Scripture Focus: Proverbs 6:16-19Materials: Cardstock, laminator (optional), printables of “body parts”, sticky notes(optional)**I use Biblegateway.com so you easily have the Bible references you need. Ichoose a version of the scripture I like, but you can change it to the version youwould rather use, ex. King James. I also like that I can link sections of versestogether. Enjoy!!**Lesson Time: 45 minutesLesson Preparation:Print out the “body part” printables onto cardstock. Cut them out. As you discussthe 7 things God hates, you will build an alien that reflects those traits. You canuse a white board as a background or you could trace a child’s body onto butcherpaper, twice, and then add the parts.If you have older children, write the verses for the godly attributes onto stickynotes, one verse per note. Find those verses on the printables. Number the order.Give out the sticky notes and have those children read the verses when it’s timeto add the next godly trait.**As you go through this lesson, you may find that the younger children needmore clarification for word meanings than is given here. Open up dialogue andhave them role play situations that will help them understand the vocabulary.**Bible Lesson on 7 Things God Hates:{Have the children look up Proverbs 6:16-19.}If the Bible tells us that there is something that God hates, then it is probablyimportant for us to know what that thing is.Read: There are six things which the LORD hates,

So this scripture says that there are six things that the Lord hates. We need toknow what those things are.Read: Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:Oh wait! This verse says there are seven, not six. Does this mean the writermisspoke during the first part of the verse? No. The writer wrote this way so thatwe would pay attention. These days we would say something like, “There are sixthings God doesn’t like .oh wait, no! Seven, which he doesn’t like.” This type ofspeech causes you to listen better to what will be said next. Plus, there is aspecific number.We can count to be sure we have the entire list.{Have the children read their Bibles to come up with the list. If possible, makesure there are multiple versions of the scriptures because the different wordingswill help teach vocabulary.}Read: Haughty eyes, {Put the eyes on the board.}What does haughty mean? [proud] What are some examples of having pride, orbeing proud in an ungodly way? [“I’m the best!”, putting others down, thinkingother people are wrong all the time, etc.]Read: A lying tongue, {Add the mouth and tongue.}What is lying? [not telling the truth; manipulating a situation so people believesomething that isn’t true]Read: And hands that shed innocent blood, {Add the hands.}What does innocent mean? [a person who has done nothing wrong] What doesshed blood mean? [killed] So what does it mean to have hands that shed innocentblood? [this would be a person who has killed someone who did nothing wrong,or did not deserve death]Read: A heart that devises wicked plans, {Add the heart.}

What does devises mean? [to come up with, design, create] God does not like itwhen we plan or create wicked ideas in our hearts. Once we plan it, we willprobably act on it, and do the bad plan. What are some examples of evil, orwicked plans? [Accept answers. Could include such stories as: planning to stealout of mom’s purse, or planning to do something mean to another person.]Read: Feet that run rapidly to evil, {Add the feet.}What does this mean? [Accept answers. Choosing to join in when friends aredoing something wrong instead of walking away; staying in a tempting situationinstead of leaving.]Read: A false witness who utters lies, {Add the cloud.}What is a witness? [Someone who sees something with their own eyes.] What is afalse witness? [Someone who says they saw something with their own eyes whenthey really did not.] God hates it when we claim we saw something, when wereally did not. That’s telling the lie to someone.Think about a court with a judge and jury. Let’s say someone has been accused ofstealing. If a witness was asked a question, and he really did not see what is beingtalked about, but he says he did this could be damaging to the person on trialand she could end up in jail.When Jesus was on trial, there were some people who spoke as witnesses. TheBible calls them false witnesses because they claimed things about Jesus thatwere not true.God hates that.Read: And one who spreads strife among brothers. {Add the arrow across thetop.}What is strife? [A very angry, violent disagreement] Who would be our brothers?[family, or the church] Proverbs was written during the time of the OldTestament, so the church did not exist yet. The writer may have been referring tothe members of the nation of Israel because, if you think about it, they are all

distantly related to each other. Therefore, the Jews, or Israelites, would haveconsidered each other as “brothers”.Causing strife among brothers means causing a terrible fight, or disagreement, inthe family or community.Review: Have children list the 7 things God hates. As you review, draw a bodyaround the parts turning everything into an alien, or funny looking person.If these are the 7 things God hates, then we should choose to NOT DO thosethings. Instead, choose to do things that DO PLEASE God.{If you choose to, have students look up the verses and read them aloud.}1. Instead of haughty eyes, we should look directly forward and look to Jesus.{On the other side of the board, place the blue eyes.}2. Instead of lying tongues, we should always have praise to God on ourtongues. {Add the red smile.}3. Instead of hands that shed innocent blood, we need to have hard workinghands that do honest work so that we can make money to then share withthose who might be in need. {Add the purple hands.}4. Instead of a heart that plans wicked schemes, we are to have a heart ofcompassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness. {Addthe red heart.}5. Instead of feet that run to evil, we are to have feet focused on God’s paththat is lit by reading God’s word. {Add the yellow feet.}6. Instead of being a false witness, we are to be a truthful witness. Always tellthe truth. Telling the truth can save a person’s life. Telling a person thetruth about sin and the gospel can save a life from eternal hell and death.{Add the blue cloud.}7. Instead of causing strife among brothers, we should strive for peace witheveryone. Do not argue with people if you can help it. If you wrongsomeone, ask for forgiveness and make the relationship right. If you try tofix the relationship and the other person refuses to forgive, then that is not

your problem. Pray that he will change his heart, and know that you didyour best to be at peace. {Add the orange arrow.}{Draw the alien/person body around these parts.}***My aliens were black and white, but you have colored body parts!!***What can we learn from Proverbs 6 and our aliens? If we want to begodly, then we must choose to stay away from the attitudes andbehaviors that God hates and put on those that please God.
