PRESIDENT’S LETTERAugust 2020Dear Friends,We are certainly living through challenging times.Severe restrictions imposed to halt the spread ofCOVID 19 may have slowed the frenetic pace of urbanlife and dented the pandemic, but they have also hadan perilous effect on our performing arts community.Stages and theatres are dark and curtains have beenclosed for months, with no clear directives regarding reopening in sight, causingmuch stress, anxiety and loss of income to individuals and groups throughout theentertainment industry.Respected producer and Foundation Friend Andrew McKinnon has explained:It is a difficult time but even more so for the singers, actors, musicians anddancers who must place on hold the very reason for their existence, which isto bring joy and inspiration to audiences through their live performances. There has been much creativity and resilience in response to the situation withperformers going online and reaching out to audiences in different ways, butnothing can really replace the magical immediacy of live performance.I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to those of you who have been able toprovide extra financial support at this time. Our last Newsletter described how, withyour help, our Foundation stepped forward to seed fund the Actors BenevolentFund’s COVID 19 EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FUND.OUR CONTINUING SUPPORT FOR THE PERFORMING ARTSActors’ Benevolent Fund: The importance of the Emergency Fund and thesignificance of our contribution was publicised in Stage Whispers magazine and byAlan Jones on radio 2GB and Josh Zepps on ABC (see insert in this Newsletter).Griffin Theatre Company: We welcome Fiona (Fee) Hulton who joins ArtisticDirector Declan Greene and the Griffin Theatre Company team as InterimExecutive Director. Although the SBW Stables is closed, vibrant online activitiescontinue and plans for reopening are on track. We also appreciate that we havebeen able to continue with the award during these unusual times our students needencouragement more than ever to pursue their creative ideas and through the financial support ofthis award, engage in project opportunities they have initiated.Winner Melissa Kahraman also expressed her thanks. Her project is a feature film: thestory of a first generation Turkish-Australian woman as she begins to explore and take ownershipof her life, and her role in her family as she begins to question her faith, and her inherent obligationto her Islamic community. The major theme that the film will explore is the idea of displacement inits various forms. Displacement from ones own country, family, community, and self.THE FOUNDATION’S ARCHIVES & SEABORN LIBRARY:We are delighted to welcome assistant archivist and librarian, Susan Mills who is helpingour highly-valued archivist Neil Pollock as he reduces his hours. This Newsletter containsSusan’s discoveries of gems among our Archives as well as details of activities in ourLibrary that is fast becoming a much-needed, affordable teaching and rehearsal venue.AT THE FOUNDATION OFFICEWe were so relieved to be able to welcome home our Administrator Carol Martin recently.Carol is back at her desk having endured lockdown overseas for over two months and afortnight in quarantine after returning to Sydney. She has prepared a list of theatricalactivities, mostly online, as well as surprise re-openings and future productions.Georgie Davis, who has been Carol’s cheerful, good-hearted assistant for many years hasdecided to retire. We thank Georgie, wish her well and hope to see her at future functions. Some of you have already met Danny Smith who now assists in the office. Treasures from the S,B&W Foundation Archives and LibraryTheatre Programmes CollectionAt the heart of the Seaborn, Broughton &Walford Foundation Archives and Libraryis a valuable collection of personal papers,audio-visual material, books, objects, photographs, and memorabilia relating toall aspects of the performing arts.Amongst this collection is a verylarge treasure trove of theatreprogrammes! This important collectioncovers much of Australian performing arts, however the primary focus is on Sydneytheatre. With over 18,000 programmes,it’s a remarkable resource for researchinto Australian theatre. One that certainlyfulfills Dr Seaborn’s vision to preserve andpromote Australian performing arts. The S,B&W Foundation’s TheatreProgramme Collection has beenaccumulating since the establishment ofthe Foundation in 1986, and forms one ofthe most significant theatre programmecollections in Australia.Did you know? The programmes have found theirhome in the S,B&W Foundation archive ina number of ways. Some through a largetransfer in 2006 of programmes formerlycollated by the past Dennis WolanskiLibrary of the Performing Arts at theSydney Opera House, while many arrivedby donation to the collection by manywonderful individuals. The oldest programme in the Seaborn,Broughton & Walford Foundation Archive and Library’s TheatreProgrammes Collection is from 1860!Programmes are an importanthistorical record, providing evidence andcolour to the story of actors, production, stage technology, companies, buildings, venues, and social themes. The opening date was on Tuesday, 29May, in 1860.The programme is for a performance ofVerdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’, at the Prince ofWales Opera House in CastlereaghStreet.

Treasures from the S,B&W Foundation Archives and LibraryTheatre Programmes CollectionA very brief history of programmes.Theatre programmes are thought to have begun with thesmall playbills of London theatres of the 1730s.Australia’s earliest surviving playbill is also its earliestsurviving printed document. This playbill was for aperformance of the play ‘Jane Shore’, held on Saturday,30 July 1796 at the Theatre, Sydney. The only copy waspreserved in the National Library of Australia, and wasadded to the UNESCO Australian Memory of the WorldRegister in 2011.Processing our programmes into the archive.Throughout the years, S,B&W Foundation Archivists andvolunteers have painstakingly individually sorted each ofthe thousands of programmes in the Archive collection. They have been categorised and indexed by venue, company and location. They are now held in archivalstandard environmental conditions for preservation inthe S,B&W archive compactus shelves, available forresearchers to access.Making the collection known Providing public access to this unique collection hasalways been an aim of the Foundation. Some programmes have been scanned and addedto the Facebook group ‘The History of the IndependentTheatre, North Sydney’. This includes Doris Fitton’sIndependent Theatre company’s first performance at theIndependent Theatre —’French Without Tears’ (pictured)- which held its opening performance on Saturday,2 September 1939, just as the Second World War brokeout.Another exciting project just begun is thelisting of programmes held by the S,B&W Foundationonto the AusStage performing arts online database.Making the programmes collection more widelyknown will preserve the valuable history and stories ofour performing arts heritage.

ASSISTING THE ABF BY SPREADING THE WORDOn July 7th our Foundation President Peter Lowry contributed to a discussion on the ABC morningradio programme Focus regarding the desperate position of the performing arts sector due to thecancellation of shows and lockdown of venues in accordance with COVID 19 restrictions. After expressing his admiration and affection for those in the profession, Peter outlined thecircumstances of current difficult situation. Because of the contractual nature of their work, manyhave fallen into the gap between Job Keeper and Job Seeker. As a result, increasing numbers arecoming forward every week to request financial assistance from the Actors Benevolent Fund tohelp meet the unexpected costs that come with the lengthy closure of the industry. Petermentioned that there was even an escalating need for food vouchers. He also explained how our Foundation seed-funded the ABF’s COVID 19 EMERGENCYASSISTANCE FUND to help meet this urgent situation.Presenter Cassie McCullagh was most sympathetic and, after hearing Peter describe the currentplight of those in the performing arts, said she was moved to tears.Positive listener feedback was received from the programme.Peter subsequently contacted broadcaster Alan Jones who generously publicised the ABF duringhis busy final week on 2GB radio. Peter also arranged for ABF President Bruce Spence to be interviewed on Josh Zepps’s ABC Breakfast programme. Following this interview, Bruce emailed:Hello Peter, I did have an excellent interview with Josh Zepps yesterday morning for about ten minutes justbefore the 10.00am news. He was very supportive and we talked most of the time about the ABFand the plight of the industry .Thank you once again for your invaluable assistance.Regards Bruce SpenceA welcome follow-up email was received from ABF Secretary & Event Producer Camilla Rountree:Dear Bruce and Peter, We had a lady call us today to make a donation of 1,000 because she heard Bruce on the radio talking about ABF and the plight of actors.Great result.CamillaCamilla has also confirmed that applicants are currently asking for food vouchers, assistance withrent and household bills, medical and dental bills and even help with car registration. And with noor reduced government benefit, the demand for support will undoubtedly increase. Families andsingle parents where one or both the parents are working in the business are under particularstress. To address this in July, the ABF introduced a special 50 per dependent grant paid in foodvouchers to the families of applicants. In cases of particular hardship, the ABF has, at theCommittee's discretion, raised the assistance level to 1,500. The ABF expects that there will bean increase in demand over the next few weeks with a spike post September. A rent assistanceprogram for this time is also under discussion. The ABF also anticipates that the relief program willhave to continue well into the new year. The Seaborn Broughton & Walford Foundation and the Actors’Benevolent Fund express grateful thanks to their Friends andsupporters who are able to make donations, whether large orsmall, to assist the Actors Benevolent Fund’s valuable work inhelping our performing arts community through thisunprecedented time.
