Notes from Mrs. LongFirst, I would like to thank all of youwho have donated supplies so far! Youare very much appreciated and becauseof your generosity, the students are ableto take their learning to the next levelwith several hands on inquiry basedscience experiments J WHAT’S COMING UPTuesday, Sept 10:2 nd Grade Parent Night6-7:30M ary M arek CafeteriaM onday, Sept 23:Student HolidayFriday, Sept 27:M ath Unit Test #1 (graphs, place value, addition, and subtraction 20)7 Habits of Happy KidsHabit #2: BEGIN WITH THE ENDIN MINDWe have spent our morning meeting time this week discussingways to begin with the end in mind. Set a goal Make a plan to achieve your goal Each student is an IMPORTANT part of our classWhat we are learning this week:MATH: Place Value and Odd/EvenStudents will identify place and value of numbers to 999. They willIdentify numbers as odd or even and order greatest to least and leastto greatest. We’ll know we’ve “got it” when we can compose and decomposenumbers in picture, standard, and expanded forms.SCIENCE: Scientific Processes and InquiryStudents will record inquiries in their science journals following thescientific method. We will experiment with “dancing raisins” and“bleeding color markers” this week. We’ll know we’ve “got it” when we can complete an inquiry basedexperiment safely and following the scientific method. This week I wanted to let you know alittle about the “7 habits” you may behearing your child talk about at home. The 7 Habits of Happy Kids is a spin offof the 7 Habits of Highly EffectivePeople by Stephen Covey. Second gradeis a big transition year for your childwith the end goal being preparing themto be successful third graders. Twoteachers, lockers, keeping up with theirthings between two classrooms, selfresponsibility, and managing our ownbehavior are all goals we hope to masterthis year. The 7 habits is a tool I use tohelp put these goals into “kid language”.Each week we will talk about a differenthabit for 5-10 minutes each morning.Once we get through the 7th, we willstart over and will have covered eachhabit 5 times through the end of theyear. The first round is really anintroduction of the habits and the secondround is when the kiddos really start toconnect the habits to their daily routinesat school AND at home.I encourage the kids to lead our 7 habitsdiscussion in the mornings and useevery opportunity I can find to tie ourhabit of the week into our learning. Ihave found that the habits really helpthe kiddos to start thinking about theconsequences of their choices (positiveand negative), as well as help them learnto manage their own behaviors. The endgoal is for them to all be self-sufficient,self-managing, responsible learners bythe time they leave me for 3rd grade! You can also use the 7 habits at home! The book is available on Amazon andthere are several story books to go alongwith each habit that are also available.

SCHOOL/HOMECONNECTIONHow Can I Extend My Child’s Classroom Learning AtHome?HOMEWORK:ASTROS will begin coming home MondayWednesday this week. Encourage your child to usewhat we have learned in class to complete theirhomework. We will go over homework together inclass each day. Pleas encourage your child to dohis/her best to solve the problems on their own andmake any notes of any problems they may run into sowe can address them in class. J STRATEGIESPLACE VALUE AND ODD/EVEN NUMBERSThe students have probably already told you howtired they are of hearing me say, “every paper has ahome”. They will soon be sick of hearing “everynumber has a home”!1. DRAW A PLACE VALUE CHART (Ones, tens, hundreds). Each number really does havea “home” and represents a value depending onits home. Our goal in second grade is toincrease awareness of the VALUE of digitsdepending on their place to allow students toeasily compose and decompose numbers. Forexample, 7 in the ones place 7. 7 in the tensplace 70. 7 in the hundreds place 700. Noplace can have more than 1 digit. Once youget to 10, you trade in for the “house” nextdoor.2. ONES COME IN PAIRS!I teach the students to draw their ones in pairsto make it easier to identify evens and odds.Evens all have a partner. Odds will have an“odd man out”!.SCIENTIFIC INQUIRYScientific inquiry is all about having the students usewhat they already know to make an educated guess(hypothesis) about what the result of their experimentwill be. They will then use critical thinking skills toreflect on the results of the experiment to explain whythe result did or did not match their hypothesis. Talk toyour kids about the experiments from their sciencejournal and prompt them to use their critical thinkingskills to EXPLAIN the experiment results to you.INVESTIGATING AT HOMEThere are several investigations you can do with yourchild at home found on Pinterest, teacherspayteachers, etc. The kids LOVE science experiments! Most can bedone for little to no cost and will work wonders for yourchild’s critical thinking and problem solving skills. Ifyou have some extra time on the weekend, let your childchoose and experiment and let them play teacher andguide you through the scientific process. I love to hearabout investigations they have completed at home andthey definitely love to share with me and their friends inclass! J

Our Week In Pictures“I ‘moustache’ you a question”Students created their own question, polled the class, andused the data to CREATE their own graphs!

SUPER Students! These students filled their clips with stars this week! Students get a star fortheir clip for each day they end on SUPER student on the conduct stick! Oncetheir clip is full, they get their choice of a classroom privilege and their clipand picture go on the wall of fame J Megan MendozaLuke ThomasMorgan Slade
