1.1INT. SAN VITTORE PRISON, MILAN (2003)- DAYCLOSE ON: AN ASHEN-FACED WOMANWrap-around sunglasses cover her eyes. A burning cigarette inher hand. A tower of ash lands next to her off-white sneaker.This is PATRIZIA REGGIANI (50s). She addresses us directly.PATRIZIAI don’t believe in lessons- I was alousy student. Nothing puts me tosleep faster than a book. So I hopeyou don’t think I’m trying to teachyou a moral lesson here, or tellyou something you already know. Ijust want you to hear my story, toknow the facts before it got alldistorted. Before journalists tookit out of my hands.2INT. CAFE, VIA PALESTRO, MILAN (1995)- DAYON MAURIZIO GUCCI. 47. Three-piece suit. Persols.Effortlessly elegant. Finishes his coffee.PATRIZIA (V.O.)It was a name that sounded sosweet, so seductive. Synonymouswith wealth, style, power.3INT. SAN VITTORE PRISON, MILAN (2003)- DAYShe removes her sunglasses and we get a glimpse of her VIOLETEYES. They are both electric and intimidating.PATRIZIABut that last name was a curse,too. It belonged to a Tuscanfamily. They didn’t fight over landor crown. They fought over theirown skins and the leather of theirsacred cows.4INT/EXT. CAFE.VIA PALESTRO, MILAN (1995)- DAYMaurizio steps out of a café and walks briskly along thesidewalk, avoiding the road A man calls out behind him.MANSignor Gucci?Maurizio turns around.

2.TITLE UP: MILAN, 19785*EXT. FERNANDO REGGIANI’S TRUCKING COMPANY- DAYBIRD’S EYE: Patrizia’s orange FIAT 124 Spider takes the exitramp off of a new clover-field freeway in Milan’s hinterland.Patrizia parks her Fiat. She steps out in a super-tightpolkadot dress, tall heels, wrap around sunglasses.As she walks towards her office trailer, a GROUP of truckersstop washing their trucks. Completely transfixed by her.TRUCKERSBuongiorno Signorina Reggiani.Patrizia waves at them, keeps walking towards us.6INT. OFFICE TRAILER- DAYC/U: Patrizia’s long nails type on a typewriter like it’s aSteinway piano. She is working on an EXPENSE REPORT.PATRIZIA (V.O.)I helped with my stepfather’s bookstwice a week. Enough to break manynails and save him a ton of cash.He hands her a stack of CHECKS. Patrizia places Fernando’ssignature above the blank checks. Copies it perfectly.Patrizia’s stepfather FERNANDO REGGIANI (50s) stops byPatrizia’s desk. He wears a shiny silver double breastedsuit. He removes his comb, slicks his hair back.PATRIZIAHey Fernando, your lunches aregetting expensive.He smiles, kisses her on the head and leaves.HARD CUT TO:The clock strikes 5 pm and Patrizia packs her stuff. Sheflicks the carriage return on the typewriter.As Patrizia walks away, the telephone rings.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)Hello? Max!Tonight? I think I’m free.*

3.7EXT. PALAZZO DEGLI OMENONI- NIGHTA Jaguar E-type pulls up outside the stunning Palazzo showing16th century statues contorted in pain. Patrizia steps outwearing a head-to-toe mink coat. Her hair, make-up, shoes:she means business. We can smell her perfume.PATRIZIA (V.O.)It was a costume party thrown byCount Sarzana . Max had met him theprevious summer. La creme de lacreme of Milanese high society.ON MAX (25) swarthy, gay and devilishly handsome. He removessomething from the glovebox, puts it in his mouth. Turnsaround, smiles for Patrizia. DRACULA. MUSIC CUE: LA BAMBOLA.WE FOLLOW PATRIZIA: She passes the NIGHT PORTER, heads up thelavish staircase, passes two giggling guests dressed asMATADORS. She approaches the enormous double-doors which Maxswings open for her. Enters the BALLROOM.8INT. PALAZZO DEGLI OMENONI, BALLROOM- NIGHTA “Carnevale” party. The costumes are exquisite. Venetianmasks, Arlecchini, classical composers, historical figures.Max, standing behind her like a servant, removes Patrizia’sMINK COAT and reveals the most smoldering red dress ever.*ON THE GUESTS: Conversations stop. Everybody in the roomnotices. The men, of course. But also the women.**CUT TO:The host, COUNT SARZANA, accompanied by two STIFFS, istalking to Patrizia and Max.COUNT SARZANAWhere was I?PATRIZIAYou were talking about yourself.COUNT SARZANAAs I was saying- people don’trespect aristocrats like they usedto. I had to work hard to be who Iam. But my looks are God-given.PATRIZIAI’m an atheist.

4.COUNT SARZANAYou’re still my type. You know why?You don’t ask stupid questions.You’re beautiful. You know yourplace in the world. I just wish youwere taller. But I happen to loveheels.PATRIZIAAnd I wish you were smarter andfunnier, Count. But c’est la vie.Count Sarzana smiles awkwardly.STIFF #1Max always brings interestingcharacters. Remember the dairyqueen he invited last time?STIFF #2She got ridiculously drunk. Off ofone glass of Prosecco.STIFF #1It was hilarious.STIFF #2(staring at her breasts)Are you in the dairy business too?Stiff #1 elbows his friend. Max takes Patrizia’s arm.MAXLet’s get you a glass of wine.She pulls her arm back, clearly incensed.PATRIZIAI’ll get my own damn drink.9LATER AT THE BARA nerdy guy in a TUX stands awkwardly by the bar. He keepspushing his oversized glasses into the bridge of his nose.This is MAURIZIO GUCCI (25). Patrizia sidles up next to him.PATRIZIATanqueray Martini. Very dirty.Maurizio turns around. Their eyes meet. He’s speechless.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)Or should I pour it myself?*

5.He quickly reaches for the Johnny Walker, makes her a drink.MAURIZIOI don’t work here.PATRIZIAWell why are you dressed like awaiter? Is that your costume?MAURIZIO(tongue-tied)I- I- didn’t know it was a costumeparty.PATRIZIAWho invited you?Bianca.MAURIZIOPATRIZIAI don’t know her.MAURIZIOBianca Sarzana.Silence.***MAURIZIO (CONT'D)It’s her house.PATRIZIAOh. Right. That Bianca.Maurizio awkwardly drops an ice cube on the floor. He grabsit, doesn’t know what to do with it so he puts it back in hisdrink. Patrizia laughs. He’s fucking clueless.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)If anybody asks, tell them you’re007.Maurizio reflects on this. Nods to himself. She’s right.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)I’m Patrizia.Maurizio bows, gives her a baise-main. He’s very old school.MAURIZIOMaurizio. How come I’ve never seenyou before?

6.PATRIZIAYou weren’t looking hard enough.MAURIZIOI would have noticed if Bianca knewElizabeth Taylor.PATRIZIAI can assure you I am way more fun.Patrizia studies him. He is refreshingly uneasy.PATRIZIA (V.O.)There was a sweetness in the air Ihadn’t experienced before.10INT. PALAZZO DEGLI OMENONI, BALLROOM- NIGHTMaurizio and Patrizia slow-dance to Il Cielo in una Stanza byMina. Maurizio is a terrible dancer. And he’s twice herheight. She leads, swaying to the music and helping himalong. She’s a good teacher and endeared by his ungainliness.PATRIZIA (V.O.)I liked the way he smelled. It feltlike home. Like I’d met him before.Maurizio subtly looks at his Jaeger Lecoultre Reverso watch.It’s MIDNIGHT. He pulls away from Patrizia.PATRIZIAIs my dancing that bad?MAURIZIOForgive me. I’m sorry.He holds her hand affectionately. Then looks down at theirinterlocked hands and quickly “snaps” out of it.PATRIZIAIt’s only midnight, Cinderella.The night is young.MAURIZIOI turn into a frog at midnight.They exchange smiles.PATRIZIA(loudly)It’s a pumpkin. Not a frog.***

7.1112INT. VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO- MEMORY ROOM*Maurizio walks down the long hallway in his family’s statelyvilla. He stops outside a room. Through the half-open door,we see a PROJECTOR whirring, blasting a silent film on awhite wall. Maurizio steps into the room.****A MAN watches the footage, cigarette in hand. The man raiseshis hand- “I see you”. Maurizio closes the door and leaves.**INT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD, KITCHEN- MORNINGPatrizia stands barefoot in the kitchen, looking a littlerough, last night’s make-up faded on her face. She watchesthe Bialetti coffee machine as it bubbles away on the stove.Her mother Silvana yanks the coffee off the stove.Patrizia is reading the Corriere della Sera- an Italian dailynewspaper. She flips through the pages. Suddenly stops,brings the paper closer:A PAPARAZZI SHOT OF MAURIZIO LEAVING THE COSTUME PARTY.A Headline: “YOUNG GUCCI HEIR OUT ON THE TOWN”SILVANAWhen did you get in?PATRIZIAA little past midnight.SILVANAWhy didn’t you call? Did he behave?Who?PATRIZIASILVANAThat friend of yours Max. Who else?PATRIZIAHe dropped me off after the party.SILVANAI don’t like how he drives, hemakes me nervous. He’s a libertine.PATRIZIAHe’s a homosexual. Not a libertine.SILVANAHe can still learn how to drive.(beat)Did you meet anyone?***

8.PATRIZIA**SILVANAYou’re not a kid. You’re 30.**PATRIZIA**No.I’m 25.SILVANA25, 30- You need to find someonebefore you lose your looks. Nobodywill marry you for your brain,Patrizia. They’ll marry you foryour looks. Thankfully you gotthose from me.*******PATRIZIA (V.O.)Mother never worked a day in herlife, so she made it her full-timejob to find me the wrong man.****Silvana cuts around the photo of a handsome playboy from amagazine and places it in a binder. There are dozens of otherfaces, names.PATRIZIA (V.O.)She would go through the tabloidsand track every rich bachelor intown. Then she’d get in touch withtheir families, and I’d be sent offto check out the next party. Butthis was different. This was mystory. I wanted to write it myself.13EXT. CAFE LA FORTUNA- DAYRAIN. Patrizia, in a Burberry raincoat and flat shoes, standsunder the cafe’s awning opposite the Università La Cattolica.She watches students trickle out, smoke cigarettes, gossip.MAURIZIO appears in the crowd. Patrizia follows him as hecrosses the street and enters the oldest BOOKSHOP in Milan.14INT. HOEPLI BOOKSHOP- DAYMaurizio browses the stacks. He pulls a book out, revealingPatrizia’s eyes staring at him from the other side.PATRIZIA(feigning surprise)Maurizio?He looks at her. Puzzled. Pushes his glasses in.***********

9.MAURIZIOHave we met?*She pulls a few more books out, revealing herself.MAURIZIO (CONT'D)Elizabeth Taylor!**PATRIZIA(proudly)Patrizia Reggiani.***MAURIZIOYes of course, Patrizia. Do youstudy here?*PATRIZIAI’m considering it. My problem isthat I hate reading. I get bored.She notices the books under his arm.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)What are those about?MAURIZIOThey’re very exciting books aboutthe legislative process. I’mstudying to be a lawyer.**PATRIZIAYou seem too nice to be a lawyer.MAURIZIOThere’s a few good ones out there.PATRIZIAThe dead ones.He laughs at her joke.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)Any advice on what courses to take?MAURIZIODefinitely skip the politicalscience classes. They’re small.They’ll notice you snoozing.PATRIZIAI’m a quiet sleeper. I learned tosleep on my back when I was six.*

10.MAURIZIOThat sounds very uncomfortable.PATRIZIAIt’s to avoid sleep lines on myface.She looks into his eyes, launching a thousand ships andloving the tension building up between them.15EXT. HOEPLI BOOKSHOP- DAYMaurizio and Patrizia walk out of the bookshop together- sheis helping with his books. They arrive at his LAMBRETTA. Heputs the books in the trunk and straps his helmet on.FRANCO, Maurizio’s bodyguard-chauffeur, is parked on theother side of the street. He opens his window to get a betterview of Patrizia.PATRIZIAWhat were the chances of us seeingeach other again? It’s fate.MAURIZIOIt was a really nice surprise.PATRIZIAAren’t you going to ask me out?She closes in on him like a feral animal. He’s cornered.MAURIZIOYou want to go on a date with me?PATRIZIAI want to know how this story goes.MAURIZIOWell- ah- I- IShe reaches into her purse and pulls out LIPSTICK. Shescrawls her phone number on his Lambretta’s WINDSHIELD.PATRIZIAThat’s my number. I’m very busy butI’ll try and make time for you.She kisses him on the cheek. It’s quite possibly the mostaction Maurizio has ever had.Franco, still watching them, smiles.

11.16EXT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD, GARDEN- DAYPatrizia listens to an LP by Mina and hair-dryes her freshlypainted toenails. WE HEAR THE PHONE RING. SILVANA comes in.SILVANAIt’s for you. I think it’s Max.Patrizia takes the phone.Hello?PATRIZIAA smile forms on her face when she hears the caller’s voice.SNAPSHOT: PATRIZIA on the back of MAURIZIO’S LAMBRETTA. Shegrips him around the waist, legs around him. Franco, thebodyguard, drives behind them in a sedan.SNAPSHOT: Maurizio and Patrizia eat panzerotti (hotpockets)in the street. He takes a huge bite and makes a mess: he’snever had one and it shows. She cleans him up with napkins.On FRANCO THE BODYGUARD, watching from across the street. Hesmiles to himself as a he lights a cigarette.PATRIZIA (V.O.)Maurizio’s father was terrifiedthat the Red Brigades would kidnaphis son. They’d been targeting richItalian kids. So he ordered Francoto follow Maurizio everywhere.17EXT. LAKE COMO- DAYMaurizio and Patrizia ride the scooter through the heavymist. Franco follows behind. They go over the brow of a hill.Franco looks perplexed: he can’t see them anywhere. Theyvanished in the mist.ON MAURIZIO AND PATRIZIA. They approach the line of row boatstethered to the peer. Patrizia notices a particularly nicelooking one. She undoes the knot, releases it.MAURIZIOYou’re stealing this boat?PATRIZIANot stealing it. Just borrowing it.She removes her heels and steps onto the boat.LATER: On the boat. Noting around it except mist. Mauriziostops rowing as he realizes they are alone.

12.Patrizia moves from her seat and kneels before him- sheunzips his pants and disappears between his legs, mink coatcovering her head.Franco, seeing the boat in the distance, smiles.PATRIZIA (V.O.)Maurizio was sick with bronchitisfor a month after that. He told hisfather he caught it running in therain. It was the first of many lieshe told about us.18INT. VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO, WAITING ROOM- DAYTIGHT on a PAINTING showing a woman. Patrizia stares at it.She is sitting on a leather couch that swallows her frame.A murmur. Her gaze moves over to an obfuscated glass doorconcealing two figures, talking to each other. The glass doorslides open. Maurizio appears next to RODOLFO GUCCI (70s).Melancholic, elegant, like a sad sonnet brought to life.MAURIZIOFather, I would like to introduceyou to Patrizia. Patrizia, this ismy father, Rodolfo.Rodolfo does a very poised baise-main. He’s an expert at it.RODOLFOI see Adele kept you company.Patrizia doesn’t quite understand. Rodolfo points at thepainting on the wall.PATRIZIAOh yes. She’s beautiful. Picasso?Klimt.RODOLFOPATRIZIAHow silly of me.RODOLFOI’ve done far worse.Everyone laughs.PATRIZIAMust be worth a fortune.***

13.RODOLFOArt has no price.19MAURIZIOI made a reservation at the Gallia.*RODOLFOMagnificent choice.*INT. EXCELSIOR GALLIA- DAYPatrizia, Rodolfo and Maurizio sit at a corner table on thebeautiful terrace overlooking the city. Patrizia eats lobsterbisque, Rodolfo delicately dissects a head-on branzino andMaurizio pokes at his mostly uneaten pasta.Rodolfo is wonderful: light-hearted, warm, breezy.*RODOLFOAnd what are your particularinterests, Patrizia?***PATRIZIAI’m a very social person. A peoplepleaser.***RODOLFODo you study?*PATRIZIAI work for my father’s business.RODOLFOWhat sort of business is that?PATRIZIAGround transportation.Rodolfo nods politely and chooses silence over furtherquestioning. Maurizio pinches his leg under the table. He hassweat patches under his arms. He’s a nervous wreck.PATRIZIA (CONT'D)Maurizio said you were an actor.Rodolfo wipes his lips, can’t wait to get into it.RODOLFOPerhaps you caught a rerun of the1938 classic The Ancestor?Patrizia squints, pretending to seek. Shakes her head no.*

14.RODOLFO (CONT'D)No, you’re probably too young.How about 1933’s Tourist Train?**PATRIZIA(humoring him)Tourist Train sounds familiar.RODOLFOYou might have noticed a dashingyoung actor by the name of MaurizioD’Ancora. That would have been me.**PATRIZIAI didn’t know I was sitting with amovie star. Can I get an autograph?Rodolfo swats her compliment away with his hand.RODOLFOThe best thing that came out of myacting career was meetingMaurizio’s mother. She was a realstar. At her funeral, during amoment of silent remembrance,Maurizio saw the priest lightingcandles and started singing happybirthday. He turned the saddestmoment of my life into something,how do you - something sweet.That’s my son. My dear boy.*******The lunch is over and their plates are cleared away.PATRIZIAThanks for the delicious lunch.20EXT/INT. VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO- DAYMaurizio arrives back at the villa, gets out of the car andgoes in. He walks through the endless corridors of hisfather’s villa. His shoes slap against the marble floor. Hepeers into various rooms: they’re all empty.21INT. VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO, MEMORY ROOM- DAYRodolfo is in a silk Gucci robe, watching his wife in asilent film. His cigarette holder emits a trail of smoke. Hemarvels at himself, drowning in nostalgia.*He immediately senses Maurizio entering the room.*MAURIZIOYes father?**

15.RODOLFOAre you trying to send me to anearly grave?***MAURIZIOShe really liked you.Rodolfo kills the projector. He puts out the cigarette in anoverflowing ashtray, his hands bony and nicotine-stained.*RODOLFOHow did you meet her?MAURIZIOAt a party.RODOLFO(disgusted)A party. I hate to tell you this,Maurizio-**MAURIZIOThen don’t. Please.**RODOLFOThere’s women who make theircareers out of trapping young menlike you.****MAURIZIOPatrizia is not like that.**RODOLFOShe is only after the money, don’tyou see? They all are.**MAURIZIOI love her. You can’t change that.RODOLFOLove!? You don’t know anythingabout love.Maurizio heads for the door but his father GRABS his arm.***RODOLFO (CONT'D)I had Franco investigate her andher family. The Reggianis.they’re. they’re truck drivers.****MAURIZIOHer father has a very successfultransportation business. It’s anempire.****

16.RODOLFO(sarcastically)A trucking empire! How many?What?!MAURIZIORODOLFOHow many trucks? Ten, fifty? Whatdo you they transport? Garbage?Silence in the room.*RODOLFO (CONT'D)I gave you life. I gave youeverything. What more do you want?***MAURIZIOWhat I want. is to marry her.**RODOLFOYou can’t just marry some girl.You’re a Gucci. You’re different.***MAURIZIODifferent than you? Yes. Listen toyourself. You’re so bitter youdon’t even realize it. Who careswhat her family name is, or howmany trucks they have? You hidehere in the past and you expect meto hide with you. Not anymore.These are your ghosts. They’re notmine. These are your regrets.**********RODOLFOYou can’t do this to me.I won’t allow it.**MAURIZIOYou can’t stop it.RODOLFOThen I’ll leave you nothing. 17.MAURIZIOI know what she is.**Maurizio takes a small step forward towards his father- butit’s a GIGANTIC one in their relationship. His body tightenslike a coiled wire. and he storms out of the room.22EXT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD- NIGHTMaurizio rings the doorbell of the Reggiani’s modernist home.He looks around, worrying that someone might see him.SILVANA REGGIANI - Patrizia’s mother- opens the door. She’sin a nightgown and cosmetic face mask. The family’s YorkshireTerrier, OSCAR, tucked under her arm. She immediatelyrecognizes Maurizio. Her jaw drops.FERNANDO REGGIANI comes rushing at the door, grumbling andasking who the hell it is at this hour.MAURIZIOCommendatore Reggiani. My name isMaurizio Gucci. I have had adisagreement with my father thathas forced me to leave my home andfamily business. I am stillstudying to be a lawyer, so as ofthis moment I am unemployed. But Iam in love with your daughter and Iwould like to marry her, althoughnow I have nothing to offer her. Ineed a job.******Patrizia appears behind her parents. She RUNS towardsMaurizio, squeezes past them, and throws herself in his arms.23INT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD- NIGHT*The Reggianis and Maurizio walk across a hallway lined withreligious icons. Silvana subtly kisses her finger and touchesthe feet of a small Virgin Mary.***They open the door to an APARTMENT above the family garage.Simply a small bedroom, kitchenette, living area and a TV.**SILVANAPatrizia’s room is down the hall.If you need anything. just ask.As Silvana and Patrizia walk away, Fernando grabs Maurizio’sarm and has a “man-to-man” next to the Virgin Mary.*****

18.FERNANDONow listen Young man. I will giveyou a job. I will open my home toyou. On one condition: No funnybusiness under my roof. Agreed?2425262728Maurizio nods eagerly.*EXT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD- NIGHT*WIDE on the modernist villa and studio apartment above thegarage. A moonlit SHADOW crosses the connecting hallway.**INT. REGGIANI HALLWAY- NIGHT*ANGLE ON: PEDICURED FEET. Tiptoeing across the mahogany.*INT. REGGIANI GARAGE APARTMENT- NIGHT*Patrizia. Slides into Maurizio’s bed and gets on top of him.*INT. REGGIANI HOUSEHOLD, BEDROOM- NIGHT*ON SILVANA: awake in bed listening to the couple go at it.Proud. That’s my girl.**EXT. FERNANDO REGGIANI'S TRUCKING COMPANY- DAYMaurizio is POWER WASHING a truck. The fellow truckers take acigarette break. They offer him one. Light it for him. Heleans against the truck, sweaty and surprisingly at ease.29EXT. FERNANDO REGGIANI'S TRUCKING COMPANY- DAYLunch break. The workers are playing SOCCER under thefreeway’s overpass. The GOAL POSTS two TRUCK TIRES.Maurizio gets down and dirty, dribbles a few players- he’s alot younger and more svelte than them. He passes the ball toa burly foreman, who SCORES. They hug like old friends.SUDDENLY: over the yard’s LOUDSPEAKER, a voice.VOICE OVER LOUDSPEAKERMaurizio Gucci, you’re urgentlyneeded in accounting.We see Patrizia watching through the trailer’s window blinds.30*****INT. OFFICE TRAILER- DAYMaurizio steps into the EMPTY TRAILER. Nobody inside, silentexcept for a ceiling fan. He must be in the wrong one.

19.Suddenly the DOOR LOCKS BEHIND HIM. He turns around.It’s PATRIZIA. She pulls down the BLINDS. Smilesmischievously at Maurizio and gestures him to “come hither”as she spills out on an EMPTY DESK.31EXT. OFFICE TRAILER- LATERWe pull out of the trailer’s windows and show the yard, whereWORKERS are perched on their truck beds, eating sandwiches,drinking coffee and smoking.PRE-LAP: the sound of WEDDING BELLS.32INT. SANTA MARIA DELLA PACE- DAYThe pews are draped in burgundy velvet and decorated withbunches of wild-flowers. Patrizia walks down the aisle.She joins Maurizio at the altar, he kisses her hand. Her gazelands on EMPTY PEWS at the front.No Guccis came.The wedding ceremony begins. She cracks a pained smile atMaurizio but her disappointment is plainly visible.33EXT. SANTA MARIA DELLA PACE- DAYMaurizio and Patrizia, newlyweds, step outside to a crowd ofonlookers clapping and cheering. A couple PAPARAZZI elbowtheir way through and snap photos of them.
