January:Songs for the Moment: Mary. My soul does magnify the Lord and my spirit has rejoicedin God my Saviour For He who is mighty has done great things and holy is HisName. Lk.1:46-48Sunday 1st January 2017. Ps.105:1-9.New Year Resolutions. Most people who make New Year Resolutions do not manage to keep them for very long. However, New Year Resolutions (or any-time-of-the-year-resolutions) can help us to review ourperspective and potential and think about what we would like to achieve during the comingyear. Although “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” the road to heaven is paved with gooddecisions – and our life this new year will be the result of the decisions we will make each day- or have already made! It is good to have goals and aspirations in our natural life – what wewant to achieve in our work, our family, our finances, etc., but it is even better to have goalsand aspirations in our spiritual life – what we want to achieve in our relationship with God.So, what do you want to achieve in your relationship with God this year?Cultural traditions like Christmas festivities or New Year resolutions can become superstitiousacts but so can Christian traditions become superstitious acts – good traditions like faith, prayer, fasting, giving, or even worship - if we believe that when we do these things God must dosomething for us. Being a Christian means that we are redeemed, Holy Spirit regenerated peoplewho are blessed and holy (dedicated to God’s service) and so our activities and the objects weuse are also blessed and holy: On that day even the harness bells of the horses will be inscribed with thesewords: HOLY TO THE LORD. In fact, every cooking pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORDof Heaven's Armies.Zech.14:20-21 But those activities and objects do not have any spiritual power over,or with, God or the enemy - that is superstition. All we receive from God is by His grace, which is His sovereign free will. Prayer is one of the greatest privileges of God's grace and wecommune with God in prayer as we pour out our hearts, present our requests and still ourspirits to hear His voice. Wesley said, God can do nothing except in answer to prayer. He was wrong- very wrong. God does not need our permission to do anything! Yet people teach that wemust pray in order to get God to move on our behalf or even worse - to help God achieve Hispurpose in the earth today. Rather than telling God what He should do, we should be praying- Not my will, but Yours be done. Our praying is to commune with God not to coerce Him. Weproclaim a Gospel that promotes the centrality of Christ and His finished work on the Crossvalidated by His resurrection and sealed by Pentecost. This year my New Year Resolution is to know Christ better and also for you to know Christbetter too. That I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comesfrom the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis offaith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I havealready obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which ChristJesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing Ido: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prizefor which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.Phil.3:8-14 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, maygive you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes ofyour heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of hisglorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is thesame as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in

the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, notonly in the present age but also in the one to come.Eph.1:16-21How do we know Christ better? We have to work at knowing Christ better by Hearingand then Obeying the Word of Christ. Faith is a gift but knowledge is attained by work through study, work and perseverance!Hear the Word: People often say that difficult times strengthen their faith and for many theydo. But faith does not come from difficult times – faith comes from hearing the word of Christ. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.Rom.10:17 This faith does not come fromjust hearing about Christ but hearing spiritually about Christ. They Israelites heard physicallyabout Christ through Moses but very few actually heard spiritually (in their spirits). TheIsraelites hardened their hearts when they heard God speak and said that it would be better togo back to Egypt. Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rosein a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in thewilderness!” they complained. “Why is the LORD taking us to this country only to have us die in battle?” Then they plotted among themselves, “Let's choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!” Nu.14:1-4 If we startentertaining thoughts about whether our Christian life is worth the effort of resistingtemptation, or of choosing right over wrong, or honouring God before ourselves, then we willvery soon find our hearts hardened and succumb to lack of rest - which is physical and spiritualstress. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share inall that belongs to Christ. Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts asIsrael did when they rebelled.” And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice?Wasn't it the people Moses led out of Egypt? And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn't it the peoplewho sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath thatthey would never enter his rest? Wasn't it the people who disobeyed him? So we see that because of their unbeliefthey were not able to enter his rest.Heb.3:14-19 God rarely speaks directly to us in Person (as He did withMoses, Samuel and Paul) but He does speak directly to us through the Scriptures – which is thewritten record of Jesus: In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and invarious ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.Heb.1:1-2 You study the Scriptures diligentlybecause you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me. Jn.5:39We must stay sensitive to the Word of Christ and the Holy Spirit who speaks of Christ: Whenthe Counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father,he will testify about me.Jn.15:26 Seven times, Jesus says: Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit andunderstand what he is saying to the churches.Rev.2:17Obey the Word: Hearing about God is a good start for us but we must also act on what wehear or our theology will remain just theory. The message that Moses brought the Israeliteshad to be believed, spoken and obeyed. This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for youto understand, and it is not beyond your reach. It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, ‘Who willgo up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’ It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away thatyou must ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’ No, the message is very closeat hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.Deut.30:11-14 Hearing alone is not believing.Don't just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says. Suppose you listento the word but don't do what it says. Then you are like a man who looks at his face in a mirror. After lookingat himself, he leaves. Right away he forgets what he looks like. But suppose you take a good look at the perfectlaw that gives freedom. You keep looking at it. You don't forget what you've heard, but you do what the lawsays. Then you will be blessed in what you do.Jas.1:22-25 We are foolish if we do not obey God but we arewise if we obey Him: Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like awise man who built his house on the rock.Matt.7:24 There is great blessing in believing and doing whatGod says: I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant

is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know thesethings, you will be blessed if you do them.Jn.13:15-17New Year Resolutions do not have to be silly, spurious or superstitious but if we focus onthe spiritual rather than the sensual, our whole life will be affected, for our own good and thegood of those around us. I intend to keep my New Year Resolution all year long - myresolution of knowing Christ better and helping you know Christ better. What’s yourNew Year Resolution?Sunday 8th January 2017. Ps.106:1-5. Lk.2:41-3:20God’s Glorious SalvationLast week we prayed about these seven topics: Government, Law, Life, Marriage, Freedom,Church and God's Glory and also suggested that we continued to pray about them throughoutthis coming year. Prayer is one of the greatest privileges of God's grace and in prayer wecommune with God as we pour out our hearts and present our requests to Him as well asstilling our spirits to hear His voice. Praying is communing with God not trying to coerce Him.In prayer, we wonder and ponder at God’s glory, splendour and holiness as we yield to His will.God is “awesome” (inducing awe) as well as “awful” (inspiring awe) and in prayer we catch a glimpseof who God really is. This awe is sometimes called fear: The fear of the LORD is the beginning ofwisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.Prov.9:10 This fear is not the fear of being afraidthough, but the fear of reverence and respect.Interestingly, instead of asking God to change people, John the Baptist asked the people tochange - he preached what we are praying for! But John was unique and his ministry was toprepare the way of the Lord, for people to receive God’s glorious salvation through Jesus.Gabriel told Zechariah that he would have a son who will prepare the way for the Lord. He will havethe same spirit and power that Elijah had. He will teach parents how to love their children. He will also teachpeople who don't obey to be wise and do what is right. In this way, he will prepare a people who are ready for theLord.Lk.1:17 (Christianity is about being prepared for the Lord, being wise and doing what is right,as well as promoting harmonious family relationships.) A few months later, when John wasborn, Zechariah prophesied a similar same message over his son: And you, my child, will be calleda prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people theknowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which therising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guideour feet into the path of peace.Lk.1:76-79Even though Jesus has already come, we still need to prepare the way of the Lord so peoplecan receive God’s glorious salvation through Jesus. John’s ministry was to be a messenger callingout in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’Lk.3:4 and his message included making the way to Godeasy by removing obstacles and helping people see God’s salvation – Jesus: Make straight pathsfor him. Every valley will be filled in. Every mountain and hill will be made level. The crooked roads will becomestraight. The rough ways will become smooth. And everyone will see God's salvation.’ Lk.3:4-6 The originalprophecy uses glory instead of salvation: Then the glory of the LORD will appear. And everyone will seeit. The LORD has spoken. Is.40:5 But salvation and glory are linked: Therefore I endure everything for thesake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 2Tim.2:10 Surelyhis salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Ps.85:9 Hallelujah! Salvation andglory and power belong to our God, for true and just are his judgments.Rev.19:1-2John was the greatest prophet under the Old Covenant (remember, prophecy is testifying aboutJesus: For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.Rev.19:10). But Jesus said that the leastin the kingdom of heaven is greater than John. Truly I tell you, among those born of women there hasnot risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent

people have been raiding it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing toaccept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear.Matt.11:11-15 The Kingdom of God(or kingdom of heaven) is already here because the kingdom is the King’s domain (rule) – thekingdom of God is the rule of Christ in our hearts. This kingdom is also righteousness, peace andjoy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives humanapproval.Rom.14:17-18 Yes, as Gabriel told Zechariah, Christianity is about being ready for theLord, being wise and doing what is right as well as promoting harmonious familyrelationshipsThose of us who have received this glorious salvation are also called to proclaim the messageof our glorious salvation to the rest of mankind: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to allcreation.Mk.16:15 Although this glorious salvation is freely given by God, He does expect us to livea life that is compatible with His character and values. Living a holy life that honours God isimportant because: 1) we represent God who is holy and honourable; 2) it is the way we aremeant to live; 3) it is the only way people will see what God is really like; 4) it is the only waypeople will see the benefits of living godly lives. If we do not live a holy life that honours God,our theology will just be a philosophy or an alternative lifestyle. The more we appreciate ourglorious salvation, the more determined we will be to live a holy life that honours God. Andthere are great benefits (blessings) too – the benefit (blessing) of knowing that we please God;of knowing that we are at peace with God and ourselves ; of knowing that we reap eternalrewards; of knowing that our quality of life is better; of knowing that we are helping others tosee God.As we pray for these topics, let us endeavour to make our lifestyle match our prayerstyle.Government. I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made foreveryone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness andholiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour.1Tim.2:1-3Law. For the Lord's sake, respect all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he hasappointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honour those who do right.1Pet.2:13-14For Life. And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of theselittle ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and tobe drowned in the depths of the sea.Matt.18:5-6For Marriage. Give honour to marriage, and remain faithful to one another in marriage. God will surelyjudge people who are immoral and those who commit adultery.Heb.13:4For Freedom. It is God's will that your honourable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolishaccusations against you. For you are free, yet you are God's slaves, so don't use your freedom as an excuse to doevil. Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters. Fear God, and respect the king.1Pet.2:15-17For the Church. Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch overyou as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would beof no benefit to you. Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honourably inevery way. I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.Heb.13:17-19For God's Glory. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for everand ever. Amen.1Tim.1:17Yes, God’s glorious salvation is much more than escaping the terrors of hell – it is entering thetreasures of heaven and enjoying the journey too! So let’s continue to pray, proclaim, practiceand enjoy the way of the Lord – God’s glorious salvation. Remember, that in God’s kingdom(the reign of Christ in our hearts) the least of us is greater than any of the OT saints, includingJohn the Baptist, because we have a greater Covenant with greater privileges and greaterbenefits (blessings) now that God is with us – Emmanuel

Sunday 15th January 2017. Ps.107:1-9. Lk.4:1-30Repentance and Remission of Sins The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me topreach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom (remission) for the prisoners and recoveryof sight for the blind, to release (remission) the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour.Lk.4:28-19Remission in medicine means the subsiding of the symptoms of a disease but in theology itmeans release (as from a debt) or forgiveness. Jesus explained to His disciples that remission ofsins was a biblical message that would continue to be preached across the world: This is what iswritten: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness(remission) of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses ofthese things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothedwith power from on high.Lk.24:47-49The message of the Gospel is that our sins have been dismissed from us and we are no longerjoined to them because we are dead to sin – if we have repented (which means a change ofmind). Repentance is the key to the remission of sin because it unlocks the door of salvationand dismisses our sin – sin is evicted. We still have the capacity and capability to sin: Direct myfootsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.Ps.119:33 But sin is not part of our new nature afterare born-again because we are born again of an incorruptible seed.1Pet.1:23 What shall we say, then?Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, thatwe should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. For sin shall not be your master, because youare not under law, but under grace. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads toholiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in ChristJesus our Lord.Rom.6:1-23The scapegoat in the OT illustrates remission of sins - that our sin was laid on Jesus and thensent away from us: as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.Ps.103:12(William Tyndale invented the word “scapegoat” when he translated his 1530 Bible rendering the Latin as"(e)scape goat".) Aaron took two goats: Then he is to take the two goats and present them before theLORD Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD and sacrifice it for a sin offering. But thegoat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to be used for making atonementby sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.Lev.16:7-10 Each goat represented an aspect of our salvation:one goat represented Jesus who died and so it was killed as a sin offering (illustrating Jesus ourSacrifice who died as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the worldJn.1:29); the other goatrepresented Jesus who is alive so it was released alive (escaped) into the wilderness (illustratingJesus our Intercessor who is alive: but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercedefor them.Heb.7:24-25)This remission of sins is the Good News that we believe and preach – that we have been setfree from every sin: Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins isproclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin. Acts.13:38-39 But facts alone arenot enough. Active theology, not academic theology is salvation – we must trust (believe)God enough to act on what He says. The Bible doesn’t call us to convert a culture of atheistsinto theists - it calls us to abide in Christ, to know Him, and to join Him in His mission tomake God - Jesus’ Father and our Father - known to the world. Theology is importantbecause bad theology makes hard Christianity but good theology makes easy Christianity. Our God is the God of rest: The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.Lk.6:5 The OT Atonement wasmade on a day of rest when no work may be carried out: you must deny yourselves and not do anywork because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will

be clean from all your sins.Lev.16:29-30 George Canty wrote: No workaholics! Sweat is evidence of hardwork and God doesn't want it to be hard work to come to Him. Strenuous effort and hardsearching only give us something to boast about, and makes God look as if He is sullen andindifferent, or playing hide and seek with us, pretending that He doesn’t want us to find Him.That is the God of the mystics - waiting and straining to hear Him – that is not the God of theBible. The Lord did not say "Labour pleases me"; His favourites are not masochists wearinghair-shirts. The Word is "Call upon Him while He may be found". The Bible is the world'shappiest book. Is God happy when we refuse His good things, and make righteousnessunattractive? Eternal life means quality lifestyle, companionship with God, the source of allgoodness.God’s Word returns to Him after it has done what He wants: So is my word that goes out from mymouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sentit.Is.55:11 God speaks His Word through us - so when we have been clothed with power from on highby receiving the Holy Spirit, we are anointed (equipped and empowered) to present God’sGood News about His glorious salvation, our past is irrelevant because we are a newcreation.2Cor.5:17 For no word from God will ever fail (void of power).Lk.1:37 For the word of God is alive andactive. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; itjudges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything isuncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Heb.4:12-13God speaks to us sowe can speak to others and comfort them: The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue,to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like onebeing instructed.Is.50:4 We pass on to others what we have received from God.1Cor.11:23;2Tim.2:2 Godwants “partners” – people who will cooperate with Him. In all my prayers for all of you, I always praywith joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that hewho began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.Phil.1:4-6 This“partnership” is actually “fellowship” and our fellowship is with God as well as one another: Weproclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowshipis with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.1Jn.1:3 God can use anyone including non-believers,but if there is no trust (faith), there is no partnership and no enjoyment or reward. Cyrus wascalled God’s anointed but he was not God’s partner: This is what the LORD says to his anointed, toCyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armour, to opendoors before him so that gates will not be shut.Is.45:1 Nero was another “servant” of God but he certainlywas not a partner: Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except thatwhich God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoeverrebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgementon themselves. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, forrulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on thewrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but alsoas a matter of conscience.Rom.13:1-6 Nebuchadnezzar was also a “servant” of God but he became apartner: King Nebuchadnezzar, To the nations and peoples of every language, who live in all the earth: Mayyou prosper greatly! It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most HighGod has performed for me. How mighty his wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; his dominion enduresfrom generation to generation.Dan.4:1-2But we are partners with God, so let’s spread the good news of repentance and remissionof sins – not the subsiding of the symptoms of sin but the release and forgiveness of sins:My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate withthe Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours butalso for the sins of the whole world.1Jn.2:1-2

Sunday 22nd January 2017. Ps.107:1-9. Lk.4The God of Miracles But because you say so, I will Lk.5:5Science observes behaviour and when the same result occurs under similar circumstances, it isnoted as a scientific fact – whether it is physics, chemistry or any other study. But spirituality isnot science and we can do the same things week after week but one day we will get a differentresult because God has intervened. The God of the Bible is a God of miracles: You are the Godwho performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.Ps.77:14 We do not have to be stupid,naïve, or deranged to belie
