Modern AutomotiveTechnologyChapter 11Engine Fundamentals1

Learning Objectiveszzzzz2Identify the major parts of a typical automotiveengine.Describe the four-stroke cycle. Define commonengine terms.Explain the basic function of the major parts of anautomotive engine.Cite and demonstrate safe working practices relatedto engines.Correctly answer ASE certification test questionsthat require knowledge of the basic operation ofpiston engines.

Engine Fundamentals1. The piston stroke is the distance of up anddown movement from TDC to BDC2. The crankshaft harnesses the forceproduced by the downward thrust of thepistons.3. The exhaust stroke removes the burnedgases from the engine and readies thecylinder for a fresh charge of air and fuel.3

Engine Fundamentals4. The valve lifter usually rides on the cam lobesand transfers motion to the rest of the valvetrain.5. The connecting rod fastens the piston to thecrankshaft.6. The flywheel is mounted on the rear of thecrankshaft.7

Engine Fundamentals7. The engine block forms the main body of theengine.8. The compression stroke squeezes the air-fuelmixture to prepare it for combustion.11

Engine Fundamentals9. The intake stroke draws fuel and air into theengine.10. The power stroke burns the air-fuelmixture and pushes the piston down withtremendous force.12

Engine Fundamentalsz Twotiming gears are used to drive thecamshaft– one on the crankshaft and one on the camshaftz Camgear is twice the size of the crank gear– provides a 2:1 reduction13
