Robin Brenner is the Reference and Teen Librarian at the BrooklinePublic Library in Brookline, MA. She is the author of the Eisner-nominatedUnderstanding Manga and Anime from Libraries Unlimited, and theeditor-in-chief of No Flying No Tights, the graphic novel review sitewww.nof lyingnotights.comraphic novels have become an engaging alternative for readers seeking different kinds of storytelling, but given the stereotypes that still cling to the medium and the increasing number oftitles available every month, maintaining a collection is a daunting task.GIn collecting graphic novels and comics, remember that variations are includedunder the graphic novel umbrella: boundvolumes of comics, novel-length originalworks, and Japanese manga series are allgraphic novels for a library’s purposes.Collections of previously publishedsequential stories include everythingfrom Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis to thelatest Batman collection. Original longerworks, like Jessica Abel’s La Perdida orCharles Burns’ Black Hole, strengthenany collection and improve diversity.Japanese manga, defined as print comicsfrom Japan, broaden the audience forany graphic novel collection, particularlydrawing in young and female readers. The key is that all of these tell storiesthrough sequential art: a narrative ofimages and words across the page. Anykind of story can and has been told inthis format, from compelling biographiesand memoirs to meticulous historicaldramas to speculative fantasy. Graphicnovels are written with every kind of audience in mind, from a ten-year-old fantasy fan to a forty-year old true-crimejunkie. The challenge becomes figuringout which stories will work for your localcollection, and anticipating what yourpatrons expect next.Always keep in mind the kind of graphicnovel collection you want to build—isthis collection for a public library, schoollibrary, or a special collection? Will it beaimed at kids, teenagers, or adults? Doyou want to start with classics or get thehot new titles and then fill in retrospectively, as buzz for the format builds andyou can get feedback?Where to start?Remember to check what you already have! Most libraries collected graphic novels beforethe format was recognized as a separate type.Whether you reclassify older titles to fitinto your graphic novel collection or simplyhighlight them by pulling them out for adisplay, remember to investigate whatclassic titles you already have. There are how many volumes?Graphic novels are serials, and you will need topurchase multiple volumes to get the completestory. Western comics traditionally tell complete story arcs in one volume, like TV seriesrun stand alone episodes. In Japanese manga, every volume expands on the story in progess. There are far fewer entry points for newreaders. For the series your readers aredesperate to finish, you will need to committo completing the series.Build a seed collection of classics andnewer first volumes to test the waters inyour community. Make sure to include titlesfrom the wide range of what’s available.Award winners and literary volumes shouldmix with popular choices like superheroesto meet readers’ demands. A memoir willappeal to the book club crowd, while thelatest manga thriller will draw in a wholeother audience.Comics for everyone! If you are in a public libraryespecially, you should have collectionsfor each of the standard age ranges:children, teens, and adults. Think aboutwho each title appeals to the most.Separating out graphic novel collectionsamong the age ranges gently reminds usersthat there are comics for all these ageranges, and that not every superhero titleis appropriate for an eight-year-old.Continued.on page 21
