ASSEMBLIES OF GOD DISCIPLESHIPThe AG Seven Dimensionsand OutcomesA Spirit-empowered disciple is a lifelong follower of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the One whodisciples us. He forms the character of Christ inbelievers and helps disciples reproduce themselves by leading others in that same characterformation process. All Spirit-empowered disciples are called to dimensions that identify us asdisciples, deepen our relationship with Jesus, and strengthen our effectiveness in makingdisciples. The word used in the New Testament for disciple means learner or follower. Jesus’ methodof making disciples differed radically from theculture of His time: Greek culture depositedinformation and expected people to change. ButJesus, true to the Hebrew method of the rabbis, lived life with His disciples, teaching them byexample. This is our model: living like Christ incommunity as He forms us into Spirit-led, lifelong learners and followers.Discipleship is a call to be and a call to do.In the Gospels, when people asked Jesus whatGod expected of them, He answered several timeswith words from Deuteronomy and Leviticus:“‘You must love the Lord your God with all yourheart, all your soul, all your strength, and all yourmind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’”(Luke 10:27, NLT; cf. Leviticus 19:18; Deuteronomy6:5; Matthew 22:38–39; Mark 12:29–31). This isfirst a call to be: disciples are lovers of God.When disciples are in right relationship withGod, they are able to do—to act in love towardtheir neighbors. The greatest act of love is toreproduce followers of Jesus through fulfillingthe Great Commission. Jesus’ final commandwas, “Therefore, go and make disciples of allthe nations, baptizing them in the name of theFather and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teachthese new disciples to obey all the commands Ihave given you” (Matthew 28:19–20, NLT).The call to Spirit-empowered discipleshipis fostered by dimensions of living, includingparticular practices, that identify us as disciples, deepen our relationship with Jesus, andstrengthen our effectiveness in making moredisciples. These dimensions are the fruit of theHoly Spirit’s work and are lifelong habits—ways ofliving that connect us with our God-given commission—demonstrated throughout the Old andNew Testaments. These biblical dimensions ofdiscipleship include engaging with God’s Word, hearing, and following the promptings of theSpirit, praying, worshipping, being on mission, being generous, and serving.Disciples don’t progress by leaving one dimension behind to embrace another, but rather theyengage with all dimensions, outcomes, and practices at every stage of life on a holistic journeyof discipleship. These outcomes apply to alldisciples, from new believers to those who havewalked with Jesus for a lifetime. The goal is continually becoming morelike Jesus and to live out God’s purposes forhumanity, as framed in our four reasons forthe Assemblies of God: to seek and save thelost (evangelism), to worship God in spirit andin truth (worship), to build a body of believersin the image of His Son (discipleship), and todemonstrate His love and compassion for all theworld (compassion). This document sets forth a framework ofSpirit-empowered discipleship dimensions, outcomes, and practices that are adaptableaccording to the culture and needs of any churchand any discipleship strategy. All seven are givena brief explanation and biblical rooting, as wellas an appendix for what the practices look likein every age group. Most importantly, this document was prayerfully crafted with the intentionthat each church would allow the Holy Spirit topersonalize the discipleship process for everyindividual involved.4
