Please email your suggestions (together with your reasons) to info@flightschools.net Your suggestions will be most welcome. Each of the books listed has a link to the relevant page on the Amazon web site. Just click on alink! We are certain that using this eGuide to “Best Books on Flying” will save you a LOT OF TIMEand could shorten your study period and costs. Why we deal with AmazonAmazon has become the biggest bookshop in the world. As such it offers the widest selection ofbooks and is most likely to have books in stock. In addition, our own experience is that Amazongoes the extra mile in providing excellent service.Read the manuals BEFORE you start your flying lessonsOne of the most consistent feedbacks we receive from students relates to reading the manualsbefore starting flying lessons. The members of one group are glad that they read the manualsfirst. The others are sorry that they didn’t!You will not understand or remember everything you read by doing such homework. But doing sowill place you at a big advantage. You will find that everything slips into place a lot quicker. This advice applies particularly to students who choose to study abroad. In South Africa, forexample, you will find that you want to enjoy the beaches and the warm sea. You will almostcertainly want to have fun after hours and at weekends. Or spend a weekend or two in greatgame parks viewing elephants, lions and rhinos. Doing such things is so much more possible isyou have done your homework first.About the books chosenMost of the books chosen relate to studying for private and commercial pilots licences – PPLand CPL – fixed-wing as well as helicopters. We have also included shorter sections on studyingfor exams, gliding, parachuting, microlighting, paragliding, paramotoring, meteorology(weather) and even a bit of humour.

The manuals are designed to meet theneeds of those studying for the Private PilotLicence. This volume looks at flying training.ReviewsNot as good as the AFE Jeremy Pratt books, 11January, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Durham, UKI was quite keen on the Thom series till I got the AFE ones! I think myinterest in flying overcame the rather dry style of the Thom publications:this volume and the others. This book is competent, but pedestrian and dull. And to make a bookabout flying dull is quite an achievement! The best book for the PPL, 1 July, 2001Reviewer: A reader from Sevenoaks, Kent, EnglandI have used this book and the AFE version, this book is not nearly ascomplicated as the AFE, if you are learning to fly then I would suggest thisas opposed to any other, as it is full of diagrams and explanations, manyaren't!!!The foremost set of manuals for your PPL, 24 February, 2001Reviewer: Ross Miles (Ross@MilesNI.freeserve.co.uk) from York, England.Whilst studying for my PPL a friend suggested this series of books. It waswell worth the investment, every diagram, every move explained withperfect clarity. Ideal for those who are either taking the PPL or already haveand want it as a stand-by reference. I come back to it time and time again.Great introduction to flying, 5 January, 2001Reviewer: A reader from Worksop, Notts,EnglandIf you are either starting, or thinking of starting to learn to fly, this is a veryuseful book to teach you the basics of flying. It is laid out in logical stepsand is fairly easy to understand. The other books in the series will go intothe steps in more detail, only if you are very serious about taking your PPLTo Order this book go to: https://amzn.to/38aw7F4

The manuals - all JAR/FCL compliant - are designed to meet theneeds of those studying for the Private Pilot Licence. This volume looks atradio navigation instrument flying.Customer ReviewsOver-complicated and unclear, 11January, 2002 Reviewer: A reader fromDurham, UKI have struggled to find a good book on IMC flying, and this is not it either!I found myself doing cartwheels in my head trying to understand Thom'sstuff on ADF tracking, hold entries and so on.Ultimately there's no substitute for getting in a plane and flying, butpersonally I found Richard Collin's book on instrument flying much easier toget a grasp of what I was supposed to be doing. The Thom one is moreanalytical, more of a straight textbook, and the Collins one is Americanoriented.

For me the bottom line is that while Thom may be the only book which deals directly withthe IMC course, it's not particularly well written, and at times makes the whole thing morecomplicated than it actually is.A must for the IMC rating or just improving your navigation, 24 October, 2001Reviewer: A reader from Chester, UKAs usual Trevor Thom has put together a definitive and concise volume for anyonecontemplating doing an IMC or Night rating. The text covers all the relevant aspects ofthese in a clear and logical way. The section on instrument navigation is very good but doesnot delve too deeply in to GPS and RNAV systems. It is based mainly on the requirementsfor the IMC rating but also includes a section on night flying. Overall a must for the IMCrating or just improving your radio navigation skills. To Order this book go to: https://amzn.to/2OLKWpVHuman Factors and Pilot Performance (Air Pilot's Manual 6)Trevor Thom - https://amzn.to/2PtKVr6List Price: 952.95NO IMAGECustomer ReviewsEasy to understand, 14 December, 2001Reviewer: A reader from ukIntended for private, light aircraft pilots, flying clubs and flying schools, this book providesan introduction to all aspects of basic light aircraft control, both practical and theoretical.Designed primarily for student pilots as they progress through the training for theirPrivate Pilot's Licence, it describes a typical light aeroplane, its engine, airframe, systemsand controls, and its handling on the ground and in the air. Basically, with the new European license, you will be able to fly intoEuropean countries and also be trained anywhere in Europe (in theory). This

book tells you the entire course structure to the new Private Pilot's Licensecourse, ranging from the theory tests that need to be passed to the practicalaspects of the course. It also includes the new aspects of the course thathave now come in to effect due to the new European harmonisation. If youwould like a bit of head start before embarking on the pilot training, thisbook will tell you exactly what is required from you, what you will be testedon, and what you will be taught for the pilot's license. I am hoping to starttraining as a private pilot soon, and this book has told me everything I needto know about the course. To Order this book go to: https://amzn.to/38s3ByPLearning to Fly in 21 DaysPhil Stone - https://amzn.to/37puW3ANO IMAGEKindle Price: 8.04List Price: 20.07 Paperback7 used: 6.073 new: 20.07Customer reviewsReviewer: from London, EnglandYou want to fly with a pilot who passed a crash course?Reviewer: A reader from London, UKA rather skinny book, but worth reading for the detail on how to squeeze aPPL into 21 days. Notice that there is no mention of fun or about the fact thatmany British flying clubs regard graduates of such 'quickie courses' assomething of a hazard that need some further training before they are letloose in British skies. Also no mention of Florida hurricanes that could wreckhavoc on a 21 day schedule.Would you want to fly with a pilot (even yourself) who had passed a crashcourse? Reviewer: (rob747@btinternet.com) from London, EnglandIf any of you are planning on embarking on this new way of getting yourPrivate Pilot's License (PPL) - the 3-week intensive course - this book is agreat way of seeing an example of how the course is taught, what problemsyou are bound to face on your way and also the elation of achieving variousgoals along the way. But I must stress though, that this book is not intendedto teach you about the various technical aspects of flying, although it doescontain a few tips on what to do if you decide to book yourself onto a flyingcourse, such as what flying equipment to purchase and navigational tips. Each of the 21 days of the course are described in detail, and the book iswritten almost like a day-by-day diary by the author, up until the final daywhere he passed his final flying exam. As an aspiring private pilot, I havefound this book to be very helpful, and it has given me an idea as to what toexpect when I decide to do the course myself. To Order this book go to: https://amzn.to/37puW3A

This bookcomprehensively covers the subject from the pilot's perspective, and isarranged in two parts. The first part is devoted to basic helicopter theory andpractice, and includes numerous examples of how the different fundamentalsinteract as seen from the cockpit. The section on auto-rotations, in particular,is fully comprehensive. The second part of the book, called the AdvancedHelicopter Pilot's Manual, covers more advanced theory, of interest to thecommercial or military pilot or to helicopter flight instructors. The authoradopts a simple, humorous, although thorough approach, and the bookshould satisfy the technical requirements of any college course on rotor-wingaircraft, and should also be of interest to amateurs and enthusiasts, particularly radio control helicopter pilots.Customer reviewsVery informative and thorough, but great fun to read too! 2August, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from East Sussex, UKIf you already are studying for your Private Pilot Licence or if you are still thinkingabout going for a trial lesson or if you are simply a helicopter fanatic, this book isa great read. Even difficult technical issues are explained very clearly - with manyexcellent line drawings. There is lots of practical advice on the how-to, spicedwith many real-life stories. The theory and regulations are one thing, but inpractice many other issues arise (or don't, as the matter may be). And everythingis written in a fantastically entertaining way. For instance, there is a neat trick forsmooth landings - namely to maintain just a very slight amount of forward speedon touch-down because humans have their eyes in front and can therefore

judge depth better when moving forward, but extra-terrestrials (withdifferently located eyes) are told sort this out for themselves. :-)To Order this book go to: https://amzn.to/2V2cn2ASpecific Airplanes and HelicoptersRobinson R22 : A Pilot's Guide (Pilot's Guide)John Swan - https://amzn.to/38GRHBqList Price: 14.95 Paperback19 Used: 6.988 New: 8.97Book DescriptionExpanding on the information included in the manufacturer's official flightmanual, which is compiled in strictly controlled test conditions, this guidedetails the performance and handling characteristics and limitations of thepopular Robinson R22 helicopter in real-world flight conditions.
