‘THE CINEMATIC ASSEMBLED’‘The Cinematic Assembled’ looks at the fictional worldof the films, collapsing the lines between individualstories to explore the larger story of the MCU. Itbegins with a display of comics books depicting thefirst appearances of Marvel characters, as well as aselection of contemporary comics whose narrativeshave inspired specific films. This first section of the exhibition examines in depth therole of Captain America and the Avengers, alternatedimensions — featuring Ant-Man, Doctor Strange andthe Guardians of the Galaxy, and the significance of theInfinity Stones — and ends with Thor and the ThroneRoom of Asgard. Along the way, the exhibition exploresthe complex personas and relationships that have madethese characters relatable to contemporary audiences.‘DECODING THE UNIVERSE’‘Decoding the Universe’ focuses on Iron Man, oneof the most fascinating characters in the MarvelCinematic Universe. Iron Man is the brainchild of TonyStark, self-professed genius, billionaire, playboy andphilanthropist. Stark first embraced the Iron Mancharacter after he was kidnapped and wounded inAfghanistan, where, to stay alive, he was forced tobuild a suit of armour. Stark’s cutting-edge technologyexposed him to corporate sabotage (Obadiah Stane),rival military contractors (Justin Hammer), decade-oldgrievances (Whiplash), and a clandestine organisationfronted by a criminal mastermind (The Mandarin). This section of the exhibition presents elements fromthese clashes from Iron Man 2008, Iron Man 2 2010and Iron Man 3 2013, including Stark’s racing suit andcar, as well as multiple versions of the Iron Man suit.‘BEHIND THE SCENES’The Marvel Cinematic Universe is far more than thesum of its dynamic action sequences and charismaticactors. A look behind the scenes reveals the rigorouscreative processes undertaken during the pre-productionand post-production phases of filmmaking. Drawingon Marvel’s rich visual history, this space showcasesthe work of designers, artisans and production teams, bringing together beautifully crafted props and costumesalongside previously unseen set pieces from theforthcoming Thor: Ragnarok 2017.
