Ludlam’s interest in theatre began at an early age and by the timehe was in high school he was performing with the Township Theatre Group and Huntington’scommunity theatre. He received a drama scholarship to Hofstra University, where he receiveda B.A. in Dramatic Literature in 1965. After graduating from college, he went on to join JohnVaccaro’s Play-House of the Ridiculous, but after a falling out with Vaccaro he left and foundedThe Ridiculous Theatrical Company in New York City. Ludlam wrote numerous plays while at TheRidiculous Theatre Company including Big Hotel, Bluebeard, Eunuchs of the Forbidden City and TheMystery of Irma Vep. In addition to his work at The Ridiculous Theatre Company, he conductedmany workshops at prestigious schools such as New York University, Connecticut College forWomen, Yale University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Ludlam won fellowships from theGuggenheim, Rockefeller and Ford Foundations and grants from the National Endowment for theArts and the New York State Council on the Arts. He also won four Obie Awards (Off-BroadwayTheatre Awards), the last one 2 weeks before his death. For his distinguished achievement in thetheater Ludlam received the Rosamund Gilder Award in 1986.Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) was founded in 1913 as the first of the American Actor unions.Equity’s mission is to advance, promote and foster the art of theatre as an essential component of oursociety.
