LONGMAN COMMUNICATION 30001Longman Communication 3000The Longman Communication 3000 is a list ofthe 3000 most frequent words in both spokenand written English, based on statisticalanalysis of the 390 million words containedin the Longman Corpus Network – a group ofcorpuses or databases of authentic Englishlanguage. The Longman Communication 3000represents the core of the English language andshows students of English which words are themost important for them to learn and studyin order to communicate effectively in bothspeech and writing.Analysis of the Longman Corpus Networkshows that these 3000 most frequent wordsin spoken and written English account for86% of the language. This means that byknowing this list of words, a learner of Englishis in a position to understand 86% or more ofwhat he or she reads. Of course, “knowing”a word involves more than simply being ableto recognise it and know a main meaning ofit. Many of the most frequent words havea range of different meanings, a variety ofdifferent grammatical patterns, and numeroussignificant collocations. Nonetheless, a basicunderstanding of the Longman Communication3000 is a very powerful tool and will helpstudents develop good comprehension andcommunication skills in English.‘This [frequency] information is gold dust forthe language learner. LDOCE shows in graphicand immediate form which words are reallyworth learning and knowing how to use.’Jeremy Harmer, ELT authorTo ensure that users have access to theappropriate information, the LongmanDictionary of Contemporary English marks allthe words that are in the LongmanCommunication 3000 in red accompanied byspecial symbols: W1 , W2 , and W3 for words thatare in the top 1000, 2000 and 3000 mostfrequent words in written English, and S1 , S2and S3 for the top 1000, 2000 and 3000 mostfrequent words in spoken English. Nowadays, many learner’s dictionaries include informationabout the most frequent words in English, butLongman dictionaries are the only ones tohighlight the differences between spoken andwritten frequency. These frequency markers added to theheadwords in the dictionary give users accessto a wealth of information that can help theselection of the appropriate word or phrase ina variety of situations. Not only are the wordsand meanings given descriptive labels, forexample formal or informal, AmE (AmericanEnglish) or BrE (British English), humorous,old-fashioned, but now they have the addedinformation about relative frequency in spokenand written language.Take for example the verb book (in the meaningof book a table at a restaurant). It is markedas S2 – one of the top 2000 words of spokenEnglish. Note that is has no marker for writtenEnglish because according to corpus analysis,it is not part of the top 3000 most frequentwords in written English. However, the entryalso indicates that a synonym for book is reservewhich is in the top 3000 most frequent wordsin written English. The conclusion to be drawnfrom this is that in speaking (for instance whenphoning a hotel or restaurant), book is the mostappropriate verb to use when asking for a roomor table to be kept for you. In writing, however,it would be more appropriate to use reserve.‘There are two distinct modes of English:thoughtful, accurate and more formal, reflectedmostly by written English; and spontaneous,real-time, less formal language, typified byspontaneous speech and some informal writing.’Professor Geoffrey Leech,Emeritus Professor of English Languageand Linguistics – University of LancasterLearning a language can be exciting, butalso sometimes difficult and frustratingbecause there are so many things to learnand it is difficult to know what to focus on.The frequency markers that identify theLongman Communication 3000 help studentssee clearly which words are frequent in writtenand spoken English, and enable them to focusmore attention on mastering the meanings, grammatical patterns and collocations ofthese words.
