What is Aquaponics? Aquaponics is the marriage ofaquaculture (raising fish) andhydroponics (the soilless growingof plants) that grows fish andplants together in one integratedsystem. The fish waste providesan organic food source for thegrowing plants and the plantsprovide a natural filter for thewater the fish live in. The thirdparticipants are the microbes(nitrifying bacteria) that thrive inthe bio filtration media. They dothe job of converting theammonia from the fish waste firstinto nitrites, then into nitratesthat are food for the plants.

History and Origins Long before the term“aquaponics” wascoined in the 1970sthe Aztec Indiansraised plants on raftson the surface of alake in approximately1,000 A.D. In 1,000 B.C., theChinese began tocultivate catfishdirectly in floodedrice paddies.

In modern times aquaponics emergedfrom the aquaculture industry as fishfarmers were exploring methods ofraising fish while trying to decreasetheir dependence on the land, waterand other resources. In the 1970s research on using plantsas a natural filter began, most notablyby Dr. James Rakocy at the Universityof the Virgin IslandsThe first large scale commercialaquaponics facility, Bioshelters inAmherst, MA, was established in themid-1980s, and it is still in operationtoday. The introduction of the AquaponicsJournal in 1997 by Rebecca Nelson andJohn Pade brought the technology andthe industry together for the first time.Rebecca Nelson also wrote the bookAquaponic Food Production.

Home based aquaponics owes its origin in the early1990s to Tom and Paula Speraneo of S&S Aquafarms inWest Plains, MO. The Speraneo’s diligently refined amedia bed growing technique that was moreappropriate for smaller systems, and wrote a how-tomanual that became a spring board for many homebased systems build through-out the world. In 2005, Travis Hughey wrote the Barrel-ponics guideand made it available for free on his Faith AndSustainable Technologies website. Since then thousandsof barrelponics systems have been built in the U.S.Meanwhile, on the other side of the world in Australiainterest in aquaponics was taking off becauseaquaponics is a way to solve the drought and poor soilconditions that the Australians have to contendwith. Joel Malcom led the movement by starting apopular forum (Backyard Aquaponics), writing a book oncreating backyard aquaponic systems, and creating andselling aquaponic systems designed specifically forhomeowners. Malcom currently operates a retail centercalled Backyard Aquaponics dedicated entirely toaquaponics in Perth, Australia and edits BackyarAquaponics Magazine.Popularization of aquaponics has grown steadily throughthe past decade with the most noteworthy championbeing MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” awardwinner Will Allen of Growing Power, who has integratedaquaponics into his two acre urban farm in Milwaukee.
