The Appleton SchoolBTEC SportThe vision and aims of the Physical Education Department at The Appleton School has been influenced by the purpose and aims of theNational Curriculum (DFE, 2013) and the AQA specification we follow at GCSE and the Pearson’s specification we follow for Cambridge NationalSport Science Cambridge National Level 2 and the Level 3 BTEC Sport courses. How is the curriculum being delivered? The BTEC Sport Level 3 Extended Diploma curriculum is divided into 14 units which consist of 58% of the course being internally assessed 10coursework units and 42% of the course being externally assessed over 4 units. Each unit is different and covers a different aspect of the sportsindustry from Sports Business to Skill Acquisition and Sports Coaching. Within year one 2 externally assed units are studied and a 6 internallyassessed units. In year 2 students will sit a further 2 externally assessed units in January and then a further 4 coursework units.Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Equivalent to 3 A levels)Year 1Unit 1 Anatomy and Physiology (Externally Assessed)Unit 2 Fitness Training and programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing (Externally AssessedUnit 3 Professional Development in the Sports IndustryUnit 4 Sports LeadershipUnit 5 Application of Fitness TestingUnit 7 Practical Sports PerformanceUnit 8 Coaching for PerformanceUnit 10 Sports OrganisationYear 2Unit 19 Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity(Externally Assessed)Unit 22 Investigating Business in Sport and the Active LeisureIndustry (Externally Assessed)Unit 9 Research MethodsUnit 23 Skill Acquisition in SportUnit 25 Rules and Regulations and Officiating SportUnit 26 Technical and Tactical Demands of SportLevel 3 Extended Certificate in Sport (Equivalent to 1 A level)The BTEC Sport Level 3 Extended Certificate curriculum is 4 units which consists of 83% of the course being externally assessed and 2 internallyassessed coursework units making up the other 17%. The externally assessed units are delivered in the first year of the course because this4 PageBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020Commented [Sarah Par1]:

The Appleton SchoolBTEC Sportallows students to have a resit option during the 2 nd year of the course. Also, there are heavy links within the subject content to that which iscovered in GCSE PE and Level 2 Cambridge National Sport which can be studied in year 9, 10 and 11 so students can still draw on thisknowledge to help them learn the year 12 content.Year 1Unit 1 Anatomy and Physiology (Externally Assessed)Unit 2 Fitness Training and programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing (Externally AssessedYear 2Unit 3 Professional Development in the Sports IndustryUnit 4 Sports LeadershipHow is the curriculum assessed?Assessments are completed at the end of Learning Aims within the coursework units where the students have developed their understandingof a topic and then are asked to complete assessments based around scenarios specific to the topic that has been covered. The coursework isthen assessed against the mark schemes and students will receive a grade. These grades are then tracked on the BTEC Sport tracker which allteachers have access to. Within the externally assessed units these are delivered in the same way to normal examination units where therewill be end of learning aim topic tests. As well as end of learning aim tests we use mini assessments where students are given specific feedbackon how to improve either their subject knowledge or skills on how to improve answering the questions. At key points within the externallyassessed units we use Mock examinations. These examinations are used to assess and identify any particular areas we need to develop in thebuild up to the full exam. With the way we have planned both of the course’s students will receive 2 additional resit opportunities to improvetheir grade within the externally assessed units. If students are close to a grade boundary within a coursework unit with permission from theLead Internal Verifier, then students are given a resubmission opportunity to improve their grade. How is the curriculum enriched to generate a love of learning? The curriculum is enriched predominately through the use of practical teaching contexts. For example, within units 4 and 8 students areinvolved in real life coaching of younger students at the school. Through taking coaching sessions they develop their knowledge andunderstanding whilst also being assessed. Unit 7, Practical Sports performance requires students to be out of the classroom developing theirsports skills. We do this through planning a series of practical sessions to develop their skills which they are required to use online with theauthorised assignment briefs and the assessment criteria. Unit 22 involves students officiating sports and are often involved in and takeresponsibility for officiating fixtures and extracurricular practices. This can be used as evidence within their assessed pieces of work. Annuallywe have a Quest visitor from the University of Brighton who runs a practical workshop regarding higher education courses. We use guest5 PageBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020

The Appleton SchoolBTEC Sportspeakers to present on various aspects of health and well-being often discussing issues that they have overcome and live with. Key stagestudents are involved in our extensive careers programme to help them determine what their next steps are and how to secure a relevant andworthwhile work experience that is related to their course aims. We have recently also taken students to the University of Kent to use theirstate of the art Sports Science equipment. What skills and knowledge do students bring with them from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5?Students can progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Sport course via two routes the first route is through the GCSE PE subject and the second route isthrough completing a Level 2 Cambridge National Sport Science qualification. Students who progress onto this course will normally arrive witha sound knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology, an understanding of the Components of Fitness and an understanding of Methods of FitnessTesting. What will students study? The Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma is a 2 year course with external examinations/assessments taking place inMay of year 1 and January of year 2 with resit opportunities available in January of year 2 and May of year 2. Alongside this the students willstudy 10 coursework units. The Level 3 Extended Certificate course is also a 2 year course with the externally assessed units being sat in theMay/June of the first year. Then in the second year of the course students will sit the final 2 internally assessed coursework units.Level 3 BTEC Sport Extended Diploma -Year 1Term 1Term 1Unit 5 - Applicationof Fitness TestingUnit 1 Anatomy andPhysiologyUnit 1 Anatomyand PhysiologyUnit 1 Anatomy and PhysiologyUnit 5 - Applicationof Fitness TestingUnit 2 - FitnessTraining andProgramming forHealth, Sport andWell-beingUnit 2 - Fitness Training andProgramming for Health, Sport andWell-beingUnit 4 SportsLeadership6 PageTerm 2Term 2BTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020Term 3Unit 1 Anatomyand Physiology(Revision and ExamPreparation forJanuary Exam)Unit 2 - FitnessTraining andProgramming forHealth, Sport andWell-being(Revision and ExamTerm 3Unit 10 - SportsEvent OrganisationUnit 7 - PracticalSports Performance

Assignment3 Learning Aim Dto be completedby the end of thisacademic term.Half Term 1We have chosen to deliver these units at the beginning of the course because there is a clear link and overlap betweenUnit 4 and Unit 8 so they work well alongside each other. Also, Unit 5 has links to GCSE and Level 2 BTEC Sport which theywould have studied in year 10 and 11 so this would make sense to deliver this whilst they still can recall this knowledgeand this unit links nicely into Unit 2 which will be delivered in Term 2. Unit 3 is taught at the beginning of the course as thisis a mandatory unit and if students were to leave at the end of year 1 they would have had to have completed this to becertificated with any qualification.11 P a g eBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020

The Appleton SchoolBTEC SportHalf Term 2Unit 3 and 8 are completed by the February half term and then the teachers teaching those units collaborate with the Unit1 and Unit 2 teachers to deliver the externally assessed units as these units require more guided learning hours and theseunits have a higher weighting and have to be passed to complete the course.Half Term 3During the 3rd term students will be preparing for the externally assessed exams in early May. During this time there willbe exam preparation lessons and mock exams. Once these exams have been completed we move onto Unit 10 SportsEvent Organisation. This is a good time to deliver this unit as it involves running sports events and the Summer term isexcellent for this as they can help organise and run local schools 'Sports Days' and run summer Rounder’s or Footballtournaments at the end of term. We also deliver Unit 7 during this point to ensure we have completed 8 units in the firstacademic year. This allows for students if they chose not to continue the course to achieve the Extended Certificate andfor the other students means they have 6 units to complete in the next academic year.Half Term 4The second academic year starts with Unit 19 and Unit 22 which are the 2 externally assessed units. By sitting these in theJanuary it allows for a resit option in May if there is any need. Motivation is usually at its highest and this will help gainthe highest grades due to this engagement.Half Term 5In the 2nd term of year 2 we begin the final 4 internally assessed units with a teacher taking each individual unit.12 P a g eBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020

The Appleton SchoolBTEC SportHalf Term 6The final term involves completing Unit 25 and Unit 23. This also allows for any resubmissions for the final internallyassessed units and for the resit option from the Unit 19 and 22.Why 6 units in year 2 and 8 in year 1You will notice within the table above that the students will be expected to complete 8 units in the first year of the courseand 6 in the second. There are a number of reasons for this: The first reason is time, during the second academic year thesubmission for the final BTEC grades is the end of May which effectively means we are losing the final half term to becompleting any coursework. The second reason is that it allows us to incorporate intervention time if any students wish toresit the externally assessed units from the first year or to resit the externally assessed units which are performed inJanuary in May. By the students completing the 8 units within the first year if for any reason the students do not wish tocomplete the second year they are able to leave with a qualification Extended Certificate, equivalent to 1 A Level or if theycomplete 1 more additional unit they can leave with a Diploma which is equivalent to 2 A Levels. Finally, from experiencestudents seem far more focused at the beginning of the first year than in the second so completing more units in the firstyear seems a logical option.13 P a g eBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020

These units have heavy links tothe GCSE to Level 2 content that students would have studied prior to starting this Level 3 course so students can stillaccess their prior knowledge to help with these units. By sitting these exams at the end of the first-year students have theopportunity to resist these exams if required in January or May of the 2nd year. Also, from sitting these exams in the firstyear the aim is to only have coursework-based units to completed in the second year. This is to help relieve student’sstresses and workloads in the later stages of the second year where they will be sitting other A Level option exams. What cross-curricular themes have been identified? The main cross curricular links that are present through are English, Maths, Science, ICT and Food and Nutrition. Writingskills are essential throughout the course to answer exam questions answers and to produce written pieces ofcoursework. Maths skills are to complete calculations and collecting and interpreting data. Science is evident throughoutthe course during the Anatomy and Physiology units. Food and nutrition are required during the examination units. Also,ICT skills are required to produce a number of different pieces of coursework. Throughout the course there is links to14 P a g eBTEC Sport Subject Overview 2020

The Appleton SchoolBTEC Sportcareers this is specifically evident within Unit 3 Professional Development within the Sports Industry and there are genericlinks throughout the course where students work links to sports as a business and health and well-being units link topersonal training and sports coaching careers. How will this be assessed to show students have learnt and remembered what they have been taught?Students are assessed daily during lessons by teachers e.g. Classwork, Targeted Questioning, 5 Question Quizzes and ExitQuestions, submitted coursework, end of topic tests and Mock exams.
