“He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red andshriveled like an old man’s.” They both had smallheads, not in proportionwith their bodies. Theyhad red skin in color andlong skinny fragile legs. This connects Doodle andthe Ibis because it explainshow weak there bodieswhere in the story, thenwith the weak fragilebodies shows that anyharm would cause easilydeath.

“When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having abrother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.” This quote shows that Doodleis struggling to be in a worldwere no one thought that hewould still be alive. At theage of five years old and notknowing how to walk, he waskind of a disappointment. When the Ibis was in the treeand they found out that hewas not in the rightenvironment it connectsDoodle and the Ibis showingthat they are struggling to fitin with surrounding wherethey can not survive.

“Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a brokenvase of red flowers and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty.” When doodle fell backward ontothe earth, bleeding from themouth, the front of his shirtstained with a brilliant red, thecolor of the scarlet ibis, he neverbefore seemed so fragile. He wasbeing seen for more than hisfragile body. When the Ibis hadfallen out of the tree and died hewas not seen as a dead bird hewas viewed as a bird that tried tosurvive in a environment which itdid not belong.

“At that moment the bird began to flutter, but the wings wereuncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers,it tumbled down bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree andlanding at our feet .” The bird was as uncoordinated asDoodle and it also tumbled downto the grown similar to howDoodle body did at death. Whenthe Ibis died he’d tried to fly andleave from the tree but failed anfell to its death. When Doodleand his brother were in thewoods running from the rainDoodle did not succeed and healso fell to his death and died. This situation shows that bothbelieved they could do things andbelieved in themselves. However, they couldn’t and that’s whydeath came into the story.
