WELCOMEEileen L. StrempelInaugural Dean, The UCLA Herb Alpert School of MusicGreetings,As Inaugural Dean of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, it is my pleasure toshare our strategic plan that will guide our school’s evolution and growth in theyears ahead. Clearly, this is a uniquely challenging time for music and for highereducation. An unforeseen convergence of events has called upon us to considerways in which our work as musicians, scholars and educators may guide ourstudents toward a more just and sustainable future as we navigate this period ofaccelerated transformation. This blueprint of our shared future is the culmination of months of thoughtfulwork by our dedicated strategic planning teams who closely examinedour curricula, student support infrastructure, instructional facilities andour commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, among other importantconsiderations. In developing this important analysis, we have identifiedopportunities for rapid innovation that provide hope, fostering a brighter futurewhere music re-claims its integral and essential place.Together, we will build from this current moment and emerge as innovators inour approaches towards the creation of music and scholarship. We will continueto foster and nurture voices that showcase the diversity of Los Angeles, withintentionality around our anti-racism efforts. We seek to embody and build uponthe platonic ideals central to our institution’s founding, as we inexorably and noblyseek to intertwine excellence, access and student success.I eagerly anticipate the School of Music’s next phase of growth and lookforward to working with our faculty, students and staff to build upon our strongfoundation. May we continue collectively forward in the spirit of collaboration aswe create beautiful music and celebrate the strength of our musical community. With Appreciation and Gratitude,Eileen L. StrempelInaugural Dean

MISSION, VISION & VALUESMISSIONEsteeming all musical traditions as vitalcultural expressions of our evolving globalsociety, The UCLA Herb Alpert School ofMusic cultivates models for musical studiesthat integrate exemplary scholarship andpractices, and engage through music withdiverse communities on campus, throughoutLos Angeles, and beyond.VISIONWe envision a school of music thatwelcomes students from all backgrounds, provides individual mentorship, ensures theirwell-being, and prepares them to flourish inan evolving musical landscape.

MISSION, VISION & VALUESSCHOOL OFMUSIC VALUESVOICEThrough our voices we expressour thoughts, passions, andstories in the most immediateway. Voice has come to representthat expressive capacity moregenerally; we voice ourselvesthrough musical performance, composition, scholarship, and teaching, and strive inour teaching to cultivate theindividual voice of each student.COUNTERPOINTIndividual voices have thegreatest impact when theyengage others in dialogue, discussion, and debate—in aword, counterpoint—wherebythey establish the basis formusical and intellectualcommunities capable ofactivating the generative powerof diversity.RESONANCEResonance provides the spacefor harmony and rhythm tomagnify the impact of theindividual. Resonance startswith people listening to eachother as the first step towardcommunity, which enables themto engage the world beyondmore powerfully.VIRTUOSITYBy cultivating voice, counterpoint, and resonance,we allow virtuosity—in its dualsense of virtue and skill—toflourish, with each performer, composer, scholar, and educatorstriving for the highest level ofethical excellence, responsiblestewardship, and commitment.

STRENGTHSSWOT ANALYSIS

WEAKNESSESSWOT ANALYSISWEAKNESSES0102COLLABORATIONACROSS THESCHOOLWe need to draw further upon the unique components of allour departments and programs in order to provide inclusiveexposure to diverse styles, music world genres and disciplinaryand interdisciplinary approaches to music scholarship andmusic-making, both within the school and across the universityas a whole.STUDENTRECRUITMENTWe should strive to enhance our scholarship packages whilecontinuing to foster a progressive admission process thatfacilitates the successful recruitment of diverse, accomplishedstudents that choose us—and our research-institutionalcontext—over our competitors.0

WEAKNESSESSWOT ANALYSIS03PHYSICALPLANTWe must continue to renovate and enhance ourclassrooms, performance and practice spaces andthe facilities dedicated to our instrument collections, which are insufficient to teach our core curriculumand do not provide necessary room for innovationand broader outreach into the university as a whole. We also need to focus on creating common areasthat facilitate community building among faculty, staff and students.

WEAKNESSESSWOT ANALYSIS04STAFFING05SCHOOLCULTUREOur streamlined staff size along with recent turnovercreates challenges in managing workflows. As a new school, we have yet to create anintentional culture that embraces our existingdiversity and provides a framework for buildingequity, new traditions and collaboration.0

WEAKNESSESSWOT ANALYSIS06DIVERSITYCHALLENGESIN OURCURRICULUMOur curriculum must be a synergistic nationalleader that represents all voices in a mannerthat both acknowledges the conservatorymodel’s rootedness in a white, male-dominatedEuropean culture and draws upon the wealth ofdiverse world music traditions to forge a boldfuture that encourages and facilitates inclusive, interdisciplinary study in each department andacross the school.

OPPORTUNITIESSWOT MUNITYENGAGEMENTRestore a required upper-division school-wide course and offermore programming in which faculty and students interact andlearn from each other in ways that leverage our school's distinctmultidisciplinary focus.Continue to build deep, mutually beneficial relationships withpeople and institutions throughout Los Angeles to better serveand engage the various communities of our diverse city andstate, honoring and participating actively in our shared musicaland cultural history, present and future.0

OPPORTUNITIESSWOT ANALYSIS03ALUMNI/AERELATIONSHIPSConnect our students and alumni/ae for mentoring, support and job opportunities. The Inaugural Alumni Board is a passionate group ofSchool of Music graduates representing a variety ofmusical disciplines and professions. Through engagingevents, programming and special initiatives, the boardconnects our alumni/ae community to each other andcreates opportunities for current students to networkwith and learn from established alumni/ae working inthe music industry, as performers and in academia.

OPPORTUNITIESSWOT ANALYSIS04INNOVATEST21 -CENTURYMUSICPLATFORMSPrepare our students to be 21st-century musicianswho embrace every facet of the new digitallandscape of music, performance and research. We must be a leader in developing a contemporarymusical toolset and implement the coursework andopportunities our students require to adapt to thechanging future of music making.0

OPPORTUNITIESSWOT ANALYSIS05MUSICINDUSTRYPATHWAYSCelebrate the benefactors that make the schoolpossible by deepening curricular offeringsconnected to the Los Angeles music industry forboth majors and non-majors.Comprising a diverse array of music industryleaders and experts, the School of Music’s InauguralBoard of Advisors has been formed to partner withInaugural Dean Eileen Strempel to bring forth a21st-century music industry program and embraceUCLA’s unique proximity to the global musicindustry.

THREATSSWOT ANALYSISTHREATS010203COMPETITIVELANDSCAPE FORSTUDENTRECRUITMENTMany competitors have better scholarship/fellowshipopportunities, and with our high-cost location, we don’t alwayssecure our top-choice recruits.PERCEPTIONOF UCLAThere is a perception of UCLA as an elitist institution withinsufficient diversity and a perception of the UC system ashostile to black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) andother underrepresented and marginalized communities.COVID-19The coronavirus presents dramatic and existentialchallenges to our traditional pedagogical approaches, performance opportunities and budget at a time whenthe need for music and human understanding to heal ourworld becomes more essential than ever.0

THREATSSWOT ANALYSIS04STUDENTAFFORDABILITYThe increased cost of a college education createsbarriers for the recruitment and graduationof low-income, first generation, traditionallyunderrepresented and transfer students.
