantia Book in Tallinn, Estonia. Richard Keeler, SeppoKanerva and several FinnishP age 9readers were our guests.The following year we created the Estonian UrantiaAssociation and have hadannual conferencessince then.In autumn of 2000, thetranslation team was convinced that the translationwas ready for printing. It justso happened at this timethat I met a professionaleditor who took a keen interest in the Jesus Papers. Itold her to make a few corrections here and there ifneeded. She soon calledand asked, “Do you knowhow many corrections Ihave made in the first tenpages?” I was astonished!How could she have corrected our “almost perfect”work? But she was right,and we soon found out thather skillful editing wouldmake the translation significantly better.What a disappointment toour readers! They knew thatUrantia Foundation wasready to publish our book.Now we calculated thatthree to four more years ofediting were needed to“perfect” the translation.Our professional editorspent eight years correctingParts III and IV. She thenretired from the project.Luckily we found anotherprofessional tocomplete theediting of PartsI and II.Impatient readers criticizedus for taking solong with ourwork. But myresponse wasalways thesame: The Estonian translation is not onlyfor you but alsofor all Estonians and formany generations of Estonian readers.Estonia is thesmallest nationin the worldwhich has TheUrantia Book inits own language. Thegreat saga, which began 25years ago, finally came to an endthis year on October 1. Urantiaraamat appeared in bookstoresthroughout Estonia. We readersenjoy this new reality of having aprinted book. We no longer relyon photocopies of the first orsecond translation drafts whichwere so difficult to read.only because the Estoniantranslation is now a reality, butalso because we know tea
