This statuesque beauty tellsthe tale. “I was 39 years old andpregnant when severe complications resulted in my being confinedto strict bed rest for months onend.” By strict, Pam means strict.“I could not cook or clean; I had toshower while seated; the only timeI left the house was to visit the doctor. The doctor told me flat out thatthere was a likely possibility that Iwould lose the baby.” Rather thango insane with worry Pam dedicated herself to the birth process withthe same disciplined dedicationthat had propelled her lifelong athletic career. “I decided that if I wasto be put in this awful situation, Iwould embrace it: I maintained adisciplined schedule. I would forcemyself to wake up at the same timeeach morning. I read books, I kepta journal and I used the enforcedidleness to expand my knowledgewww.parrillo.combase. I ate six times a day watchingmy portions and choices of food.I was careful not to overeat. I increased my clean calorie intake (perday) in each trimester by approximately 250 calories. I performedpassive stretching to help with mycirculation and tightness.” Pam wasout of work for eight months. Herenforced inactivity caused muscleatrophy and a complete loss of endurance. “I told myself that once Iovercame this emotional journey,I would compete again.” By theend of the pregnancy she weighed180 pounds and in March of 2010Pam Adams during her five months of bed restwhile pregnant1-800-344-3404Performance Press / June 2012

JOHN PARRILLO’S PERFORMANCE PRESSMy young client Jaredhad just completed hisfirst year of college. Justthinking about my freshman yearbrought back so many memories- many of them quite hazy.I actually transferred out ofUniversity of California atSanta Barbara after that yearbecause no matter what anyone’s major was, the real focusthere seemed to be on partying your ass off every weekend at a mile-long stretch ofstudent-rented beach houseson Del Playa Drive. Halloween in particular was a holocaust of juvenile brain cells,as roughly 100,000 kids fromall around the state descended on the street in a displayof immense debauchery torival any old Rio Carnivalor New Orleans Mardi Gras. Now, I won’t say what I wasinto in those carefree days orwhether or not I inhaled, butI do know that at one point Iwas pointing to a discardedsheet in the middle of theroad and screaming bloodymurder about a dead ghost.Nobody seemed to be gettingout of that particular school in fouryears. The average was five or six.Being a bit more serious about myfuture and eager to start real life asa grown-up, I returned to Boston tocomplete my education.10A BODYBUILDER IS BORN: GenerationsJared, despite being on his collegefootball team, was also a seriousstudent and not interested in getting a head start on liver disease bybinge drinking every weekend. He“Obviously we trainto get bigger.”was majoring in Business Administration and had made the Dean’s listevery semester. Jared had only beenback home for a day, but he hadwanted to catch a workout with meas soon as possible. We were train-June 2012 / Performance Pressing arms, something I had felt tooguilty about designating a specificday for over the years to ever doon their own. This, despite the factthat my arms have been the mostchallenging bodypart on mesince I started training in theearly 1980’s. Doing them after chest or shoulders seemedappropriate, but a whole dayjust for arms? How vain! Howsilly! More like, how could Ihave been such a stubbornmoron all this time and notgiven them their own day especially since I had beenrecommending it to otherswith lagging arms for manyyears?Jared was having a greatworkout, and I remarked onhow impressed I was with thesize he had put on at school.Hard training and tons ofgood food did the trick, asthey always do. Three timesa day he had eaten his fill atthe campus dining commons, and at three other occasionsbetween meals he knockedback a shake with four scoopsof Parrillo 50/50 Plus Powder . He was now a very solid 210pounds. Yet as always, I could tellsomething was on his mind. Afterwe had finished our fourth and finalset of standing EZ-bar curls, I’d hadenough of his nervous brooding.1-800-344-3404www.parrillo.com“Okay, let’s hear it. You want to saysomething,” I said. He didn’t pausefor long.ers pretty much like that? Do theyall have severely distorted body images, a delusional disorder?”“I took a psychology class this lastsemester,” he replied. “I’m afraidthat you have a severe case of muscle dysmorphia, and I have ittoo.”“Oh no!” I cried, clapping myhand to my heart, “I didn’t giveit to you, did I?” That threwhim, but only for an instant.“Do you know what it is?”“All of us? No way. I would not argue for a minute that there aren’tsome bodybuilders who clearly“I do,” I said. “Body Dysmorphic Disorder is when someoneis overly worried or concernedabout a specific part of theirface or body, and many of themturn to cosmetic surgery,” I began. “Muscle dysmorphia is asubtype of that, in which theperson spends unusual amountsof time working out and is obsessive about their muscularity. We meatheads actually have aslang term for it, Bigorexia. Wecall it that because it’s the opposite of anorexia. Anorexicsare never thin enough and areforever trying to get smaller. Bigorexics are never big enough. Theworst cases are guys who really arehuge, but they genuinely look in themirror and see themselves as toosmall still. I knew a couple guyswhen I lived in Los Angeles whowere truly monstrous, yet were soinsecure about their bodies that theywould wear big sweatshirts all yearlong - and it got freaking hot outthere too.”“Well,” Jared said as I clipped ona rope attachment to a high cablepulley so we could start tricepspushdowns, “aren’t all bodybuild-www.parrillo.com“And we should nevercompare ourselves tothe pro’s.”have severe issues and would benefit from therapy. There are guyswho are so obsessed with gettingas huge as possible that they will dothings like eat pounds of red meatevery day and take mega doses ofsteroids and other drugs, far morethan their bodies could even possibly be using. These are often theones you hear about either dying orhaving severe health problems withtheir heart or liver. But percentagewise, I doubt this group makes upmore than two or three percent ofall bodybuilders.”“What about you, Ron?” Jared asked1-800-344-3404after I finished my set and while Iwas flexing my triceps to heightenthe pump. “Not to be rude, but youdon’t think you’re big enough, doyou?” It was somewhat of a personal question, but I felt he deserved anhonest answer.“I’ve never taken things to thatextreme, but I have to confessthat every day of my life I haveto make a conscious effort notto let my mind race about howsmall I think I am,” I told him.“Part of this is the industry Iwork in and the people I am surrounded by - some of the mostmassively developed human beings to ever walk this earth. Tothe average person I know I amfairly large, but that’s not who Icompare myself to. I liken it toa very pretty woman who happens to hang around Supermodels. Compared to those exoticcreatures, few women wouldbe able to measure up to thatstandard of physical perfection.Really, none of us should compare ourselves to anyone elsebecause it’s not healthy.”“Not to be a jerk, but just beingreal,” Jared said. “Do you thinkbodybuilders are mentally healthypeople or not?”“It’s often been said that you have tobe a little crazy to be a bodybuilder,”I conceded. “I mean, think aboutit. We spend untold hours trainingwith weights, eating far more thanthe average person ever would, andtaking a cornucopia of supplements- and in many cases, drugs - all withthe goal of cosmetically altering ourbodies to mold them into ever moremuscular versions.
