JanuaryThe LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a Stronghold in times of trouble. Those whoknow Your name will trust in You, for You, LORD, have never forsaken those who seekYou. Psalm 9:9-10Sunday 5th January 2020. Ps.71:1-8.Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God C.ten Boom Our theme for this year is TrustingGod. Our Prayer for this year encourages us to trust God and our Memory Verses alsoencourage us to trust God. Actually, we cannot please God without trusting Him (which is whatfaith is): And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe thathe exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.Heb.11:6 This verse defines faith as believing thefact of God’s existence and believing that God rewards us when we seek Him—he cares enoughto respond to those who seek him.TM We find it easy to trust God on Sundays when we are all togetherbut we must learn to trust God every day of every week and especially when we are by ourselves. And it is by trusting God (faith) that we are saved from our sins—together with acknowledgingthat Jesus is Lord: So now everyone who believes can be right with God “The word is near you. It's inyour mouth and in your heart.” That means the word we are preaching. You must put your faith in it. Say withyour mouth, “Jesus is Lord.” Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Then you will be saved. With your heart you believe and are made right with God. With your mouth you say that Jesus is Lord. Andso you are saved. Scripture says, “The one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”Rom.10:4-11 So faithmust be active and audible—if we don’t talk to God and about God, then we won’t really trustHim: It is written, “I believed, and so I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe. And wealso speak. We know that God raised the Lord Jesus from the dead. And he will also raise us up with Jesus. He will bring us with you to God in heaven.2Cor.4:13-14Trusting God is not dependant on receiving what we wanted or hoped for. God is not a spiritual“Father Christmas” who comes to give us presents—but He is our spiritual Father who givesus eternal life. The OT saints were commended for their faith, even though many of them neverreceived the physical promises from God and none of them received the spiritual promise ofGod. The spiritual promise of God they were waiting for was of the removal of the guilt oftheir sins because they were waiting for Jesus to come—to be born, to live, to die for our sins,to rise again for our justification, and to ascend to the Father to send the Holy Spirit. These wereall commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned somethingbetter for us. So they would only be made perfect together with us.Heb.11:39Although life is unpredictable, God is never unpredictable. We know that God is good: You aregood and what you do is good;Ps.119:68 And we also know that God is with us: The virgin will conceive andgive birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel (which means “God with us”).Matt.1:20-23 On that day youwill realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Jn.14:20 Be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”Heb.13:5 And life is never quite whatit seems—nothing happens by chance (even if it looks like it does) because God is in charge—which is what “Jesus is Lord” really means. There is a spiritual dimension to life that is unseenyet very real and the God of miracles is in control: You are the God who performs miracles; you displayyour power among the peoples.Ps.77:14 I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. Job.2:2God is Omnipresent (all present): Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. Ps.139:7-8 Omniscient(all knowing): LORD, you know me and see me. You test my thoughts about you.Jer.12:3 Now we can see thatyou know all things. This makes us believe that you came from God.Jn.16:30 Omnipotent (all powerful): Iam the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?Jer.32:27 Omnibenevolent (perfectlygood and all love): You are good, and what you do is good.Ps.119:68 And God’s thoughts and ways are

bigger than our thoughts and ways! My thoughts are not like your thoughts. And your ways are not likemy ways. The heavens are higher than the earth. And my ways are higher than your ways. My thoughts arehigher than your thoughts.Is.55:8-9Whether life is comfortable and easy or tough or difficult, we must trust God if we are goingto please god and live in peace. When remember God’s greatness and declare His goodness, wewill rise above our doubts and unbelief. Here's something else I've seen on this earth. Races aren't alwayswon by those who run fast. Battles aren't always won by those who are strong. Wise people don't always haveplenty of food. Clever people aren't always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren't always favoured. Godcontrols the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out. A man doesn't know when trouble willcome to him. Fish are caught in nets. Birds are taken in traps. And people are trapped by hard times that comewhen they don't expect them.Eccl.9:11-12 True faith is never disappointed because our trust is in God—not in what He does! Because God is Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent andOmnibenevolent we can trust Him to look after us. If we get angry with God or blame Himfor our troubles, it is a vote of no confidence in God and it shows how little we trust Him!To trust is to surrender—and this often shown by raising our hands. The Bible says that weshould raise our hands to God: I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up myhands.Ps.63:4 But there are two ways of raising our hands—to receive or reject; in praise or inrebellion. One of the Hebrew words for “praise” or “thanks” is “Judah” which literally means “tostretch out your hand in submission”: Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God!For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention.Ps.42:5 The another way of raising yourhand is to shake your fist, as in anger or rebellion: The LORD has spoken, “I raised my children andhelped them grow, but they have rebelled against me.Is.1:2 Both types of raising hands can look similarbut are the exact opposite of each other. There is a righteous anger—against sin, such as Jesus’anger against religious hypocrisy: He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at theirstubborn hearts.Matt.3:5 But if we get angry at God we show that we don’t understand anything abouttrusting God. If we are to be judged for being angry with our brother, how much more so, ifwe are angry with God! Anyone who is angry with his brother will be judged But anyone who says, ‘Youfool!’ will be in danger of the fire in hell. Matt.5:22 Job had learned to trust God even when he did notunderstand what was happening—but the Bible clearly implies that had Job been angry withGod, he would have sinned: The LORD gave m what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praisethe name of the LORD!" In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God. Job.1:21-22 We take the good days fromGod—why not also the bad days?” Not once through all this did Job sin. He said nothing against God.Job.2:10We must make every effort to keep our faith strong and vibrant because faith is the only thingthat will really counts: If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all. Is.7:9 These nextScripture verses on trusting God speak for themselves: Some trust in chariots and some in horses, butwe trust in the name of the LORD our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and standfirm.Ps.20:7-8 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdenedagain by a yoke of slavery.Gal.5:1 No matter what happens, live in a way that brings honour to the good newsabout Christ. Then I will know that you stand firm with one purpose. Phil.1:27 The sting of death is sin. And thepower of sin is the law. But let us give thanks to God! He wins the battle for us because of what our Lord JesusChrist has done. My dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Don't let anything move you. Always give yourselvescompletely to the work of the Lord. Because you belong to the Lord, you know that your work is notworthless.1Cor.15:56-58 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything inlove.1Cor.16:13-14 But it is not just our faith that counts—it is also God’s faithfulness! If we were leftto our own devises, we would all fail—but it is God who makes us stand. And we will stand—if we don’t give up. This is what Church is about—working together so we stand firm in yourown faith: God has made a great many promises. They are all “Yes” because of what Christ has done. Sothrough Christ we say “Amen.” We want God to receive glory. He makes both us and you stand firm becausewe belong to Christ. He anointed us. He put his Spirit in our hearts and marked us as his own. We can now

be sure that he will give us everything he promised us Your faith is not under our control. You stand firm inyour own faith. But we work together with you for your joy.2Cor.1:20-24So this year, let’s determine to put our trust in God and build ourselves up in the holy faith—and we will stand firm to the end! Finally, let the Lord make you strong. Depend on his mighty power Evil days will come. But you will be able to stand up to anything. And after you have done everything you can,you will still be standing. So stand firm.Eph.6:10-14Sunday 12th January 2020. Ps.71:14-19. Lk.8:1-25Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear Therefore consider carefully how youlisten.Lk.8:8;18We have all spoken to someone who heard our audible words but didn’t hear what we actuallysaid—usually because they weren’t paying attention or were not really interested. That is thesame with many people when they hear the Bible read—which is why Jesus said that we shouldconsider carefully how we listen.Lk.8:18 Whilst the actual words of Scripture are easily heard with ourphysical ears and understood with our natural mind, there is a spiritual dimension to the Biblethat needs spiritual ears to hear and a spiritual mind to understand: They look, but they don't reallysee. They listen, but they don't really hear or understand But blessed are your eyes because they see. Andblessed are your ears because they hear. What I'm about to tell you is true. Many prophets and godly peoplewanted to see what you see. But they didn't see it. They wanted to hear what you hear. But they didn't hearit.Matt.13:13-17There are various ways through which God can communicate with us—through Creation, circumstances, conscience and even calamities: From the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly observed in what he made. As a result, people have noexcuse. They knew God but did not praise and thank him for being God. Instead, their thoughts were pointless, and their misguided minds were plunged into darkness. While claiming to be wise, they became fools. Rom.1:20-22Why do you claim that God never answers any of our questions? He speaks in one way and then another. Wemight not even realize it. He might speak in a dream or in a vision at night. That's when people are soundasleep in their beds. He might speak in their ears. His warnings might terrify them. He warns men in order toturn them away from sinning. He wants to keep them from being proud. He wants to stop them from going downinto the grave. He doesn't want them to be killed with swords.Job.32:13-18 But God speaks to us primarilythrough His Son, Jesus Christ: In the past, God spoke to our people through the prophets. He spoke atmany times. He spoke in different ways. But in these last days, he has spoken to us through his Son. He is theone whom God appointed to receive all things. God made everything through him. The Son is the gleamingbrightness of God's glory. He is the exact likeness of God's being. He uses his powerful word to hold all thingstogether. He provided the way for people to be made pure from sin.Heb.1:1-3 Jesus speaks to us through theHoly Spirit: Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.Rev.3:22 But God has shownit to us through his Spirit. The Spirit understands all things. He understands even the deep things of God. Whocan know the thoughts of another person? Only a person's own spirit can know them. In the same way, only theSpirit of God knows God's thoughts. We have not received the spirit of the world. We have received the Spiritwho is from God. The Spirit helps us understand what God has freely given us. That is what we speak about. We don't use words taught to us by people. We use words taught to us by the Holy Spirit. We use the words ofthe Spirit to teach the truths of the Spirit.1Cor.2:10-14 And the Holy Spirit speaks to us primarily throughthe Scriptures, God’s Word: The word of the prophets is made more certain. We have that word. Youmust pay attention to it. It is like a light shining in a dark place. It will shine until the day Jesus comes. Thenthe Morning Star will rise in your hearts. Above all, here is what you must understand. No prophecy in Scriptureever came from a prophet's own understanding. It never came simply because a prophet wanted it to. Instead, theHoly Spirit guided the prophets as they spoke. So prophecy comes from God.2Pet.1:19-21We are all born spiritually dead (and so deaf to God) because of Adam’s sinful nature that weinherited—even though we are created in God’s image: At one time you were dead in your sins. Your

sinful nature was not circumcised. But God gave you new life together with Christ. He forgave us all of oursins.Col.2:13 Some people don't have the Holy Spirit. They don't accept the things that come from the Spirit ofGod. Things like that are foolish to them. They can't understand them. In fact, things can't be understoodwithout the Spirit's help But we have the mind of Christ.1Cor.2:14-16 So we need more than just ourphysical ears to hear God: Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see butdo not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people.Ezek.12:2 With your own eyes you haveseen everything the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh. You have seen what he did to all of Pharaoh's officialsand to his whole land. With your own eyes you saw how the LORD really made them suffer. You saw hismiraculous signs and great wonders. But to this very day the LORD hasn't given you a mind that understands. He hasn't given you eyes that see. He hasn't given you ears that hear.Deut.29:2-4 To hear from God, we needspiritual senses—and these come from being be re-born spiritually: No one can enter God's kingdomwithout being born through water and the Holy Spirit. People give birth to people. But the Spirit gives birth tospirit. You should not be surprised when I say, ‘You must all be born again.’Jn.3:5-8Some people think that the Bible is book of mythology that is akin to fairy-tales. Other peoplethink the Bible is a book of mysteries with hidden meanings which only certain enlightenedpeople can understand. But the Bible is actually a revelation of God’s plan of salvation formankind through Jesus Christ, God’s Son, our Saviour and if we lose sight of the purpose ofScripture, we will get side-tracked into all sorts of superstition and conspiracy theories that willlead us into confusion, distract us from faith in God and leave us spiritually tired. Although theBible is not a science book, it does contain eternal truths of science and nature. Although theBible is not a history book, it does contain accurate historical records. Although the Bible is nota philosophy book, it does contain wonderful insights into philosophy and promotes the highestmoral standards. Although the Bible is not tomorrow’s newspaper where we can read what willhappen to individuals or countries, it does contain clear information on our future and how thisworld will end. But the Bible does have hidden meanings—yet only to those who are spirituallydead! To those of us who are born-again, the Bible is an open Book because our spiritual senseshave been awakened, our spiritual ears have been opened, so now we can hear God speak tous through the Bible. You are permitted to understand the secrets [mysteries] of the Kingdom of God. But Iuse parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: 'When they look, they won't really see. When they hear, they won't understand.'Lk.8:10The Bible is a spiritual Book that has God’s life in its words. For no word from God will ever fail[void of power].Lk.1:37 Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you maycommand your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they areyour life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.Deut.32:46-47 And so theBible is our spiritual life and our spiritual food: Man must not live on bread alone but on every wordthat comes from the mouth of God.Matt.4:4 The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But some of you do not believe me." (For Jesusknew from the beginning which ones didn't believe, and he knew who would betray him.) Then he said, "Thatis why I said that people can't come to me unless the Father gives them to me."Jn.6:63-65 As well as being ourspiritual food, the Bible is also our guide book to prepare us for living righteously: God hasbreathed life into all of Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. By using Scripture,a man of God can be completely prepared to do every good thing. 2Tim.3:16-17 So we must take care that welisten to what God says to us. Let me tell you what's going on here: No one in history surpasses John theBaptizer; but in the kingdom he prepared you for, the lowliest person is ahead of him. For a long time now peoplehave tried to force themselves into God's kingdom. But if you read the books of the Prophets and God's Lawclosely, you will see them culminate in John, teaming up with him in preparing the way for the Messiah of thekingdom. Looked at in this way, John is the ‘Elijah' you've all been expecting to arrive and introduce theMessiah. Are you listening to me? Really listening?Matt.11:11-15 If we put God’s Word into practice, we are

blessed—but if ignore God’s Word we are going to have major problems (or worse, if wequarrel with God)! Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like awise But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolishman.Matt.7:24-26 They say to each other, 'Come on, let's go hear the prophet tell us what the LORD is saying!' Somy people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intentionof doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. You arevery entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on aninstrument. They hear what you say, but they don't act on it! But when all these terrible things happen to them–as they certainly will–then they will know a prophet has been among them.Is.33:30-33 What sorrow awaits thosewho argue with their Creator.Is.45:9So let’s continue to listen carefully to God and pay attention to His Word—then we will betruly blessed as we live our lives in fellowship with God and at peace with Him. Great peace havethose who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.Ps.119:165Sunday 19th January 2020. Ps.72:1-8. Lk.8:22-56I know that power has gone out from me.Lk.8:46Jesus was unique—and is unique. When He spoke, demons left, diseases were healed and deathwas conquered—and it is the same today when He speaks. The big question is how? And theanswer is simple—Jesus is the Son of God. You are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will becalled the Son of the Most High.Lk.1:31-32 At once he [Paul] began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is theSon of God.Acts 9:20There is no greater mystery than God. When the identity of God is discussed there are a widerange of ideas put forward. Some have gained acceptance and formed the basis for the world'sreligions. For those who have realised that God must have an identity, they conclude that Hemust be a person. And this is called theism—or more precisely, monotheism. Judaism, Islam, andChristianity are three great monotheistic religions of the world. But Christianity is furtherdistinguished from these other monotheistic religions by identifying God as Father, Son andHoly Spirit. The reason for this, is the clear presentation in Scripture of God's identity by thesethree terms. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted himat his right hand as Leader and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnessesto these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him. Acts.5:30-32 For there arethree that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 1John 5:7This belief is referred to as “the doctrine of the Trinity” and although the word “trinity” is not foundin Scriptures, the Bible clearly teaches that there is only one true God: Hear, O Israel, the Lordour God, the Lord is one.Deut.6:4 I am the Lord and there is no other; apart from me there is no god.Is.45:5-6 Thereis no God but one. There is but one God, the father from whom all things come.1Cor.8:4-6 And yet this oneGod is revealed in three persons: He saw the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) descending like a dove, and lighting upon him (Jesus, God the Son), and a voice from heaven (God the Father) said,This is my Son.Matt.3:16-17 I (God the Son) will ask the Father (God the Father) and he will give youanother counsellor (God the Holy Spirit).John 14:16 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptisingthem in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.Matt.28:19 Exalted to the righthand of God, he (Jesus, God the Son) has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit.Acts 2:33God (the Father) anointed Jesus of Nazareth (God the Son) with the Holy Spirit.Acts 10:38 Christ(God the Son), who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God (the Father).Heb.9:14 Thegrace of the Lord Jesus Christ (God the Son), and the love of God (the Father), and the fellowshipof the Holy Spirit be with you all.2Cor.13:14When the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, he declared himself thePontifex Maximus (greatest priest) of the Church. In A.D.325, he called for a Council of Bishopsto come to Nicaea to resolve the divisive doctrine invented by Arius that Christ was a created

being and therefore the Trinity was not a Biblical concept. [Nicolas, Bishop of Myra (in presentday Turkey) is believed to have been imprisoned during this Council for getting so angry withArius that he punched him—the bishop is now known as St Nicolas or Santa Claus!] It wasAthanasius who swayed the debate in favour of accepting Christ's claims of divinity and theBiblical presentation of the Triune God. He argued that if it could be shown that God theFather was eternal, then He must have an eternal Son. Similarly, if Christ is eternal, then He mustbe the eternal God. This is what the Nicaean Council conferred: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, True God from true God,Begotten, not made, Of one Being with the Father; Through him all things were made Nicene CreedIn much the same way that “Queen” is the title of our monarch and yet her name is Elizabeth,so “God” is a title and “Lord” (Jehovah/Yahweh) is His Name: And God said to Moses, "I amYahweh–'the LORD.' I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as El-Shaddai–'God Almighty'–but I did not reveal my name, Yahweh, to them. Ex.6:2-3 Within the title of “God” there are threedistinct Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Although these three are equal, God (Father,Son and Holy Spirit) is not a rule of three (triumvirate), but a rule of one (Trinity). Jesus taughtthat all Persons of the Godhead equally deserved to be honoured and worshiped: that all mayhonour the Son, just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father whosent him.Jn.5:23Jesus was always God—co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit: In thebeginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with Godin the beginning.Jn.1:1-2 Although Jesus was always the Son of God, when Mary conceived Jesus bythe Holy Spirit, He became human with a physical body. So the Word became human and made hishome among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of theFather's one and only Son.Jn.1:14 The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High willovershadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Lk.1:35 (The phrase “overshadow”refers to the protection of the Presence of God: He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wingsyou will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Ps.91:4) As Mary’s son, Jesus grew anddeveloped as a human being: Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and all thepeople.Lk.2:52 Jesus’ ministry of teaching people about God was a prelude to laying down His lifeas a sacrifice for our sins. But before Jesus began His ministry, He was baptised in water andthe Holy Spirit descended upon Him as a tangible Presence (or Person): When all the people werebeing baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened. The Holy Spirit came downon him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven. It said, “You are my Son, and I love you. I am verypleased with you.”Lk.3:21-22 This personal presence of the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to live as aperfect human rather than as the Son of God—Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit’s support andstrength instead of using His intrinsic deity. Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equalitywith God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very natureof a servant, being made in human likeness.Phil.2:6-7 Through the Holy S
